Read this first
Ghosts of the Deep is a Lucent-Hive symbol dungeon: nearly every wall in it is built around one verb — read three runes under Deepsight, then deposit light at the matching plates. The fights are long endurance loops, so the thing that wipes groups is rarely damage; it's a botched symbol read or a death deep into a prep cycle that you now have to redo.
Access & the one rule
Every dungeon is owned through the relevant expansion or its Dungeon Key (all Keys now live in Destiny 2: The Collection). Launch it from the Titan node in the Director.
The rule that makes the whole dungeon click: you cannot deposit light without first reading the symbols. Get Deepsight, memorize the three lit runes, then go collect a Vestige of Light and dunk it at the matching plate.
Names to use
The boss names are Ecthar, the Shield of Savathûn and Šimmumah ur-Nokru — not the older mis-spellings floating around.
The Fiction
Why you're here
The runes and rituals below aren't arbitrary — you are interrupting a resurrection at the bottom of the sea, before a dead god learns to breathe again. Here's the story the dungeon is telling while you solve it.
A drowned tomb on Titan
Beneath Titan's methane sea lies the flooded New Pacific Arcology, and on its seabed the corpse of Oryx, the Taken King — drifted down from Saturn's rings. The severed Lucent Hive, cut off from their queen Savathûn, have crowned a new priestess, Šimmumah ur-Nokru, and she is dredging the dead god's memory to resurrect the Taken King.
Your Ghost turns the Hive's own Darkness-attunement into Deepsight, letting you read truth beneath Hive glamour. But the tomb was built for beings that don't breathe — so oxygen matters, because you are a living thing swimming through a grave.
Read the true runes, out-decode the priestess reciting a god back into being, and sever the ritual before it ever finishes its verse.
Core Mechanic
The Deepsight symbol ritual
Every encounter runs the same three-step loop. Get the buff that lets you see, find the light, and put the light where the symbols told you. Botch any step and the dunk simply won't take — memorize this rhythm and the dungeon stops being confusing.
Step 01 · Reveal
Deepsight
› Read the three runes
Find the illusion and interact to grant the team ~20s of Deepsight. Now look at the walls: a row of Hive runes appears with three lit up. Memorize those three before the buff fades.
Step 02 · Harvest
Vestige
› Kill a Lightbearer
Hunt down a Lucent-Hive Lightbearer (Knight, Wizard, or Acolyte) and crush its Ghost after it falls. That drops the Vestige of Light buff you carry to a plate. No crush, no light.
Step 03 · Deposit
Imbue
› Dunk at the match
Carry the Vestige to the statue/plate marked with one of your three lit runes and deposit. Fill all three matching plates to break a shield or open a damage window. Wrong plate = wasted light.
Why teams stall: the read and the deposit are separated by combat — you grab Deepsight, fight through adds and water to find a Lightbearer, then have to still remember which three runes were lit. Give the symbols quick nicknames out loud the instant you see them. The lit set also re-rolls each damage phase in the Šimmumah fight, so you re-read every cycle. (See the route map and the per-encounter maps.)
Mechanic Checkpoints
What moves the encounter
Brief this before each pull: the progress trigger is what advances the room; the fail/wipe trigger is what must be protected, cleansed, or called immediately.
The Hive Ritual
Progress: use Deepsight to read the lit runes, kill the Lightbearer squad, crush the Ghost for a Vestige, and dunk at the matching statue until all plates are filled.
Fail/wipe: slow rune reads or wrong deposits force extra cycles. The room rarely hard-wipes by mechanic, but deaths while carrying Vestige erase tempo fast.
Ecthar
Progress: spawn Deepsight, read three runes, dive for the matching Lightbearer Vestiges, dunk all three statues, kill the Wellkeeper, break Ecthar's shield, then DPS.
Fail/wipe: drowning, wrong rune deposits, or a late shield break waste the damage setup. If the team enters DPS without stripping the Void shield, the window is lost.
The Long Swim
Progress: move from air pocket to air pocket and follow the open route down to Oryx's tomb.
Fail/wipe: running out of oxygen is the mechanic. A dead player in the swim usually means a long recovery or restart, especially solo.
Simmumah ur-Nokru
Progress: read the three body-part orbs, kill Vorlog inside revealed circles, harvest Vestiges from side Lightbearers, imbue the matching body parts, then damage from Oryx's corpse.
Fail/wipe: killing Vorlog outside the circle does nothing, and a death late in the prep loop forces the read and dunk cycle again. The lit set rerolls every phase, so stale calls kill progress.
Field Maps
The dive at a glance
The dungeon is a descent into Titan's drowned Arcology: an opening ritual, a shield-knight arena over a flooded well, a long swim through the depths, and a final fight on the bones of Oryx. Here's the route top to bottom; each encounter below carries its own detailed map.
Two real boss fights bracket a long swim, with an opening ritual to teach you the loop. Follow the guiding light between areas — and remember that the deeper you are, the more a death costs in re-prep time.
1
Opening · Arcology Surface
The Hive Ritual
"Learn the loop before it can kill you for forgetting it."
Lore lens · why it works
This is the restoration rite itself — the Lucent Hive's ceremony to call Oryx back. Every read, imbue and deposit is you forcing the ritual off its rhythm, interrupting the priestess mid-verse so the chant that would rebuild a god never reaches its final word.
The loop
Drop in and clear to the ritual space. A Soulfire Binder Ogre guards the way — kill it to open the path.
Find the illusion and interact for Deepsight. Read the lit Hive runes on the walls and call them out.
Follow the glowing trail to a Lucent-Hive squad, kill the Lightbearer, and crush its Ghost for a Vestige of Light.
A Veilweaver Wizard guards the deposit — kill it, then dunk the light at the statue marked with a matching rune.
Repeat the cycle until all four plates are imbued. The way down opens.
TempoThis room is the tutorial for the whole dungeon. Lock in your symbol callouts and your read-collect-dunk rhythm here, where mistakes are cheap.
TimerDeepsight lasts only about 20 seconds. Read fast, then go fight — don't waste the window standing still.
SoloSolo, this is the room to drill the loop calmly — you do every step yourself with no one to call runes for you, so nickname the three symbols out loud and lock the rhythm here before the real fights punish a slip.
MemoriesDarkness memory collectibles are scattered through the dungeon. Finding them all feeds a triumph that boosts The Navigator's drop odds, so sweep them up on your way down.
Ecthar, Shield of Savathûn, hides behind a Deepsight shield that only yields to one who "knows the true name." Charging Piercing Light and striking with it is you speaking that true name back at him — proving your Deepsight sees through his ward before the knight himself can fall.
The loop
Start the fight (clear the praying Acolytes / kill the guardians of the well). Adds and Blistered Knights flood in.
Kill the Knights to spawn a Keeper-of-the-Deep Ogre; killing it spawns the illusion. Interact for Deepsight and read the three lit runes on the side walls.
Dive into the water chambers, kill the Lightbearers inside, crush their Ghosts, and surface with Vestiges of Light.
Deposit each Vestige at the statue plate matching a lit rune. Filling all three opens the damage window.
Kill the Wellkeeper Knight to drop a green Piercing Light pool; stand in it to gain the Piercing Light buff, then break Ecthar's shield (Arbalest one-shots it while you hold the buff) and DPS.
ShieldEcthar's Void shield ignores normal fire. Kill the Wellkeeper Knight, stand in the green Piercing Light pool it drops to gain the buff, and then break the shield — Arbalest one-shots it while you hold Piercing Light. No pool buff, no shield damage.
WaterThe Lightbearers live in flooded side rooms. Mind your air and don't get cornered underwater — drowning and a Lucent ambush together end runs fast.
SoloSolo, you do every job yourself: read, dive, harvest, dunk, then break-and-burst. Woven Mail / restoration and an add-clear primary keep the long loop survivable when no one's covering you.

The Long Swim
"The water is the boss here."
Lore lens · why it works
The Long Swim is the flooded gut of the Arcology — a drowned tomb over a god's corpse, no place made for beings that breathe. The oxygen meter is the lore made mechanical: you are a living intruder in a sunken crypt, and the sea itself is the hazard the dead never had to fear.
The loop
Drop into the flooded ruins and swim downward through the drowned Arcology toward the final arena.
Watch your oxygen — surface at air pockets to refill before pushing through long submerged stretches.
Follow the open route; there's combat, but the threat is the environment, not the enemies.
DrownRun out of air underwater and you take rapid damage and die. Plan each leg around the next pocket of breathable space; don't gamble a long swim on a sliver of oxygen.
RouteIt feels mazey the first time but the path is fairly linear — keep diving toward the open water and the next opening. Don't chase side rooms unless you're hunting memory collectibles.
SoloSolo there's no one to revive you mid-swim, so never start a long submerged leg on low oxygen — surface, refill, and push only when you're sure you can reach the next pocket. Slow and alive beats a confident drown.
PaceThis is a breather between two long fights. Rebuild ability energy and Heavy, settle on your symbol callouts, and arrive at Šimmumah fully kitted.

Final Boss · Oryx's Tomb
Šimmumah ur-Nokru
"Everything you've learned — on the bones of a king."
Lore lens · why it works
Šimmumah ur-Nokru is a memory-worm scholar reciting Oryx back into existence over his corpse. The full read-imbue-and-strike loop here is you out-decoding her — resolving the true runes faster than she can weave the Taken King's memory whole, so the resurrection dies with its priestess.
The loop — everything at once
Approach the illusion for Deepsight. Look up: three glowing orbs hover over parts of Oryx's corpse. Note their locations, then start the fight.
An immortal Knight, Vorlog, spawns — Šimmumah keeps resurrecting him. Kill him while standing in a revealed circle to expose runes.
Hunt down Lightbearers / Adherents in the side caverns, crush Ghosts for Vestiges of Light, and read which body part each lit rune wants.
Deposit each Vestige at the matching part of Oryx's body. Once all three are in, the ritual circles become green Piercing Light pools.
Stand in a Piercing Light pool to strip Šimmumah's immunity shield, then DPS her as she teleports around the arena. Burst hard before the buff/window ends.
The lit set re-rolls every phase, so re-read with Deepsight each cycle. Repeat until she falls; loot the final chest.
ResetThis is a long prep loop with heavy add pressure. A death late in a cycle stings — you redo the read and imbue. Survivability over greed: don't push DPS you can't safely get.
VorlogVorlog can't be permanently killed until the mechanic says so. Drop him inside a revealed circle to make it count; killing him anywhere else does nothing.
AddsLucent-Hive and ambient adds never stop. Bring strong, safe add-clear and a healing/woven-mail subclass so you can read symbols without dying mid-look.
SoloSolo, you run the entire loop alone — read, kill Vorlog in the circle, harvest, imbue every body part, then damage — with no revives. Lean hard on invis or Woven Mail, take a safe DPS option, and accept extra phases; a death this deep is a brutal reset.
ExoticThe Navigator (Strand trace rifle) drops here on a low RNG chance after a clear. Solo, Master, and collectible triumphs raise the odds, so stack them when you sit down to farm it.

Loadouts
Meta loadouts
This dungeon is an endurance test, not a DPS check — so the priority is staying alive through long loops while you read symbols, with enough burst to close each damage window. Build around one survivable subclass + safe add-clear + a reliable boss-damage option. Anti-barrier shield-stripping is uniquely handy for Ecthar.
Boss DPS
For Ecthar & Šimmumah windows
Arbalest Exotic
Linear Fusion that one-shots Ecthar's shield while you hold Piercing Light from the pool — the fast way to strip it, borderline mandatory, and solid sustained damage.
Heavy LFR / rocket Legendary
Bait-and-Switch rockets or a Linear Fusion for the short damage windows. Bring what you have leveled.
Still Hunt + Celestial Exotic
Hunters: Golden Gun mode chunks both bosses in a single look. Pairs with Nighthawk.
Whisper / Sleeper Exotic
Heavy precision from range — safe damage when you can't crowd a boss.
Add Clear
Lucent Hive & ambient swarm
Graviton Lance / Sunshot Exotic
Chain-explosion primaries that delete Hive packs while you read symbols.
Osteo Striga / Riskrunner Exotic
Poison & chain-lightning — effortless, safe room clear, great solo.
Witherhoard Exotic
Passive area damage you can drop and forget while you carry light.
The Navigator Exotic
Once you own it: a Strand trace rifle that grants Woven Mail to you and allies — a support pick that doubles as ad-clear.
Survivability
The actual win condition
Healing / Woven Mail
Restoration, Well, or Strand Woven Mail keeps you upright through the long read-and-dunk loops.
Invisibility tools
Hunter invis (and Stylish Executioner) lets you reposition, revive, and read symbols safely.
Tractor / debuff Exotic
A debuff before each short damage window squeezes more out of limited DPS time.
Warlock
Well of Radiance / Prismatic
A Well under a damage window covers both healing and a buff. Prismatic gives flexible survivability for the long loops.
Titan
Prismatic / Strand
Strand for self-sustaining Woven Mail and suspend ad-control; Prismatic mixes healing and burst to taste.
Hunter
Prismatic + Invisibility
Invis trivializes the symbol reads and revives; pair with Golden Gun + Celestial for single-shot boss burst.
The one sticky pick: the standout is Arbalest for Ecthar's shield — fired while you stand in the Piercing Light pool. Everything else is flexible, so play what you're comfortable with and prioritize staying alive through the long loops.
Speedrun
Speed notes, not gospel
Fast runs here are about flawless symbol execution and not dying deep into a loop — not exploits.
1
Nail the read
The single biggest time sink is a blown symbol read forcing another Deepsight cycle. Call the three lit runes out loud with nicknames the instant you see them, every phase.
2
Carry Arbalest
For Ecthar, Arbalest one-shots the shield while you hold Piercing Light from the pool — turning the strip from fiddly to instant. This is the closest thing to a required pick in the dungeon.
3
Respect the swim
The traversal ends more runs than enemies. Map the air pockets and never start a long submerged leg on low oxygen. Slow-and-alive beats a confident drown.
4
Don't over-push DPS
Šimmumah is a long prep loop; a death late in a cycle costs you the whole read-and-imbue. Take the safe damage you can survive and accept an extra phase over a wipe.
5
Navigator catalyst is its own route
The catalyst path uses dead-Ghost piles, Vestige deposits, and hidden boss spawns. Do it after the team agrees to a catalyst run; otherwise those detours can derail a normal clear.
Rewards
What you're farming for
Featured rewards: Two dungeons are featured each week. Featured: Standard and Master drop Tier 5 weapons and armor; the Director challenge and hidden chests drop Tier 5 on a weekly lockout. Not featured: Standard drops Tier 3 weapons and armor; Master still drops Tier 5. The loot pool itself is below.
The chase: The Navigator
The Navigator is the exotic — a Strand trace rifle built as a support weapon. Its perk grants Woven Mail to you and the ally you shoot and does more damage while you have it; its catalyst (Gordian Knot) lets a special reload spawn a Grapple Tangle for free Strand mobility. It drops from the Šimmumah ur-Nokru encounter on a low RNG chance after a clear; solo, Master, and collectible triumphs raise the odds, so stack them when you farm.
Encounter loot
Released in Season of the Deep (2023), the dungeon's legendary pool includes New Pacific Epitaph (wave-frame Grenade Launcher), No Survivors (SMG), Cold Comfort (Rocket Launcher), and Greasy Luck (Glaive), plus the Taken King armor set with its own set bonuses.
