Equilibrium is a Shadow-power management dungeon: you keep a stacking buff topped up, spend it on panels and enemies, and chase a Taken "mirror" loop at the end. Learn the buff loop first — it gates every panel and platform in the place.
Unlocking it
You need the Renegades expansion. Access runs through the intro pursuit "The Way Between" from Aunor at the Tharsis Outpost / Cantina on Venus.
Own Renegades; the dungeon sits on the Venus destination (Praxic Temple under Imperium siege).
Progress The Way Between to at least Step 2 — the fireteam leader needs this for the team to launch.
All Dungeon Keys ship in Destiny 2: The Collection.
What wipes most groups
Not raw damage — it's letting your Gathering Shadow buff lapse and missing the Compel mechanic in the Taken mirror at Sere. The buff gates every panel and platform; without it you stall.
The fix: assign one player to keep the buff fed — drive the Shadow pools, pop apprentices on cycle — so panels and Compels are always available. Get to Shadow Master before the Lure timer at Sere and the final loop opens up cleanly.
The Fiction
Why you're here
The Shadow you gather and the ship you board aren't arbitrary — this is a siege of a Praxic temple, fought with the very power the raiders came to steal. Here's the story the dungeon is telling while you solve it.
A Praxic temple under siege
This is a Praxic Order stronghold on Venus, and it is being ransacked. Acolytes of the fallen Dredgen Bael have come for its artifacts, backed by an Imperial Cabal command ship hanging overhead — and the Praxic warlock Aunor Mahal fights beside you to hold the line.
The catch is the enemy's own weapon. The Dredgens wield a corrupt Shadow power, and to reach them you take it up yourself — but borrowed Darkness doesn't stay lent, so it decays in your hands and must be renewed.
Out-Shadow the shadow-users, ride their allies' war machine up into the sky, and push through the siege to the Dredgen orchestrating it.
Core Mechanic
The Gathering Shadow ladder
Equilibrium runs on a stacking Gathering Shadow buff that climbs three tiers across the dungeon. Each tier unlocks more Shadow Power — the resource you spend to break shields, charge panels, and Compel shades. The buff decays on a timer, so the real skill is keeping it fed.
Tier 1 · Harvester
Novice
› Collect Shadow pools
Drive into Shadow pools and pop shielded apprentices to fill the meter. Novice is enough for the first encounter's panels. It lapses fast — keep topping up.
Tier 2 · Harrow
Apprentice
› Spend on shields
Killing the boss's Lackeys raises you to Apprentice. Now Shadow Power can strip Harrow's shields and arm the big blue generators. Two Shadow Power uses ≈ half a shield.
Tier 3 · Dredgen Sere
Master
› Compel the shades
Reach Shadow Master before the Lure of the Dark timer ends. Only at Master can you Compel the Blistered Shadows in the mirror instead of fighting them — that's the clean line through the final loop.
The one habit that carries the dungeon: never let your meter empty. Pools refresh the timer; kills push the tier up. Assign one player to "feed the buff" while others handle panels and the boss. Pools refresh the timer; the tier climbs Novice → Apprentice → Master as you kill into it. See the route map and the encounter breakdown.
Mechanic Checkpoints
What moves the encounter
Brief this before each pull: the progress trigger is what advances the room; the fail/wipe trigger is what must be protected, refreshed, or called immediately.
The Harvester
Progress: keep Gathering Shadow fed through vehicle pools, detonate shielded Apprentices on arrays during their charge animation, then clear the Behemoth wave and board the ship.
Fail/wipe: letting the Shadow buff lapse or killing Apprentices away from arrays stalls the shield drop. Mistimed detonations force another loop under add pressure.
Dredgen Disciple Harrow
Progress: kill Lackeys to reach Shadow Apprentice, shoot fuses, bait Harrow onto hatches, then spend Shadow Power and generators to strip the shield for damage.
Fail/wipe: chasing Harrow out of the hatch/generator setup wastes the phase. Failing the damage check lets him re-shield and resets the fuse cycle.
Dredgen Sere
Progress: reach Shadow Master before Lure of the Dark, Compel all five Blistered Shadows, clear the orbs in both realms, then deactivate pylons and damage Sere.
Fail/wipe: killing a Shadow instead of Compelling it, missing the high fifth Shadow, or failing to shoot Sere's hands during "Face your death!" re-arms the loop and can end the run.
Field Maps
The siege at a glance
You fight up through a Cabal-occupied Praxic Temple on Venus: clear the Harvester ship's defenses, board it up the Imperium Carrier, beat Harrow, then end on Dredgen Sere and his Taken mirror. Here's the whole route; each encounter below carries its own detailed map. These diagrams are schematic — they show order and relationships, not exact geometry.
Full routeVenus · Praxic Temple → Malphas Contemptus
How to read these: the diagrams show order and relationships — what feeds the buff, where to dunk Shadow Power, what kills you — not exact geometry. Chest markers are optional detours, not route gates; plan them before launch so they do not interrupt the Shadow loop.
The Assault
Three encounters, bottom to top
Equilibrium climbs up the temple rather than descending. Each fight is a Shadow loop: feed the buff, spend it on the mechanic, then damage. Same three beats every time — only the boss and the spend change.
1
Encounter · Temple Grounds
The Harvester
"Down the ship's defenses and ride it into the sky."
Lore lens · why it works
The Harvester is Imperial Cabal dropship tech — the same command ship backing the Dredgen raiders. Downing it and riding it up the carrier is you turning the Imperium's own machine against the siege, climbing toward the temple's attackers on the wreck of what they arrived in.
The loop
Clear the opening Imperium wave (Cabal). The objective is to lower the Harvester ship's shields.
Lure a shielded Nameless Apprentice next to an antenna / satellite array and detonate it during its charging (white) animation to power the array. Shadow Novice
Hop the fast combat vehicle and drive through Shadow pools to fill the meter and open the perimeter track.
Repeat the array / pool cycle (around 6 apprentices), defeat the heavy Behemoth wave that spawns, then interact with the ship to advance.
BuffThis is your Gathering Shadow tutorial. The pools are everything — drive a loop that refreshes the buff before it lapses, and you'll never be locked out of an array.
TimingDetonate apprentices on their charge/white animation, not before. Mistiming wastes the kill and the array stays cold.
ChestA secret chest detour sits near this stage with no weekly lockout. It is optional loot, not part of lowering the Harvester's shields.
Map · HarvesterEncounter 1 · Temple Grounds
Track / pools / vehicleArray / chestApprentice
Solo: doable but slower — you're the driver, the detonator, and the add-clear. Pop one apprentice at an array, then take a buff-refresh lap before the next. Don't let the meter die mid-lap or you'll re-do an array.
2
Boss · Imperium Carrier
Dredgen Disciple Harrow
"A teleporting Dredgen with two sabers — punish, don't chase."
Lore lens · why it works
Harrow is a Dredgen wrapped in the same corrupt Shadow his order raids the temple to hoard. That shroud is why raw fire slides off him — you have to out-Shadow a Dredgen, wielding the stolen power well enough to strip his protection before you can land the punish.
The loop
Drop into Harrow's arena (a fuse on the floor opens it). Clear Cabal until the side doors open into branching halls of Lackeys.
Kill Lackeys to push the buff to Shadow Apprentice — that unlocks the panel / Shadow Power interactions.
Shoot the blue fuses on the walls to drop hatches, then bait Harrow onto a hatch to knock his shield down a third.
Use Shadow Power on him (two uses ≈ half a shield) and bait him into the big blue generators to extend the damage window.
Repeat the shield-strip cycle, then burn his health. Fail to finish him in the final room and he re-shields — reset the fuse/hatch mechanic and go again.
SabersHarrow is a dual-saber Dredgen who teleports aggressively and splits the team with explosive lunges. Keep spacing, don't tunnel a chase, and watch your back line.
RestoreThis boss has a shield restore on failed phase — if the damage check fails he heals/re-shields. Don't dry-fire your Heavy; line up the shield-strip then commit.
ChestA second secret chest detour is tucked into this stretch. Grab it between mechanics; it is not part of Harrow's shield-strip loop.
Solo: the tough part is being your own bait and your own damage. Strip the shield with Shadow Power and a hatch, then swap to Heavy fast — Harrow's teleports make sustained solo DPS finicky. Healing on demand matters more than raw burst here.
3
Final Boss · Malphas Contemptus
Dredgen Sere
"Build to Master, walk the mirror, then melt him."
Lore lens · why it works
The Dredgen Sere fuses Arc and Taken energy, the raw material of a fledgling throne world of his own. Compelling his shades and breaking his cast mid-motion is you severing the ritual that sustains him — refusing to let a would-be god finish building the pocket of reality that would make him untouchable.
The loop — the dungeon's whole language, at once
Approaching Sere starts a Lure of the Dark timer (~45s). In that window, build to Shadow Master by collecting pools and killing Nameless Apprentices / Centurions.
Sere marks a player — pink "Face your death!" — and fires lightning from his hands. Shoot his hands to stun him and break the cast.
Kill 5 Nameless Apprentices; each death strips immunity from one Taken orb in the arena. Breaking orbs buys time on the Lure.
When Lure of the Dark fires, the team is pulled into the Taken mirror dimension. With Shadow Master you Compel the 5 Blistered Shadows (stand near, interact) instead of killing them — each Compel frees an orb in the real arena.
The 5th shade spawns up high; reach it via Taken platforms raised by hitting battery panels with Shadow Power. Clear the center pillar's blights to return to the real arena.
With all orbs down in both realms, DPS Sere. He summons lightning from pylons / coils — deactivate them by hitting panels with Shadow Power, then keep damaging. Repeat the restore loop until he falls; grab the final chest.
CompelIf you kill a Blistered Shadow instead of Compelling it, the fight punishes you — forced extra DPS phases and live lightning coils. Reach Master before the Lure so Compel is available.
HandsSere's "Face your death!" lightning is a soft enrage on a marked player. Shoot his hands to stun and cancel it — don't just run.
RestoreThis is a restore-loop boss: realms reset and orbs re-arm if you stall. Keep the buff at Master and keep panels charged so the loop never resets on you.
Map · Dredgen Sere ArenaEncounter 3 · Mirror Loop
Shadow Power panelsOrbs / shades / mirrorPylons / fail state
Solo: this is the hard wall for solo / solo-flawless. You alone must hit Master before the Lure, Compel all five shades (reaching the high one), and survive the lightning. Prioritize a build that keeps the buff and your health up over one that maximizes burst. Expect this fight to be the run-ender.
The backbone to drill:build to Master → Compel, don't kill → clear orbs in both realms → DPS → repeat. Killing a shade or stalling the loop re-arms the orbs and adds phases, so keep the buff at Master and the panels charged.
Loadouts
Meta loadouts
Equilibrium rewards role discipline: someone feeds the buff, someone strips shields, everyone survives the lightning. Build around one boss-DPS option + reliable add-clear + a survivable subclass. The smartest pick is what you can use cleanly under pressure through the boss's short windows.
Boss DPS
For Harrow & Sere windows
Still Hunt Exotic
Golden-Gun shots chunk a boss bar — elite with Hunter's Celestial Nighthawk.
Heavy LFR / Rocket
A Bait-and-Switch rocket or a strong Linear Fusion is the safe, high sustained DPS through short windows.
Heirloom Exotic
The dungeon's own crossbow (Energy/Special) — overcharged bolts are strong against Unstoppable and add real single-target. It competes with Still Hunt for the Special slot, freeing the Heavy slot for the LFR/rocket.
Whisper of the Worm Exotic
Heavy precision sniper for safe ranged damage when the boss teleports.
Add Clear
Lackeys, apprentices, buff feed
Graviton Lance / Sunshot Exotic
Chain-explosion primaries delete Lackey and apprentice packs fast — great for keeping the buff fed.
Riskrunner Exotic
Free Arc chain-clear; effortless solo room control through the carrier halls.
Witherhoard Exotic
Passive area damage to soften waves while you drive pools or bait the boss.
A reliable Special
A fast Special (shotgun / glaive / wave-frame) handles shielded apprentices at the arrays cleanly.
Survivability
Through the lightning & mirror
On-demand healing
Restoration, devour, or woven mail keep you upright through Sere's marked-player lightning.
Tractor Cannon Exotic
Debuff the boss before a damage window for a team-wide multiplier.
Mobility / recovery exotics
Anything that softens the vehicle stage and the mirror's platforming keeps flawless attempts alive.
Warlock
Well of Radiance / Prismatic
A Well anchors both boss damage windows; Prismatic gives flexible healing and ad-clear for feeding the buff. Safest team anchor.
Titan
Prismatic / Thundercrash
Thundercrash is big burst on Harrow and Sere; Prismatic adds healing and barricade safety against the saber lunges.
Hunter
Prismatic + Golden Gun
Golden Gun + Celestial Nighthawk for single-shot nukes; invis aspects help survive the mirror and reposition for Compels.
Loadout note: Equilibrium's bottleneck is buff discipline, not raw damage, so favor weapons you can fire cleanly through the boss's short windows over chart-toppers — what you already own beats a marginal DPS upgrade you fumble under pressure.
Run It Clean
Habits that carry the run
Equilibrium rewards discipline over speed tech. A handful of habits — feed the buff, Compel instead of kill, hit Master before the Lure — turn the whole dungeon from chaotic to routine.
1
Feed the buff first
Every stall traces back to a lapsed Gathering Shadow. Assign one player to keep pools and apprentice kills flowing so panels and Compels are always available. This single habit beats any route trick.
2
Compel, don't kill
At Sere, Compelling the Blistered Shadows is the clean line; killing them forces punishing extra phases. Reach Master before the Lure fires or you can't Compel at all.
3
Shoot the hands at Sere
Sere's "Face your death!" lightning is a soft enrage on a marked player. Shoot his hands to stun him and cancel the cast — don't just run from it.
4
Keep the panels charged
Battery panels raise the Taken platforms and deactivate Sere's lightning pylons. Spend Shadow Power on them on cycle so the loop never stalls and re-arms the orbs on you.
5
Run The Way Between separately
The Heirloom catalyst comes through The Way Between quest. Treat it as a dedicated run rather than mixing it with a first clear — read the live objective and work it step by step.
The one habit that beats every route trick: never let your Gathering Shadow meter empty. Pools refresh the timer; kills push the tier. Keep it fed and every panel, platform, and Compel is there when you need it.
Rewards
What you're farming for
Featured rewards: Two dungeons are featured each week. Featured: Standard and Master drop Tier 5 weapons and armor; the Director challenge and hidden chests drop Tier 5 on a weekly lockout. Not featured: Standard drops Tier 3 weapons and armor; Master still drops Tier 5.
The chase: Heirloom
Heirloom is the dungeon's exotic — an Exotic Crossbow (Solar, Energy slot, Special ammo), Destiny 2's first crossbow, that fires high-powered explosive bolts. Aim down sights to overcharge (Big Game Hunter) the next bolt for more damage and blast radius, and it's strong against Unstoppable Champions.
Source: drops from the final encounter (Dredgen Sere) — a guaranteed first clear during the Contest weekend, then a random drop afterward with improved odds from specific triumphs. The catalyst ties to The Way Between quest.
Armor & weapons
The armor set is the Sage Protector Suit (all three classes). Its set bonuses lean into sword play — energy on sword hits, plus more sword damage and lunge.
