For a Sunless Cell run, do this
- If it is the weekly Grandmaster Vanguard Alert: launch that node and make sure the forecast shows the weekly reward target. The current rule for the GM Alert is Grade B or higher for the weekly Tier 5 weapon.
- If you are setting up a custom Fireteam Ops practice run: use the Portal forecast. The weekly GM weapon rule may not apply to a non-weekly custom launch.
- Turn on champion coverage before difficulty: read the live champion icons, then bring frame-intrinsic counters. Do not trust an old route card over the launch screen.
- Use a surge only if your real DPS matches it and the forecast still pays. A comfortable boon is not worth dropping below the reward target.
- Avoid No HUD, Medusa, ammo starvation, revive pressure, and hard timers for the first Sunless Cell clear. The dark Obak-Hul room already punishes visibility, ammo panic, and bad revives.
The simple rule
Stop adding modifiers once the reward forecast says the run gives what you came for. Extra score past the target does not make a messy clear safer; it just gives the strike more ways to punish you.
For Sunless Cell specifically, the dangerous part is not only boss health. It is low visibility, Cursed Thrall, champion timing, and revives in a cramped room. Do not voluntarily add modifiers that make those four things worse on your first pass.
Pick the run you are actually doing
There is no universal perfect stack. The right modifiers for a carry clear, a Tier 5 farm, and a content challenge are different. Use these as launch-screen presets, then let the reward forecast tell you when to stop.
Make it survivable
Goal: clear the activity and learn spawns without turning the boss room into a coin flip.
- Difficulty: weekly GM Alert if farming, otherwise the highest tier the team can clear cleanly.
- Add: only enough challenge to hit the reward target.
- Avoid: No HUD, hard timer stakes, revive-limit stakes, Famine/Hunger style ammo pressure, and Medusa in dark rooms.
Forecast says pay
Goal: earn the weekly GM Alert weapon without making the clear less reliable than it needs to be.
- Use: the weekly Grandmaster Vanguard Alert node when it is the active farm.
- Target: Grade B or higher for the GM Alert weekly weapon rule.
- Stop: once the launch forecast shows the target reward. Do not chase style points.
Forecast before ego
Goal: use Master or another custom difficulty only if the forecast still reaches the reward tier you care about.
- Add first: manageable challenge modifiers and threats the team can resist.
- Add last: player stakes that remove information, ammo, or revive safety.
- If short: go up a difficulty instead of stacking every hostile modifier in the menu.
Build the modifier stack in this order
Bungie's Portal screen lets you tune difficulty and modifiers, then shows the reward forecast. Treat it like a budget: every hostile modifier buys reward score at the cost of consistency, and every boon buys comfort at the cost of score when the UI says so.
Set the activity and difficulty
Weekly GM Alert for the weekly GM weapon farm. Fireteam Ops custom launch for practice or non-weekly routing. If the forecast cannot reach the reward you want without ugly modifiers, raise the base difficulty first.
Read the reward forecast
Check the grade, reward tier, and any weekly weapon callout before touching modifiers. The forecast is the truth source for whether your setup pays enough to justify the pain.
Cover champions and shields
Champion counters are build requirements, not optional difficulty. Bring the frame coverage the launch screen asks for, then cover shield elements or Match Game only if the selected modifier demands it.
Add easy-to-control pressure
Prefer modifiers your fireteam can answer with loadouts: a threat you can resist, a faction-unit modifier you can call out, or a bane pattern you already know how to play around.
Use boons intentionally
Surges are excellent when they match your real boss damage. Do not add a boon blindly if it drops the forecast under the target grade or pushes you into needing worse negative modifiers.
Use player stakes last
No HUD, No Starting Ammo, Brawn, Extinction, Pressure Cooked, and similar stakes can be worth score, but they change the run's failure mode. Add them only after safer modifiers cannot reach the target.
Good pressure, bad pressure
| Modifier type | Pick when | Skip when |
|---|---|---|
| Surge / boon | It matches the weapons you were already going to use and the forecast still hits the reward target. | It costs enough score that you need ugly player stakes to compensate. |
| Threat | The team can slot matching resist mods and identify the enemies dealing that element. | The strike's hardest room is already dominated by that incoming damage type. |
| Banes | The bane is visible, callable, and answerable with cover or focus fire. | It attacks your main room habit, such as Medusa in dark/long-sightline spaces. |
| Match Game | All shield elements are covered without wrecking champion coverage. | Your team has to choose between shields and champion stuns. |
| Ammo pressure | The team has ammo economy baked in and the strike has safe primary-clear stretches. | The boss room requires sustained champion control or emergency add clear. |
| No HUD / No Radar | The team knows spawns, calls by voice, and is not learning the route. | The strike relies on radar pings, darkness, flankers, or Cursed Thrall warnings. |
| Hard timer | You are farming with a practiced team and already clear under time. | Anyone is learning, testing builds, or checking route notes mid-run. |
Sunless Cell modifier read
The Sunless Cell is a bad place to learn blind. Its boss room compresses the whole fireteam into a dark arena with Thrall pressure, Obak-Hul charges, and champion timing. That makes some modifiers much more expensive than their score value looks.
Best first picks
Matching surge if it fits your DPS, live threat resisted on chest mods, and manageable challenge modifiers that do not remove information or ammo. The fireteam should still see spawns, hear callouts, and kill champions on schedule.
Worst first picks
No HUD, Medusa, Famine/Hunger style ammo pressure, Extinction, Pressure Cooked, and any timer stake if this is a first clear. These make the dark cell's existing failure mode worse.
Build response
Bring one reliable add-control super or exotic loop, one burst-damage plan for Obak-Hul, and full champion frame coverage from the launch screen. The route page handles positioning; this page handles the launch knobs.
Team callout
Before launching, say the stack out loud: champions, threat, surge, worst bane, player stake, reward forecast. If nobody can explain why a modifier is on, turn it off and check the forecast again.
Read this before you fly in
Reward
Forecast shows the grade/tier you came for. For weekly GM Alert weapon farms, aim for Grade B+.
Champions
Every live champion icon has a frame counter assigned to a player.
Threat
Incoming element has matching resist mods and a callout for the enemies that use it.
Surge
Boss DPS actually matches the surge, or the boon is removed.
Bane
The worst bane is named and the team knows whether to break line of sight, focus, or kite.
Stake
Any player stake has a reason beyond "more score." No hidden gotchas.
Ammo
Heavy/special economy exists before ammo-pressure modifiers go on.
