The
Timeline

One continuous thread from before the first star to the end of the story. Eighteen eras, each a single card on a vertical spine — and each told for the buried story, the throughline the campaigns only gesture at, not the mission recap you already lived. Read it top to bottom: this page reads sixteen eras as resolving the whole Light-and-Darkness Saga into a single argument between a Gardener and a Winnower — and two more carry the Fate Saga from its opening to the last word the story was ever given.

One argument, then a new one

Destiny's timeline only looks like a pile of expansions. Underneath, it is a single quarrel that predates the universe: should existence keep producing new, surprising forms forever, or collapse into one perfect, final, unchanging shape? Every era below is a move in that game. The purple markers are the Light's eras; the teal ones are where the Deep is in the driver's seat.

Purple vs. teal

Each card carries a hand-drawn glyph and a "buried" note — the reveal you don't get from playing the mission, only from the lore books, Grimoire, and item text.

Purple-bordered cards run on the Light / the Sky / the Gardener. Teal cards are turns where the Darkness / the Deep / the Winnower sets the terms.

The art is original

Every era glyph is hand-drawn in this page's own palette — invented mnemonic marks, not reproductions of any in-game symbol or screenshot.

For the philosophy beneath it all, read the hidden cosmology; for who's pulling the strings, the factions and the figures.

The Era Spine

Before the Sky → the End of the Story

Eighteen eras, in order. Read each for the throughline.

01Before time · The Garden

Before the Sky — The Gardener & the Winnower

Before Light and Darkness had names, a Gardener and a Winnower shared a garden and played a game called Possibility. A smaller board, the Flower Game, follows rules identical to Conway's Life, and the entry calls it a seed beside their game. The Gardener sows variety to see what could be; the Winnower reaps and keeps only what wins.

One pattern always wins: the all-consuming Final Shape, with nothing at its center but the will to go on existing. The Gardener, vexed that this erases everything interesting, writes itself into the rules to "reward those who make space for new complexity." The Winnower answers by reaching for the first knife.

BuriedReading: this whole parable is told in Unveiling, narrated by the Winnower itself. Mara calls the unveiled text “dogmatic propaganda.”
02Eons · Across the dark

The Traveler's Long Flight

In-universe, the Traveler is read as the Gardener in physical history: wandering the cosmos, terraforming dead worlds, and uplifting species into golden ages. Ishtar's timeline places an ancient desert people among the first it blessed — who named it "the Gardener." For eons, they prospered.

But the Traveler never spoke to them. That silence left its first children craving a greater purpose, and drew them to the Veil and ultimately to merge into the Witness. From then on the Pyramids of the Black Fleet hunted the Traveler across the stars, and the Traveler fled — always one world ahead of the knife.

BuriedReading: the Traveler is the story's clearest physical sign of the Gardener. The species that became the Witness was the blessed child turned against the giver — the template for every "saved" people that follows.
03~ centuries ago · Sol

The Golden Age

The Traveler arrives in our Solar System and gives humanity its own miracle: tripled lifespans, terraformed planets, the warmind Rasputin, and the Clovis Bray empire that built the Exos and the self-replicating nanotech SIVA. A golden age.

It was built on borrowed time. Humanity never asked why the Traveler had stopped running — never knew the Black Fleet was still inbound. The Golden Age is the same trap every uplifted people falls into: a gift without an explanation, and a debt coming due.

BuriedBray ordered a kill switch added to SIVA; Rasputin later disengaged the self-destructs. Rasputin also ran a secret protocol to assess humanity's “moral structures.” Reading: the Golden Age's hubris is the fuse for the next three eras.
04~ centuries ago · The fall

The Collapse

The Black Fleet finally catches the Traveler at Sol. The Witness's Pyramids fall on the Golden Age and end it almost overnight — the system shattered, civilization reduced to ruins.

The Traveler makes its stand and is nearly killed. In its dying breath it does two things: it goes silent and dormant over what will become the Last City, and it pours out a stream of Ghosts to find the dead and raise them as Lightbearers. Rasputin, facing failure projections under MIDNIGHT EXIGENT, goes dark and survives — a grey decision that haunts later lore.

BuriedReading: the Collapse is the Winnower's pruning hand made literal: the Final Shape's blade testing whether this garden, too, will fall to the knife.
05The Dark Age → City Age

The Dark Age & the Rise of the City

The first resurrected — the Risen — wake with no law and no City. Many become Warlords, immortal tyrants preying on survivors. The Iron Lords, Lord Radegast among them, reject that path, rise to end the Warlords' tyranny, and become the first true Guardians.

Survivors gather beneath the dormant Traveler and raise the Last City, with the Speaker speaking for the dormant Traveler. But the Iron Lords' triumph carries a poison: they rediscover SIVA, infiltrate Bray's Site 6, and wake Rasputin — who turns the nanotech against them and all but ends the order.

BuriedReading: the Speaker may never have been a Guardian — a title passed between mortals tending a dormant god. And Lord Felwinter was secretly an Exo made through Rasputin's SIDDHARTHA GOLEM protocol.
06Destiny 1 · 2014

Destiny 1 — The Guardian Awakens

A Ghost raises you from the dead and the era of player-Guardians begins. You push the Fallen, Hive, Vex, and Cabal back across Old Russia, the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and follow the cryptic Exo Stranger to the Black Garden — a realm adrift in time and space where the Vex of the Sol Divisive, frozen in rapture, surround the Black Heart. You destroy it.

House of Wolves opens the Reef and the Awoken: Mara Sov's long game, Variks (whom they call a betrayer), and Skolas's bid to become the Eliksni "Kell of Kells."

BuriedThe Black Heart may have been a failed Vex copy of the Veil: in Lightfall, Ghost raises that possibility and Osiris agrees the attempt failed.
07The Taken King · 2015

The Taken King & the Hive Wars

Oryx, God-King of the Hive, brings his Dreadnaught to Sol to avenge his son Crota. Aboard it the Guardian learns the Hive's true horror — the Sword Logic: that the strong are cosmically entitled to devour the weak, proof of the Darkness's truth. The Guardian kills Oryx through the rupture, on the Dreadnaught.

The Books of Sorrow open here: Oryx's own myth-history, preserved in calcified fragments, explaining how three Krill siblings — Aurash, Sathona, Xi Ro — bargained with the Worm Gods to become Oryx, Savathûn, and Xivu Arath, and built a religion of death.

BuriedMara Sov let herself be vaporized at Saturn on purpose — “Get yourself taken into the treasury as treasure, and when the owner dies, break back out with his stuff.” Reading: her gambit spans the next decade of lore.
08Rise of Iron · 2016

Rise of Iron — SIVA & the Iron Lords

The Fallen House of Devils' Splicers unearth the buried SIVA in the Plaguelands and infuse themselves with it, following Aksis, Archon Prime, in ascending to godhood. Lord Saladin, who survived the original SIVA catastrophe, calls a new generation to arms.

You become heir to the Iron Lords and destroy the replication chamber and Aksis. The era closes the long wound of the order's near-extinction, and hands the Light's oldest cause to the player.

BuriedReading: SIVA is a perfect dark mirror of the Sword Logic in machine form: a self-replicating drive to consume and reconfigure everything into one optimized pattern — the Final Shape rendered in nanites.
09Destiny 2 → Warmind · 2017–18

Destiny 2 — The Red War to Warmind

Dominus Ghaul cages the Traveler and strips the Light from every Guardian — the franchise's reset. Ghaul, an albino runt cast aside and left for dead, taken in by an old scholar before proving himself in Calus's coliseum, dies trying to seize worthiness the Light can only give. When he falls, the Traveler wakes and a wave of Light washes over the Guardians.

Curse of Osiris exposes the Vex Infinite Forest simulating every possible future; in Warmind, Rasputin awakens and the Worm God Xol attacks his core. The dormant god of the City has finally stirred.

BuriedReading: the Traveler's "awakening" here is the first time it acts of its own will in the modern story — quietly establishing it is a sentient agent that makes choices, the bombshell Witch Queen will detonate.
10Forsaken · 2018

Forsaken & the Dreaming City

Cayde-6 is murdered and Uldren Sov is named his killer — and Riven of a Thousand Voices, the Taken wish-dragon at the heart of the Dreaming City, is the power behind the wish that follows. Uldren wishes a dying Fikrul back to life; Riven grants it and the Scorn rise.

The Dreaming City is caught in a three-week loop; an Awoken note, asudeM, calls it a failsafe to keep Dul Incaru safe and warns that you face an agent of Savathûn. Mara Sov's Oracle Engine, formed from the Techeuns' singularity, is part of the same story. The Drifter and the Nine arrive in the margins.

BuriedReading: Forsaken is the saga's master class in wishes and unintended consequences — the Ahamkara bargain that mirrors, in miniature, the Worm Gods' deal and the Witness's whole offer of salvation.
11Shadowkeep · 2019

Shadowkeep — The Pyramids Return

On the Moon, Eris Morn uncovers a buried Black Pyramid and unleashes Nightmares — Darkness-conjured phantoms of the dead. The Unveiling lore book, the Gardener-and-Winnower parable, was added in Shadowkeep and released over the following weeks.

Inside, your Ghost says "Come to us. Do not be afraid." — a voice later understood to be the Witness. You inspect an unknown artifact and hand it to Eris.

BuriedReading: Unveiling is the same parable from Era 01, now read by the Guardian — and Eris's closing letter warns Guardians against entertaining the Darkness at all.
12Beyond Light · 2020

Beyond Light — Stasis & the Darkness

On Europa, the Eliksni Eramis wields Stasis — the first Darkness power a Guardian can hold — to take revenge on the Traveler for abandoning her people. The forbidden line is crossed: the Light's soldiers now wield the Deep.

The Deep Stone Crypt reveals the true horror of the Bray empire — that Exos are digital copies of human minds, and "Clovis Bray" is a manipulative AI of a dead man's mind. The Exo Stranger is unmasked as Elsie Bray, who has seen a dark future and works to avert it.

BuriedReading: Stasis proves the saga's central wager early: a power is not its source. Darkness in a Guardian's hand need not serve the Final Shape.
12aChosen · Splicer · Lost · 2021

The Beyond Light Seasons: Savathûn's Long Con

Season of the Chosen is where the Cabal story and the Hive story turn out to be the same story. Empress Caiatl comes to the Vanguard offering an alliance against the Hive and asks for fealty with it; Zavala will not bow, and the fight moves to Rites of Proving against her champions, ending in a ritual duel between the Guardian and Caiatl's Chosen with the peace terms riding on it; the Guardian wins and an armistice follows. Behind the argument, her homeworld is already lost. Torobatl falls because the Evocate-General Umun'arath, under Savathûn's influence, performs a dark ritual to summon Xivu Arath; Caiatl kills her with a ceremonial sword, and as Umun'arath dies a portal opens in the sky for Xivu Arath's armies.

Season of the Splicer and Season of the Lost run the other half of the plan. The Vex mind Quria drowns the Last City in an Endless Night, and Mithrax and his House of Light, Eliksni who chose the Traveler, come to the Last City. But the Osiris who has been steering the Vanguard is Savathûn in disguise. In Lost, Mara Sov returns to the Dreaming City and agrees to cut the worm out of the Witch Queen. Savathûn escapes the ritual and hands Osiris back.

BuriedReading: Torobatl and the Endless Night are one operation. Savathûn used Cabal pride to open a door for Xivu Arath and Vex ambition to hide in plain sight, and then she asked her enemy to remove the thing that tied her to Oryx's bargain. The Witch Queen year starts here, a season early.
13The Witch Queen · 2022

The Witch Queen — Savathûn's Truth

Savathûn didn't steal the Light — she had her worm removed, died, and a Ghost named Immaru raised her, as Ghosts raise Guardians. Reading: that detonates the franchise's deepest assumption — the Light is sentient, and it chose her. Worthiness does not precede resurrection.

The Vow of the Disciple raid introduces Rhulk, a Disciple of the Witness, and the Books of Sorrow are re-read: the Witness orchestrated the Worm Gods' bargain, claiming the Krill for itself. And at last the Darkness behind it all is given a name — the Witness.

BuriedReading: "The Light chooses" recontextualizes every Guardian, ever — including you. Maybe none of you were chosen for being worthy. Maybe the Traveler simply gambles, the way the Gardener wagers.
13aRisen · Haunted · Plunder · Seraph · 2022–23

The Witch Queen Seasons: Alliances Against Everything

The year is a run of coalitions, each formed against a god that is not the real problem. Season of the Risen puts Zavala and Caiatl on the same side against Savathûn's Lucent Brood, with Cabal Psions supplying spears capable of dispelling Light. Haunted is Calus returning in his corrupted Leviathan, now a herald of the Witness, reaching through the ship for the Lunar Pyramid. The Nightmares that spill onto the Moon are the cost of that link. Eris, Zavala, Caiatl and Crow sever it. Calus is pushed back, but he has made the connection to the Pyramid he came for.

Plunder is a lighter hand on a heavier ledger: the Drifter, Mithrax and Eido run a pirate crew to keep Eramis from collecting relics of Nezarec. Seraph is the sharpest turn. Xivu Arath, with Eramis behind her, is after Rasputin's Warsat network, and the Vanguard and the Brays race to bring him back. When he wakes he chooses the opposite of command: Rasputin sacrifices himself and destroys the whole Warsat network rather than let his weapons be used. A lore entry, "Moment", records the contingency order he left: it names the protocol AURORA SACRIFICE and closes on a farewell poem to Ana Bray. The Warmind who survived the Collapse by going dark, and once ran a secret protocol to assess humanity's moral structures, ends the era by choosing to be unusable.

BuriedReading: every season of the year ends with a weapon being removed rather than used: the Lucent Brood's Light, the Leviathan's link, the Warsats. The cost is paid in the one currency the Witness cannot copy, an actor choosing to lose.
14Lightfall · 2023

Lightfall — The Veil & the Portal

On Neptune, the hidden city of Neomuna was built around the Veil — the power of consciousness, which Osiris says is linked to the Traveler as a pairing. Calus, now a Disciple, leads the Shadow Legion's hunt for it, while Nezarec's hand surrounds Neomuna. Strand debuts here. Calus dies in the Vault beneath Neomuna, and his last word is “Cemaili.”

Despite everything, the era ends in defeat: the Witness seizes the Traveler, uses the Veil to forge a connection, and tears open a portal into it to enact the Final Shape. The saga's lowest point.

BuriedIt was Savathûn who killed Nezarec during the Collapse, stole the Veil from his Pyramid, and hid it on Neptune.
14aDefiance · Deep · Witch · Wish · 2023–24

The Lightfall Seasons: Buying the Way In

After the Witness has used the Veil to open the Traveler, the year is about getting past the Witness's door, and every season buys a piece of the route from someone who wants something. Defiance gives the Guardian the Awoken as allies: Mara Sov names them her Queensguard and the target is Calus's Shadow Legion. Deep goes under Titan. Sloane's link to the proto-Worm Ahsa lets Ahsa speak through her and tell the Witness's origin: a people who worshipped the Gardener, found the Veil, and decided the Light was chaos to be carved away and made final. They then used its binding power to merge themselves.

Season of the Witch is the price of the next piece. Ikora and Eris agree with the rogue Ghost Immaru that he will resurrect Savathûn, who knows the way after the Witness, on condition that they first deal with her sister Xivu Arath. To do it Eris becomes the Hive God of Vengeance, tithed by Guardian kills, and she cuts Xivu off from her own throne world. Eris is left spent but alive, back in her own body, and Savathûn rises again. Savathûn leaves Immaru with the Vanguard. Wish buys the last piece. Mara conjures Riven's spirit; Riven will grant Savathûn's final wish only if her uncorrupted eggs are found and protected, and the Wall of Wishes opens the path in.

BuriedReading: Ahsa tells the Witness's origin through Sloane, and a Hive god, an Ahamkara and a Worm all appear in the year's road to the Witness.
15The Final Shape · 2024

The Final Shape

Inside the Traveler lies the Pale Heart, a world of twisted memory where Guardians make their last stand against the Witness. Its true goal is finally plain: not conquest, but the end of all change — in its people's words, to be “Eternal… and perfected” and to end the universe's suffering. Reading: the Winnower's victory, literalized.

In the raid Salvation's Edge the goal is to free the Light, and in Excision to unmake the Witness once and for all. The Final Shape is prevented, and Guardians can wield Light and Darkness together as Prismatic.

BuriedReading: the Guardian doesn't win by being stronger — they win the Wager. Given total freedom and power over physics, free beings chose to build a gentle kingdom. The Gardener bet right.
16Echoes · Revenant · Heresy · 2024–25

The Episodes — Echoes, Revenant, Heresy

The Final Shape leaves Echoes — formed largely from memories — and the survivors live in the wreckage. Echoes: rogue Vex and a Golden-Age scientist chasing a perfect future that echoes the Final Shape itself. Revenant: Fikrul's new Scorn crisis, Mithrax's condition deteriorating under Nezarec's curse, and Eramis in possession of the Echo of Riis.

Heresy: the Dreadnaught returns above Saturn, reanimated by an Echo of Oryx. Eris Morn is killed by the Resonant Knife on the Dreadnaught — then wakes in her own throne world, the High Heresy, and binds Oryx's Echo in it as its jailer — until the Guardian shatters the Echo with the reforged Willbreaker: Oryx's second death. Xivu Arath is already dethroned, not ended; Heresy denies her brother's return and leaves the Hive pantheon fractured.

BuriedReading: Heresy answers Era 01 by turning the Sword Logic against itself: Oryx's own memory accepts defeat as proof, while Eris proves a mortal can wield Hive law without surrendering to it. The old law is not erased — it is exposed as a choice. Aiat.
17The Edge of Fate · Kepler · 2025

The Edge of Fate — A New Saga Opens

With the Witness gone and the sky clear, a new saga opens — and its first move is not about Light or Dark, but a third power that was always in the room. The Nine draw the Guardian out to Kepler, where dark matter has been touched by the Nine, and reveal what they are: minds that grew out of dark matter, one bound to each world of Sol, whose awareness expanded as life grew on those worlds (Ishtar's timeline). On Kepler, by the singularity, III of the Nine lies dead, and Maya Sundaresh, the old Ishtar scientist, appears as a Vex Conductor.

Eliksni entries from Kepler speak of “the Giver.” The Monument lore entry Unanswered Ante Shell mentions the Prophecy to “Bind the Nine,” unexplained. The Nine's Emissary is the displaced human Lodi.

BuriedReading: the Nine are a third thing in the story — in their own entries they existed before “the creeping wrinkle of paracausality.” The saga's opening question isn't Light or Dark. It's what it means to bind the Nine.
18Renegades & Monument · Mars & Sol · 2025–26

Renegades — The Weapon of the Nine

One of the dying gods breaks ranks. VI, the mind of the Nine bound to Saturn (“No shackle can halt my divergence”), stands behind a mortal weapon: Dredgen Bael. With VI behind him, Bael and the Cabal officer Lume raise the Barant Imperium, a renegade legion whose leader “brought hell to Mars and wants to do the same on Earth” — armed with Nightfall, a weapon fed by Eclipse energy, an anathema to Lightbearers. Against them the Drifter plays close to Bael, the best way, he says, to protect the crew.

The Guardian boards the Zagan Gloriosus, stops Lume, and stops Nightfall. When the campaign closes, Dredgen Bael “remains on the loose”; the Drifter leaves to hunt Dredgens and deal with VI and the Nine. A later Monument lore entry, Agony of Want, reports Bael “presumed deceased” in the destruction of the Zagan Gloriosus.

BuriedReading: the Nine never truly wanted Bael. He was the mirror — the weapon they spent centuries positioning was you. And when the guns go quiet the story doesn't resolve, it opens a door: Zavala hands the Vanguard to Ikora, who already knew (“I’ve known since Kepler. Three told me. Called me Commander.”), and in a dark forest a voice that is not Lodi's speaks through him — telling the Guardian to take a breather and “get hungry”, and promising a “showdown at the end of time between champions of dark and light.” The voice never names itself. Lodi, coming back to himself, says: “That wasn't a Nine. But it knew you,” and adds, “I don't know what that was.” That is where the told story stops.

The end of the story — for now

The spine is complete. Every era the game ever told now lives above — from before the first star to a dark forest on Earth where a borrowed voice makes the Guardian a promise. The Light-and-Darkness Saga closed at the Episodes; the Fate Saga opened on the Nine and ends here — not on a resolution but on an open door: the Prophecy to “Bind the Nine” still unexplained, the Outer gods still straining to slip Sol's chains, and a voice that promises a showdown at the end of time that no chapter was ever written to deliver.

Current through Renegades & Monument of Triumph · The whole story, ending and all

Out-of-universe — why it stops here. Renegades (December 2025) was the last expansion released. Bungie's own plan for 2026 had an update called Shadow & Order (March 3, 2026), which was delayed and renamed: the Monument of Triumph update (June 9, 2026), originally planned as Shadow and Order, became the game's final live-service content update, with small character beats that, in Bungie's words, leave the story and characters “in interesting places” — the cliffhanger above included. Bungie says it is now incubating its next games. The game itself remains playable, just as the original Destiny still is; only new story stopped. So this codex is, for the first time, complete — it covers the entire told story, end to end.
Where to go next: read the philosophy under all eighteen eras in the hidden cosmology, the races and their true histories in the factions, or the villains and lore-keepers the reveals hinge on in the figures. Back to the lore hub.
