How to distrust raid guides
Raid pages rot in five predictable places. Before you copy a strategy, check the claims that age fastest: which raids are even launchable, what the loot does now, which weapons the DPS lists name, whether a cheese still works, and whether the guide quietly assumes a full six-stack you do not have.
Vault Drift
Five entries here can't be launched today. On 2026-09-21 Bungie said it is working to bring vaulted raids back, with no dates yet — check the Director before planning a legacy run.
Loot Refresh
Update 9.7.0 moved legacy raids into the tiered economy. "Exclusive" labels from old articles can be wrong. Trust the live reward preview.
DPS Lists
Weapon picks expire faster than mechanics. Bring one boss-damage job, one add-clear engine, one survival loop — swap the names, keep the jobs.
Exploit Cheese
Riven-style skips, damage glitches, and timer cheats can vanish in a hotfix. Learn the legit clear first; treat every shortcut as disposable — the mechanics are what carry over.
Six-Stack Bias
Many guides assume a full, coordinated team. If you are LFG or short-handed, prioritize raids with clear role labels and forgiving recovery.
Start classic
Vault of Glass and Deep Stone Crypt teach raid language with clean, reusable roles.
Teach the team
Root of Nightmares is the gentlest mechanics raid — just teach full-team roles, not two carries.
Callout reps
Vow of the Disciple and Last Wish drill shared-name discipline under pressure.
Bring everything
Salvation's Edge and The Desert Perpetual are advanced; learn the basics first.
All raids at a glance
Use this as a pre-run scout. Current raids are ordered by the beginner-friendly learning order — Vault of Glass, Deep Stone Crypt, and Root of Nightmares first; Salvation's Edge and The Desert Perpetual last. The five legacy entries below are grouped separately because they are vaulted raids and raid lairs.
Deep Stone Crypt
Root of Nightmares
King's Fall
Crota's End
Garden of Salvation
Vow of the Disciple
Last Wish
Salvation's Edge
The Desert Perpetual
Leviathan
Eater of Worlds
Spire of Stars
Scourge of the Past
Crown of Sorrow
Which raid should I learn first?
Pick by what you actually want out of the night. Every raid name links to its full deep-dive guide.
| I want to... | Run | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run my first raid ever | Vault of Glass, Deep Stone Crypt | Classic raid grammar (plates, oracles, relics) and clean role buffs with forgiving recovery. |
| Learn callouts the gentle way | Root of Nightmares, Deep Stone Crypt | The easiest mechanics to teach a full team without symbol overload — just resist the "two carries" trap. |
| Practice symbols & coordination | Vow of the Disciple, Last Wish | Dense symbol languages force real callout hygiene: pick names first, call position before description. |
| Take on an endgame capstone | Salvation's Edge, The Desert Perpetual | The hardest current raids. Learn the basics elsewhere first; Desert Perpetual also splits Normal vs Epic. |
| Chase a specific exotic | Vault (Vex Mythoclast), DSC (Eyes of Tomorrow), Root (Conditional Finality), King's Fall (Touch of Malice), Crota's End (Necrochasm), Garden (Divinity), Vow (Collective Obligation), Last Wish (One Thousand Voices), Salvation's Edge (Euphony) | Each headline exotic lives in one raid (The Desert Perpetual has its own as well). Leviathan, Eater of Worlds, and Spire of Stars have no raid exotic; Crown of Sorrow's was Tarrabah, now on the Monument to Lost Lights. |
| Run raid history (legacy) | Leviathan, Eater, Spire, Scourge, Crown | Retrospectives only — these are vaulted raids and raid lairs and cannot be launched unless Bungie reprises them. |
Motifs you'll see again
Raids keep remixing the same handful of ideas. Learn the pattern once and most encounters become "this is a symbol-match plus buff-swap," not a wall of new rules. The motifs page is the field manual for that vocabulary — symbols, plates, relics, buffs, dunks, split spaces, timers, and DPS gates — with examples from across the raid and dungeon rosters.
Five verbs cover most of it: Read (identify hidden info), Runner (carry something under pressure), Dunk (deposit it), Cleanse (clear a bad state or unlock a target), and Swap (trade roles, buffs, or positions before a timer wipes you).
The 2026 reward reality
Monument of Triumph changed the value math for old raids. The encounter mechanics did not all become new, but the reward model did.
Legacy raids joined the tiered economy
Bungie's Update 9.7.0 moved legacy raids and dungeons into the tiered / featured reward economy. Two raids are featured each week. Featured: Standard encounters and challenges drop Deepsight weapons or Tier 5 armor, hidden chests drop Tier 5 armor on a weekly lockout, and Master adds Adept weapons from challenges. Not featured: Standard gives a chance at Deepsight weapons and Tier 3 armor; Master and challenges still give Deepsight weapons and Tier 5 armor. Feats raise the reward grade (Grade 0: Tier 3; 1: Tier 3+4; 2: Tier 4+5; 3: two Tier 5; 4: Tier 4 + two Tier 5; 5: three Tier 5; Cutthroat Combatants +4, Challenges +3, Shocktroopers +2, Token Limit and Phase Limit +1). Standard mode earns the weekly tiered reward without Feats.
Adversarial rule: never farm an old raid from an old loot article alone. Check the Director, the in-game reward preview, and a current loot table first.
Mechanics age better than weapons
The core raid verbs are stable: symbols, plates, relics, buffs, dunks, splits, timers, DPS gates. Exact DPS picks and god rolls are not. Bring archetype jobs, not a frozen loadout.
Default loadout: one boss-damage plan, one add-clear engine, one survival tool. Swap the names season by season; keep the three jobs filled.
