Read this first

Warlord's Ruin is a compact survival dungeon: the whole castle is a stacking debuff timer. What wipes groups here is not boss damage — it's letting Biting Cold tick to 10 while you're greedy.

Unlocking it

All dungeons are gated only by expansion / Dungeon-Key ownership — and every Dungeon Key now ships in Destiny 2: The Collection. With access, launch it from the EDZ map.

  1. Open the Director, select the EDZ, and launch Warlord's Ruin.
  2. No quest gate to enter; the Buried Bloodline exotic and its catalyst are separate secret chases (see Loot).

The one rule: the cold

Across the dungeon you carry Biting Cold, a debuff that stacks toward a kill. At 10 stacks you're frozen and shatter — an instant, team-threatening wipe.

Cleanse it at braziers / lit torches (and standards in the Ogre fight). Your real job every encounter is the same: cleanse on a rhythm, clear adds, and burst the boss inside its short window. Build for survival and burst, not a long grind.

The Fiction

Why you're here

The braziers you light and the cold you fight below aren't arbitrary — a wish-born curse grips this castle, and you climbed here to keep a promise. Here's the story the dungeon is telling while you solve it.

A Dark Age castle, still cruel

In the misty peaks of the EDZ stands a Dark Age castle where a warlord's cruelty outlived him — now a Scorn-and-Taken haunt bound under an Ahamkara's curse. You climb it to fulfill a fallen ally's last wish, guided by Naeem's plea, and lay the vengeful spirit Hefnd to rest.

The cold is wish-magic. A wish-born Biting Cold grips the ruin, and kindling fire at the braziers is the only thing keeping a Guardian from freezing solid where they stand.

Kindle the fire, push through mourning itself, and outrun the vengeance-wish to free the spirit and keep Naeem's promise.

Core Mechanic

The Biting Cold loop

Biting Cold is the spine of the whole dungeon. It works the same three ways everywhere — read your stacks, cleanse before the timer beats you, and never DPS at a count you can't survive. Memorize this; it carries you from the climb to Hefnd's last floor.

The debuff

Stack

› Watch the counter
Biting Cold climbs over time anywhere the blizzard is active. It ramps to 10 stacks; at 10 you freeze and shatter dead. The on-screen icon is your real health bar.
The reset

Cleanse

› Stand at fire
Step into a lit brazier / torch (or a standard in the Locus fight) and your stacks bleed back to zero. Cleanse before a damage phase, not during it — you can't afford to leave fire mid-DPS.
The rhythm

Rotate

› Cleanse, kill, cleanse
Treat every fight as a cycle: cleanse → do the mechanic / damage → cleanse again. In the boss rooms you light braziers across the floor first so a clean station is always near where you'll fight.
Reading the room: the cold only matters where the blizzard is active — the climb, the Locus arena, and Hefnd's floors. Between fights you can usually breathe. The exact tick rate and second counts are approximate, but the cleanse-on-a-rhythm loop is what carries you. (See the route & encounter maps.)
Mechanic Checkpoints

What moves the encounter

Brief this before each pull: the progress trigger is what advances the room; the fail/wipe trigger is what must be cleansed, captured, or called immediately.

Rathil

Progress: when players are jailed, break the Blighted Eyes to escape, then cleanse/capture Taken totems during Imminent Wish to create a longer damage window.

Fail/wipe: failing to break out of cages kills the trapped players, and missed totem captures shorten or lose the phase. Biting Cold at ten stacks is lethal.

Locus of Wailing Grief

Progress: destroy eyes, kill Broken Knights, capture their totems before Imminent Wish ends, then carry charges to braziers to open damage.

Fail/wipe: Biting Cold freezing at ten stacks, missed totems, or bad brazier routes erase the setup. Warmth and capture timing matter more than raw add clear.

Hefnd's Vengeance

Progress: repeat the Broken Knight totem capture loop on each floor, manage Hex/Vengeance handoffs, and chase the boss upward through short damage windows.

Fail/wipe: holding Hex too long, missing totem captures, or losing Biting Cold control kills the phase. The arena climb turns late deaths into long resets.

Field Maps

The ascent at a glance

Warlord's Ruin runs upward — a vertical climb through a Tormented castle in the EDZ peaks. Here's the whole route bottom-to-top; each encounter below carries its own detailed map next to the walkthrough.

The Ascent

Three fights, base to summit

Unlike most dungeons, you climb up a cursed castle. Between bosses are short traversal stretches — the undercroft sewers and the rampart climb — where the Biting Cold blizzard can still tick, so don't dawdle far from fire.

Climb + Boss · Prison & Ascent

Rathil, First Broken Knight

"Escape the cells, climb the keep, and break the knight's wards."
Lore lens · why it works

Rathil, First Broken Knight of Fikrul is a Scorn baron whose Taken corruption cages you in blighted wards. Lighting the cleansing totems is you burning off that curse-blight long enough to act — the wish-cursed castle only lets you strike once you've pushed its corruption back with fire.

The loop
  1. Fight up through the prison and castle exterior. The Biting Cold blizzard turns on here — note the lit braziers as you go.
  2. At the Rathil arena, after a short time he activates Imminent Wish and teleports your team into hanging cages. Shoot the three Blighted Eyes on your cage to escape — you have ~10 seconds or you die.
  3. Out of the cage, find the Taken totems and stand near one for ~8s to cleanse it. This strips Rathil's immunity and starts the Imminent Wish timer.
  4. Cleanse as many totems as you can — each one adds time to the upcoming damage phase.
  5. When the timer ends you gain Naeem's Wish Empowerment. Dump damage on Rathil until the window closes; repeat until he falls.
CageThe cage is the #1 first-timer death. The instant you're teleported, turn and break all three Blighted Eyes — don't shoot Rathil, don't panic-jump.
ColdBiting Cold ticks the whole climb. Touch a brazier before you commit to the boss so you enter the cage cycle near zero stacks.
RolesCleanse more totems for a longer DPS window — greedy two-phasing starts here. Solo, prioritize escaping the cage and cleansing one or two totems safely over chasing all of them.
PuzzleAfter Rathil you reach a mandatory prison-cell cog puzzle: rotate the six dials to match the skeleton tally marks, shoot the lock, then leave the cells and continue the main route. The first hidden chest is a separate detour after the escape.

The Locus of Wailing Grief

"A Taken Ogre, and a blizzard that never stops counting."
Lore lens · why it works

The Locus of Wailing Grief is the curse's grief made manifest — the sorrow at the castle's heart given a Taken Ogre's shape and an endless mourning blizzard. Pushing through it, fire in hand against the counting cold, is you walking through mourning itself to reach the source of the wish.

The loop
  1. The blizzard runs the entire fight — Biting Cold stacks toward 10, then freezes and shatters you. Keep an eye on the counter from the first second.
  2. Cleanse by standing near the standards (banner poles) / lit torches around the edge of the arena. Make this reflexive.
  3. Destroy the Blighted/Acolyte Eyes to summon the Scorn Broken Knights (Malaris and Vrysiks), then kill the Knights to spawn the Taken capture totems. Cleanse/capture as many totems as you can before the Imminent Wish timer ends — when it does, Solar (Burning Desire) charges are distributed at the rally banner, one per captured totem. Carry a charge to each of the four braziers around the boss to light them.
  4. Lighting all four braziers opens the damage phase. Cleanse to near-zero, then burst the Locus.
  5. If the window ends, reset: cleanse, re-run the Eyes → Broken Knight → totem chain for fresh charges, relight, repeat until it dies.
10 = wipeAt 10 Biting Cold you freeze and shatter — a near-instant death that can cascade through the team. Never let DPS greed push you past a count you can cleanse out of.
ChargesSolar charges aren't dropped by ambient adds or by Blighted Knights — they come from the Eyes → Scorn Broken Knights → totem-capture chain and are handed out at the rally banner when Imminent Wish ends (more totems captured = more charges = longer DPS). Track which braziers are lit so you don't waste a charge.
RolesSplit the four braziers; have one player babysit cleanse timing and call "cold!" Solo: cleanse often, light one brazier per safe trip, accept a slower kill. Restoration / Devour keeps you alive between trips.

Final Boss · Hefnd's Cairn

Hefnd's Vengeance, Blighted Chimera

"It has stalked you the whole climb. Now it runs the floors."
Lore lens · why it works

Hefnd's Vengeance, Blighted Chimera is a Taken Chimera holding a slain Ahamkara's soul, powered by the vengeance-wish that cursed the ruin. Outrunning its wish-fueled cold as it flees up the floors is you chasing down the wish to end it — freeing the trapped spirit and finally keeping Naeem's last request.

The loop — everything you've learned, stacked vertically
  1. The arena is multiple floors connected vertically; Biting Cold runs throughout. Light the braziers on each floor so a cleanse is always reachable.
  2. Run the brazier / cleanse mechanic per floor to make the boss vulnerable — keep your stacks low while you do it.
  3. When the Imminent Wish timer starts, the boss applies Hex of Vengeful Corruption / Vengeance to the team — manage it and don't ignore the countdown.
  4. On the damage window, burst the boss hard. When the phase ends, Hefnd teleports to another floor.
  5. Chase it up and repeat the mechanic on the new floor — there are up to three parts to cycle per damage phase.
  6. Whittle it down across the floors until it dies. Buried Bloodline can drop as a reward directly from the final boss (Hefnd's Vengeance) at a low rate.
Cold + chaseThe killer here is doing two timers at once — Biting Cold and the boss phase. Light braziers before a window so you can cleanse on the move while chasing floors.
VengeanceThe Hex / Vengeance debuff applies during the wish countdown — manage it and don't ignore the countdown while you chase floors.
DamageBurst beats sustained: you damage in short floor windows, not one long phase. Stack a burst Super + heavy and a debuff so each window counts. Solo is slow but very doable — patience over greed.
ExoticBuried Bloodline (exotic Void sidearm) only drops here, at a low rate. The separate catalyst chain runs through secret rooms and a hidden boss — see Loot.

Loadouts

Meta loadouts

This dungeon rewards survivability + burst over raw sustained DPS — you fight in short windows while a debuff counts down. Build around one burst DPS option + reliable add-clear + a subclass that heals itself. Self-sustain matters more here than in most dungeons.

Boss DPS

For short damage windows
Still Hunt Exotic
With Hunter's Celestial Nighthawk, the Golden Gun shot chunks a boss bar in one window.
Heavy GL · Bait-and-Switch rocket
A wave-frame / Bait-and-Switch heavy delivers huge burst inside a single phase.
Linear Fusion (Cataclysmic / Taipan)
Reliable precision burst from range while you stay near a brazier.
Whisper of the Worm Exotic
Heavy precision sniper — strong per-window damage if you can land crits.

Add Clear

Knights, Scorn, ambient
Sunshot / Graviton Lance Exotic
Chain-explosion primaries that clear Scorn packs and the Blighted Knights fast.
Indebted Kindness
The dungeon's own rocket-sidearm — farmable here and excellent in-slot add-clear.
Witherhoard Exotic
Area denial and passive chip damage you can leave on the boss between cleanses.
Buried Bloodline Exotic
The chase reward itself: Void sidearm that leeches health on hit — feeds your survival loop.

Survivability

Beat the cold timer
Tractor Cannon Exotic
Big debuff before a window — turns a short phase into real damage.
Healing / Devour tools
Restoration, Devour, or woven mail keep you up while you sprint between fire.
Mobility / class-ability exotics
Anything that speeds your trips to braziers shortens your exposure to Biting Cold.
Warlock
Well of Radiance / Void Devour

A Well anchors a brazier with healing + a damage buff; Void Devour gives constant self-heal for the cold loop. Prismatic flexes both.

Titan
Prismatic / Banner of War

Banner of War or Restoration keeps you alive in the blizzard; Thundercrash is a strong burst Super for a single window.

Hunter
Prismatic + Golden Gun

Golden Gun + Celestial Nighthawk nukes a window; invis and Gambler's Dodge cover trips between fire and the cage escape.

Loadout note: The exact burst-DPS leader matters less here than the archetype: bring a burst option you're comfortable with, and favor self-healing specifically — the gap between the meta pick and what you already own barely moves a fight you win with cleanse discipline.
Speedrun

Speed notes, not gospel

Fast Warlord's Ruin runs come from cleanse discipline, not tricks.

1

Pre-light, then fight

In both boss rooms, get braziers lit before you open a damage window so a cleanse is always one step away. Most resets happen because someone froze reaching for fire mid-DPS.

2

Bank totem time at Rathil

Cleansing more totems buys a longer DPS window. A team that banks the window can two-phase Rathil instead of grinding extra cycles.

3

Chain the floors at Hefnd

The final fight is a chase. Assign who lights which brazier per floor so the team arrives, cleanses, and bursts without hunting for fire on a fresh floor.

4

Respect the cage

The single biggest first-run time loss is dying in Rathil's cage. Eyes first, every time. A clean cage escape beats any fancy route.

Rewards

What you're farming for

Featured rewards: Two dungeons are featured each week. Featured: Standard and Master drop Tier 5 weapons and armor; the Director challenge and hidden chests drop Tier 5 on a weekly lockout. Not featured: Standard drops Tier 3 weapons and armor; Master still drops Tier 5.

The exotic chase

Buried Bloodline is an exotic Void sidearm (Rocket-Assisted Frame, Special ammo). Its intrinsic Hungering Quarrel fires double tracking bolts that leech health on hit — perfect for this dungeon's survival loop. It only drops from the final boss, Hefnd's Vengeance, at a low base rate; dungeon Triumphs can boost your first drop.

The catalyst (Splitvein Lineage — weaken on hit while Devour is active) is a separate chase: complete the secret "In the Shadow of the Mountain" quest (collect Hefnd Bones, Dark Ether Tinctures, and Blighted Wishing Glass from hidden rooms), then solve three Taken-totem puzzles and beat a secret boss (Primeval Thressia, Font of Blight) for the catalyst chest in Hefnd's Cairn.

Encounter loot

The Warlord's Ruin weapon set is Wish-themed and fixed. Per-encounter sources:

  1. Rathil: Vengeful Whisper (bow), Dragoncult Sickle (sword), Indebted Kindness (rocket sidearm).
  2. Locus of Wailing Grief: Vengeful Whisper, Naeem's Lance (sniper), Indebted Kindness.
  3. Hefnd's Vengeance: Buried Bloodline, Naeem's Lance, Indebted Kindness, Dragoncult Sickle.

Plus the Wish-themed armor set with set bonuses. (There's no "Brya's Love" in this dungeon — that's a different activity; ignore guides that list it here.)
