If you stopped playing when "Nightfall: The Ordeal" was the weekly grind, the launch node you remember is gone. The Return of the Director rework folded high-end strikes into Ops categories, and the weekly ritual that plays like an old Grandmaster Nightfall is the Grandmaster Vanguard Alert — Bungie's own words call them "the Grandmaster Nightfalls of old." This hub translates the old vocabulary, decodes the new grade-and-tier reward ladder, and lists the routes worth learning first.
Nothing was deleted — it was renamed and reorganized. Update 9.7.0 deprecated the legacy Vanguard Ops and Nightfall launch nodes and the standalone Portal tab; strike-like activities now live under Ops categories on the Director / Destinations screen, and the weekly high-end ritual is the Grandmaster Vanguard Alert. Learn the new words first — most stale guides fail on vocabulary alone.
| Old player memory | Current language | What it means now |
|---|---|---|
| Nightfall: The Ordeal | Grandmaster Vanguard Alert | The weekly high-end ritual that plays like the old Grandmaster Nightfalls. |
| Vanguard Ops playlist | Fireteam Ops / Vanguard Ops categories | The modern Director access layer for strike-like activities. |
| The Portal tab | Ops categories in the Director | The standalone Portal tab was deprecated; Portal-style activity screens still exist inside the Director. |
| Adept Nightfall farm | Tier 5 GM Alert weapon farm | Rewards are framed around Tier 5 weapons and the weekly alert reward structure. |
| Anti-Champion Artifact mod | Champion frame coverage | Stun is intrinsic to weapon archetypes; the Artifact only hands out damage mods now. |
Difficulties run Normal, Advanced, Expert, Master, Grandmaster, Ultimate (Pinnacle Ops lists Advanced to Ultimate). Difficulty sets the reward tier: Normal 1, Advanced 2, Expert 3, Master 4, Grandmaster and Ultimate 5. Matchmaking runs Expert to Grandmaster and needs Power 300; Ultimate is not matchmade. Grandmaster starts with seven revive tokens, Ultimate five, Arena Ops none. The Director shows the time limit and reward forecast for your setup.
Per Update 9.5.0.1, completing the Grandmaster Alert with Grade B or higher awards the weekly weapon at Tier 5. You do not need a perfect S-grade run to earn the chase — you need a clean clear.
The first weekly GM Alert completion drops that weapon pre-masterworked with its unique origin trait. Later drops can still roll it, at a lower chance.
GM Alerts also pour out Fireteam Ops engrams scaled to your grade, plus the relevant Portal loot pool. Higher grade, more engrams.
Adversarial rule: don't treat this like an old Adept-only cipher loop. The evergreen concept is Tier 5 weekly loot — and exact weapon names are weekly snapshots. The Director shows this week's reward.
A Grandmaster Alert punishes the things a normal strike forgives. Run this six-point check on the launch screen before you load in — most wipes trace back to a skipped line here.
Matchmade Expert to Grandmaster requires Power 300 to enter (9.7.0). GM still scales you well below the enemies, so play like you're under-levelled.
Stun is intrinsic to weapon frames now — no Artifact mod to slot. Bring frames that cover the Barrier / Overload / Unstoppable types the activity lists. Radiant & Volatile are damage bonuses, not stuns.
Match your damage to the weekly surge, respect the threat element pounding your shields, and read the banes / player stakes. Find the one modifier most likely to wipe a casual team and plan for it.
Slot armor resist mods for the threat element and concussive/sniper resist where the route has long lanes. In GM, chip damage is what actually kills you — stack the mitigation.
Special and Heavy are scarce in GM. Bring a Primary that carries, agree on who picks up bricks, and pair finisher/scavenger economy with your boss-DPS plan so you're not dry on the damage phase.
Fireteam & Pinnacle Ops Grandmaster start with seven shared revive tokens (Ultimate starts with five; Arena Ops uses none). Treat them as a team bank — don't overextend for a hero rez. Running out wipes the run, not just you.
You already have the loadouts — they live in the class guides. A GM Alert just asks each player to hold a job: room control, safe revive, champion lock, boss burst. Route to the build that fits the job, then check the surge before locking elements.
| Class | GM-ready picks | Job it fills |
|---|---|---|
| Warlock | Prismatic Getaway loop · Void Devour · Stasis turret control | Self-sustain room control and a safe anchor; Devour keeps you topped through add waves. |
| Titan | Prismatic Consecration · Strand Banner of War · Thundercrash DPS swap | Frontline control and team survivability, with a burst Super to graft onto the boss phase. |
| Hunter | Void Gyrfalcon / Omnioculus invis · Nighthawk Golden Gun DPS · Prismatic Combination Blow (melee-safe routes only) | Safe revives and clutch resets via invis; Nighthawk is the single-shot boss nuke. |
Update 9.7.0 expanded bane combinations from 15 to 21, brought back older banes, added Medusa, and added Focused Fire to Player Stakes. Every GM page should read modifiers the same way: enemy pressure → weekly modifiers → the one thing most likely to wipe you → one build swap to answer it.
Modifier "tags" attached to specific combatants — extra resistances, on-death effects, or buffs. 21 combinations now rotate; read which enemies carry them before you push.
The high-risk modifier layer. Focused Fire (added in 9.7.0) is the newest entry — heightened damage pressure that rewards tighter cover discipline.
Looking at affected enemies builds Stasis slow stacks until you freeze. It breaks long "stare lanes" — shorten sightlines, peek-and-cover, and don't hard-scope a frozen-you into a wipe.
Radar suppression and amped melee/precision damage punish over-peeking. Hold angles, communicate spawns by voice, and clear corners before you commit.
Surge boosts one element's outgoing damage — match your DPS to it. Threat amps one element of incoming damage — slot the matching resist and respect those enemies.
Scoring modifiers and any timer reward speed without recklessness. Don't trade a wipe for a few seconds — a clean clear at Grade B still pays the Tier 5 weapon.
The Grandmaster Alert activity rotates weekly, so the roster is source-discovered — every route here is a recurring, currently-playable activity confirmed against Bungie's weekly posts, never invented from memory. The seven cards below are the best teaching routes to start with; the full 18-route roster follows. The reward changes weekly; the route is evergreen.
A recent official GM Alert. Lucent Hive pressure, ritual-gated progress, and a boss room that rewards patience over greed. Good for learning how GM punishes over-extension.
Open route Phase 1Trains, mine hazards, and arena layering before a high-burst boss. A clean teaching route for movement under pressure and tight boss-phase positioning.
Open route Phase 1The flagship route guide for this set: a classic Cabal strike re-taught in modern GM language, ending in Bracus Zahn's lava-floor arena. Start here to see the full template.
Open route Phase 2Open-field Fallen pressure into a cloaking boss. Teaches sightline control in the open and how to hold DPS for a boss that keeps disappearing.
Open route Phase 2Tight Hive corridors into Obak-Hul, Imprisoned. Boss-room control with hard add density — the classic "small room, big damage" GM lesson.
Open route Phase 2High-lethality Lucent Hive rooms and a Lightbearer boss with a relic-cleanse mechanic. The route that most punishes sloppy positioning and bad cover.
Open route Phase 2Battleground add density and objective phases under Shadow Legion Cabal pressure. Teaches plate/objective discipline when the room never stops spawning.
Open routeRoster source-discovered from Bungie's weekly posts — never invented from memory. The weekly Grandmaster Alert spotlights one activity at a time; every route here is evergreen, but its champions, modifiers, and weapon reward are set by the live node and shown on the launch screen.
