The Vault is a lock. Here is why “Pen left” works.

“Penumbra left, Antumbra right” gets a fireteam through the Vault. But it can leave a strange gap: you know what to call without knowing what the machinery is doing.
The missing piece is the key. The symbol you match tells you which side is the duplicate. The symbol on the opposite side is the unique key that needs to pass through the lock’s top socket.
That makes the familiar callout a compact instruction for turning a physical lock.
Read the relationship between three displays
Each plate’s display gives you a center symbol and two side symbols. The center is that plate’s fixed identity. One side repeats another plate’s center; the remaining side is the local unique key.
You cannot identify that relationship from your display alone. The other readers supply the missing information. Call centers first, listen for a match on your sides, then record the essence your own plate needs.
Here is one example using letters in place of the game’s animal symbols. These are explanatory identifiers, not a new callout system to impose on your team.
| Plate | Left | Center identity | Right | Matching side | Required essence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tree | B | A | X | B matches Stairs’ center, on the left | Penumbra |
| Stairs | Y | B | C | C matches Rocks’ center, on the right | Antumbra |
| Rocks | A | C | Z | A matches Tree’s center, on the left | Penumbra |
At Tree, B is the duplicate because Stairs has B in the center. That leaves X on Tree’s right as the unique key. Stairs finds its duplicate on the right, leaving Y on the left. Rocks finds its duplicate on the left, leaving Z on the right.
Always take left and right from the reader’s view of that display. They are not directions around the room, and the table is an example round: Tree is not permanently Penumbra.
The duplicate names the side. The essence turns the other side up.
Facing the dial, Penumbra rotates counter-clockwise, bringing the original right-side key through the top socket. Antumbra rotates clockwise, bringing the original left-side key through it. The key passes the socket halfway through a 180-degree turn; the dial then continues. The top is a checkpoint in the movement, not the key’s final resting position. So the rule is:
- Duplicate left → unique key right → Penumbra turns the key up.
- Duplicate right → unique key left → Antumbra turns the key up.
The shortcut names the duplicate’s side. The mechanism explains why the opposite side matters. There is no contradiction between “Pen left” and a Penumbra turn moving the right-hand key upward; they describe different parts of the same solution.
This also gives a wrong cleanse a concrete meaning. In this lock model, the wrong turn would bring the duplicate toward the socket instead of the unique key. When a call fails, reconstruct the relationship: which center was announced, where did it appear on your display, and what essence did the runner actually carry? That is more useful than repeating the mnemonic more loudly.
Keep the call short during the fight
The explanation is for learning. The call during combat can stay brief.
“Stairs center is B.” “B is left at Tree. Tree needs Pen.” Once the plate requirements are settled, a runner can call the essence they have, and the team can direct that runner to a matching uncleansed plate. The essence carrier performs the cleanse; do not build a plan around handing the carried essence to a reader.
Readers must agree on what the images are called. Runners need a room and an essence requirement. Defenders need to stop the Might of Riven Knights before they complete a sword plant at a plate. Correct symbol work does not neutralize that separate wipe threat. Vault defender walkthrough

Why this works as a cooperative puzzle
Bungie’s 2018 Last Wish Raid-Along describes the Vault as a lock and an Awoken security measure. Its designers discuss physical puzzle prototypes, repeated iteration, and a version that demanded more communication. They also describe deliberately giving three players the puzzle work and three players primary combat roles. Bungie Raid-Along, Vault discussion, approximately 51:19–1:01:25
That division matters. The encounter can function as a coordinated team system even when one player never studies the dial. A defender doing their job is contributing to the designed solution.
The symbols create another layer of cooperation. Raid lead Joe Blackburn described making them deliberately difficult to name at first, so groups would develop their own vocabulary or learn an existing one. Recognition becomes speech; speech becomes a shared decision. Blackburn interview
My reading is that the Vault communicates its social puzzle more strongly than its physical explanation. A group can preserve the rule that gets a clear while losing the reason behind it. That is an interpretation of the mechanic and its teaching, not a quotation from Bungie or a claim that every successful player must decode the animation.
Let the story deepen the mechanism
The Wall of Wishes gives the raid a related theme: the Techeuns use a constrained visual language to reduce the room Riven has to twist a request. That is established in Helm of the Great Hunt. It does not establish that the Vault is the same interface, reveal who built this exact lock, or provide dictionary meanings for every animal symbol. Helm of the Great Hunt
The connection I draw is about controlling meaning. The fireteam receives ambiguous images, agrees on language, and uses that shared understanding to operate a machine. The story enriches the action without needing an invented translation of each glyph.
Penumbra and antumbra are also real eclipse-shadow terms. They describe different shadow regions; neither word inherently means left, right, clockwise, or counter-clockwise. Astronomy gives the names their context. It does not explain Bungie’s exact choice of rotation. NASA eclipse glossary
For the next read, keep both layers available: the call is “Pen left”; the reason is “the unique key is on the right, and Pen turns it up.” A useful guide lets you act quickly, then gives you enough of the system to explain a mistake and teach someone else.
