DefiantBattleground: EDZ

A Shadow Legion Cabal battleground that cracks open into the Ascendant Plane and a Pyramid ship, re-taught in modern Grandmaster Vanguard Alert language. Clear the prison, cross into the Taken corruption of the Witness, manage champion frame coverage instead of old Artifact mods, and finish Warden Vincu'us through a Dark Fetor shield gauntlet. The threat here is the mechanic, not the health bar.

What this run really is

Defiant Battleground: EDZ is primarily a Cabal-then-Taken battleground — Shadow Legion Cabal up front (with some Fallen mixed in), then Taken corrupted by the Witness once you cross into the Ascendant Plane. In a Grandmaster Alert its danger isn't the layout, it's the Dark Fetor gas and the respawn-restricted boss arena at the end. Treat the approach as objective-marker pushes and the Warden room as a survival-and-mechanic puzzle, not a DPS race.

The one-sentence identity

Clear the Shadow Legion prison, cross into the Taken-held Ascendant Plane to break Exomida, then burn Warden Vincu'us while surviving Dark Fetor gas and breaking his immunity shield with purified Taken essence orbs.

Everything you bring serves three jobs: survive the gas and the cascade, cover the champion types present, and break the Warden's shield fast so you get a clean damage window. Build for those, not for the trash.

What old guides get wrong

  • They tell you to slot a seasonal anti-Champion Artifact mod. Stun is frame-intrinsic now — bring the right archetypes (weapon guide).
  • They quote a fixed champion list. GM champion types and counts follow the weekly modifier set.
  • They name a specific Adept reward. The chase is the weekly Tier 5 weapon, and it changes every reset.
  • They treat the Warden as a tank-and-spank. In GM, the Dark Fetor gas, the respawn-restricted arena, and the shield-break mechanic end far more runs than his health bar.
01 · Champion Coverage

Cover the frames, not the mods

Anti-Champion is built into weapon frames now — there's no Artifact mod to forget. Bring archetypes that cover the types the week assigns. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set.

Per weekly modifier set

Barrier

› Pierce / break the shield
If a week's modifiers add Barrier Champions, Cabal Centurions typically wear the tag — bring a Barrier-intrinsic frame to strip the shield.
Per weekly modifier set

Overload

› Disrupt to stop the heal
Appears as Overload Taken Hobgoblin — they snipe from range and regenerate. An Overload frame interrupts them so they stop healing. Focus them first or they pick your team apart from across the courtyard.
Per weekly modifier set

Unstoppable

› Stagger before it charges
Variants include Unstoppable Incendior and Unstoppable Taken Phalanx — they rush and hit hard. An Unstoppable frame staggers them at range. Stun, then delete before they close the gap or shove you out of cover.
The modifier readout, every time: (1) enemy pressure — which champions, shields, and faction units; (2) weekly modifiers — surge, threat, banes, player stakes; (3) the single modifier most likely to wipe a casual team; (4) one build swap that answers it. Run that readout on the launch screen before every GM Alert. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set. The hub's modifier glossary explains Medusa, Focused Fire, and the rest.
02 · The Route

Prison, plane, and the Warden

Five beats: clear the Shadow Legion prison, cross into the Taken-held Ascendant Plane, break mid-boss Exomida at the Pyramid courtyard, survive Warden Vincu'us through his shield gauntlet, then rescue and extract. The skill is knowing the gas-and-shield rhythm at the end. Here's the route at a glance; each beat below carries its own notes.

Defiant Battleground: EDZ full route A top-to-bottom route through five beats following the red path: 1 Clear the Shadow Legion across the EDZ prison, ending on mid-boss Bracus Viguln by the water with the Pyramid ship; 2 Enter the Ascendant Plane and Taken zone using Mara Sov's power, destroying Taken Blights and igniting Balefires; 3 mid-boss Exomida, a corrupted Taken Servitor, at the Pyramid courtyard with a Blight that spawns left or right; 4 final boss Warden Vincu'us in a respawn-restricted arena flooded with Dark Fetor gas; 5 rescue the captured allies and extract. Beat · Clear the Shadow Legion (EDZ)

The Prison Push

"Follow the markers, thin the Legion, reach the water."
The loop
  1. Fight through Shadow Legion Cabal (with some Eliksni mixed in) across the EDZ prison, following the objective markers from area to area.
  2. Push to the mid-boss: Bracus Viguln, a Cabal Centurion with no special mechanics — he's killed by volume of fire. Strip his shield, focus down, move on.
  3. Continue to the water with the Pyramid ship looming overhead — this is the platform where you'll cross into the Ascendant Plane.
PaceThis stretch is forgiving on Normal and lethal on GM only if you sprint blind. Move as a group, cover-to-cover; a hero rush here burns a revive token you'll want at the Warden.
ThreatMatch the weekly threat element with a resist mod before the first real fight — GM chip damage from massed Cabal adds up fastest in the open prison lanes.
2
Beat · Enter the Ascendant Plane / Taken Zone

The Ascendant Crossover

"Mara's power opens the door; Blights and Balefires hold it open."
The loop
  1. At the platform, use Mara Sov's power to cross into the Ascendant Plane — the enemy faction flips to Taken corrupted by the Witness.
  2. Push through the Taken-filled paths, destroying Taken Blights that bar the way and igniting Balefires to open the route toward the Pyramid.
  3. Don't outrun the team — Taken pop-in around Blights punishes a lone pusher. Clear each Blight pocket before advancing.
BlightsTaken Blights are darkness orbs that empower nearby Taken and gate progress. Burn them down promptly — leaving one up lets the surrounding Taken bully your team.
BalefireIgniting a Balefire is the same verb you'll use at the boss to make a safe zone. Get used to the prompt now — the rhythm matters at the Warden.
3
Mid-boss · Exomida, Taken of the Witness

Exomida, the corrupted Servitor

"Damage, immune, break the Blight, repeat."
The loop
  1. At the Pyramid courtyard, engage Exomida, a large corrupted (Taken) Servitor with a three-phase health bar.
  2. Damage it until it goes immune, then clear the Taken guarding a Blight that spawns on the left or right and destroy the Blight to resume damage.
  3. Repeat the damage-then-Blight cycle through all three phases to defeat it and open the path to the Warden.
Call sidesThe immunity Blight spawns left or right — call the side the instant Exomida shields so the team rotates as one rather than splitting and dying piecemeal.
Add wallTaken Phalanxes and Hobgoblins guard the Blight. In GM, the add wall is deadlier than Exomida — clear an approach lane before you sprint the Blight.
AmmoThis is your last real fight before the respawn-restricted boss. Top up Special and Heavy after Exomida falls and agree who grabs bricks at the Warden.
4
Boss · Warden Vincu'us (respawn-restricted)

Warden Vincu'us, through the Dark Fetor

"His health bar isn't the threat — the gas and the shield are."
The loop
  1. Warden Vincu'us — a Cabal Colossus of the Shadow Legion — drops into a respawn-restricted arena. Find cover and start your first open damage phase.
  2. After he loses roughly a third of his health, he raises an immunity shield and floods the arena with damaging Dark Fetor gas (it ramps up and kills fast).
  3. Plant/ignite a Balefire to create a safe zone — this spawns waves of Taken. Kill the Taken Anomalies (Wizard-type).
  4. Collect and purify/consecrate the Anomalies' essences into thrown orbs, then hurl those orbs at the Warden to break the shield and reopen a damage phase.
  5. Burn his next third, then repeat the shield-break sequence at a second Balefire for the final third. Bank a revive token for the last phase.
GasStanding in Dark Fetor without an active Balefire safe zone is the #1 cause of death here. The moment the shield goes up, get to a lit Balefire — no "one more shot."
OrbsThe shield only drops to purified essence orbs — bullets won't touch it. Assign an orb-runner so essences get consecrated and thrown fast; a slow break means more time in the gas.
CascadeThe arena is respawn-restricted: one death can cascade into a full wipe. Spread out, don't share a barrage, and rez only from inside the safe zone.
BarrageWatch for the Warden's Arc slug launcher, cluster missiles, and quake attacks while you handle mechanics. Keep one eye on him even mid-orb — getting caught out of cover is a free body.
Map · Warden's ArenaBoss · Dark Fetor Shield Gauntlet
Warden Vincu'us arena map A respawn-restricted boss arena. Warden Vincu'us, a Cabal Colossus, fights from the centre. After losing about a third of his health he raises an immunity shield and floods the whole arena with lethal Dark Fetor gas. Two Balefire stations sit to the left and right; igniting one creates a circular safe zone that holds back the gas and spawns waves of Taken. Players kill Taken Anomalies (Wizard-type) that spawn near the safe zone, collect and purify their essences into orbs, and hurl the orbs at the Warden to break the shield. The sequence repeats at the second Balefire for his final third. Cover sits around the rim, and the prisoner holding area with the exit stairs is at the far side. Dark Fetor gas fills the arena during shield phases Balefire 1 safe zone · 2nd & 3rd third Balefire 2 safe zone · final third Warden Vincu'us hurl purified orbs to break shield Taken Anomalies → collect essence prisoner hold stairs · rescue & extract ⚠ respawn-restricted — a single death can cascade into a full wipe

Beat · Rescue and Extract

The Prisoner Hold

"Climb the stairs, free the captives, claim the rewards."
The loop
  1. With the Warden down, climb the stairs to the prisoner holding area at the far side of the arena.
  2. Rescue the captured allies being held there to complete the objective.
  3. Claim end-of-activity rewards — and on a GM Alert, your grade-scaled engrams and the weekly weapon if you cleared at Grade B or better.
CleanupLingering Taken or Cabal may still be alive after the Warden falls. Sweep before you walk the stairs so a stray Hobgoblin doesn't snipe a tired team on the victory lap.
03 · Loadout by Role

Bring four jobs, not four guns

A GM team is happiest when each player owns a job. Full build cards live in the class guides and the Prismatic deep dive — these are the jobs to fill and the archetypes that fill them. Names rotate with the meta; the jobs don't.

Anchor / Control

Room control + self-sustain

Hold space and keep the team topped through Taken and Cabal add waves.

  • Warlock — Void Devour or the Prismatic Getaway loop.
  • Titan — Strand Banner of War for team woven mail.
  • A reliable add-clear Primary that respects the surge.

Champion Lock

Frame coverage

Carry the intrinsic stuns the week assigns.

  • Overload + Unstoppable frames when the weekly set lists those types.
  • Add a Barrier frame on weeks the launch screen lists it.
  • See the weapon guide for which archetypes carry each stun.

Boss Burst

Damage in the shield windows

Damage windows are short and gated by the shield break — burst beats sustained.

  • Hunter — Nighthawk Golden Gun for a clean single-shot nuke.
  • Titan — Thundercrash as a burst swap.
  • A heavy you can fire-and-reposition (rocket / LFR).

Emergency Support

Safe revive / orb runner

The insurance that saves a token in the respawn-restricted room.

  • Hunter — Void invis (Gyrfalcon / Omnioculus) for safe rezzes.
  • A healing or overshield tool for the Dark Fetor phases.
  • A debuff (Tractor / Div) to speed the Warden's damage windows.
Loadout note: these are the mid-2026 (Monument-era) jobs and archetypes — match the weekly surge when you pick your elements. For full, current builds, the class pages go deeper than any single route guide.
04 · Modifier Adjustment

What changes when the modifiers do

The route is evergreen, but the week's modifiers decide how you play it. The most common GM swings and the one adjustment each one asks for:

Medusa

Looking at affected enemies stacks Stasis slow toward a freeze. Shorten the Ascendant courtyard sightlines, peek-and-cover, and never hard-scope a Taken Hobgoblin lane you can't disengage from.

No Radar / Blackout

You lose your spawn warnings and melees hit harder. Clear corners before committing, hold cover near the Balefires, and call Taken Anomaly and Blight positions by voice.

Focused Fire

Heightened incoming damage. Tighten cover discipline everywhere and shorten your exposure windows — peek, fire, drop back. The Warden's barrage and the Dark Fetor gas are twice as punishing under it.

Harsh threat / surge

Slot the matching resist mod for the threat element and match your DPS element to the surge on the Warden. A mismatched surge can add a whole extra shield-break cycle.

Champion types follow the weekly modifier set: the exact champions, banes, surge, threat, and player stakes come from the week's GM Alert modifier list, shown on the launch screen.
05 · Common Wipes

Why teams actually lose this

Almost none of it is the boss' raw health. Defiant Battleground: EDZ wipes groups in four predictable ways — kill these habits and the run is yours.

1

Eating the Dark Fetor gas

Standing in the Warden's Dark Fetor during shield phases without an active Balefire safe zone ramps up and quickly kills the team. Get to a lit Balefire the instant the shield goes up — never trade a gas tick for one more shot.

2

The respawn-restricted cascade

The final boss arena is respawn-restricted, so a single death can cascade into a full team wipe and force restarting the boss fight. Spread out, bank tokens, and rez only from inside the safe zone.

3

Drowning in add density

High add density and high-Power Taken/Cabal mobs overwhelm teams, especially around Blights and Anomaly/essence-collection moments. Hold a kill lane, clear the wall before you sprint the orb, and don't split solo.

4

Caught by the barrage

Getting caught by the Warden's ranged barrage — Arc slug launcher, cluster missiles, quake attacks — while distracted with mechanics or out of cover ends runs fast. Keep one eye on him even mid-orb, and stay behind hard cover.

Weekly reward: when Defiant Battleground: EDZ is the active Grandmaster Alert, a Grade B or better clear awards the week's featured weapon at Tier 5 (first clear pre-masterworked with its origin trait). The weapon changes weekly — this route is evergreen, the reward is not. See the hub reward ladder.
