Lake ofShadows

A classic EDZ strike, re-taught in modern Grandmaster Vanguard Alert language. Push from Trostland through the Taken corruption, destroy the shielded blights, press the dam, and finish a large Taken boss over the lake — managing champion frame coverage instead of old Artifact mods. The boss changed when the strike was reworked in Season of Defiance: pre-rework it was Grask, the Consumed; the current boss is Gor'ath Gath, both large Taken Phalanxes.

What this run really is

Lake of Shadows is a short EDZ strike where the Taken have corrupted the European Dead Zone — in a Grandmaster Alert its danger isn't the layout, it's the relentless add pressure and the knockback hazards in the boss arena. Treat the approach as a champion-clearing gauntlet and the lake room as a positioning puzzle, not a DPS race.

The one-sentence identity

Push from Trostland through Fallen and Cabal into the Taken corruption, destroy the shielded blight cores, fight through the dam / Reservoir, then burn a large Taken boss over the lake while you control endless Taken adds and avoid the rising blight pool.

Everything you bring serves three jobs: survive the corridors, cover the champion types present, and deal burst on the boss between add waves. Build for those, not for the trash.

What old guides get wrong

  • They name a specific final boss. The strike was reworked — pre-rework it was "Grask, the Consumed" (a shielded Taken Phalanx); after the Season of Defiance rework the boss is Gor'ath Gath, another large Taken Phalanx — not Grask.
  • They tell you to slot a seasonal anti-Champion Artifact mod. Stun is frame-intrinsic now — bring the right archetypes (weapon guide).
  • They quote a fixed champion list. GM champion types and counts follow the weekly modifier set.
  • They name a specific Adept reward. The chase is the weekly Tier 5 weapon, and it changes every reset.
01 · Champion Coverage

Cover the frames, not the mods

Anti-Champion is built into weapon frames now — there's no Artifact mod to forget. Bring archetypes that cover the types the week assigns. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set.

Reliably attested

Barrier

› Pierce / break the shield
Taken Knights / Centurions wear the Barrier tag here. Bring a Barrier-intrinsic frame to strip the shield, then finish. Don't waste a Super into an unbroken shield in the tight blight and dam sections.
Per weekly modifier set

Overload

› Disrupt to stop the heal
Overload Captains appeared in the older version. If the weekly set lists Overload, an Overload frame interrupts and stops the heal.
Reliably attested

Unstoppable

› Stagger before it closes
Unstoppable Taken Phalanxes push hard in close quarters. An Unstoppable frame staggers them at range — stun, then delete before they corner you in the blight or dam corridors.
The modifier readout, every time: (1) enemy pressure — which champions, shields, and faction units; (2) weekly modifiers — surge, threat, banes, player stakes; (3) the single modifier most likely to wipe a casual team; (4) one build swap that answers it. Run that readout on the launch screen before every GM Alert. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set. The hub's modifier glossary explains Medusa, Focused Fire, and the rest.
02 · The Route

Trostland to the lake

Four beats: the corrupted EDZ approach, the shielded blights, the dam / Reservoir interior, and the boss arena at the lake. The whole strike is a near-straight line — the skill is clearing every champion before you push and surviving the add storm at the end. Here's the route at a glance; each beat below carries its own notes.

Full routeEDZ surface → the lake arena
Lake of Shadows full route A top-to-bottom route through four areas following the jade path: 1 the corrupted EDZ approach from Trostland and Maevic Square through Fallen and Cabal into the Taken, 2 the Taken Blights where you enter shield bubbles to destroy shielded cores while adds swarm, 3 the Dam and Reservoir interior of tight stairwells and gantries, 4 the boss arena at the lake where you fight the large Taken Phalanx Gor'ath Gath amid heavy add pressure while destroying the Pyramid Spikes that raise a lethal Blight pool. Champion spawn rooms, the shielded blights, and the lethal blight pool are marked. ▼ deeper 1 Surface · Trostland Corrupted Approach Push through Fallen & Cabal into the Taken corruption 2 Objective · blights Taken Blights Enter shield bubbles · destroy cores · champions gate here champ spawns 3 Interior · dam Dam / Reservoir Tight stairwells & gantries · clear rift-wall blockades tight cover 4 Boss · the lake Lake Arena Fight Gor'ath Gath · DPS amid add storm · clear spikes blight pool

1
Beat · Corrupted Approach

The Trostland Push

"Clear the corrupted EDZ approach without spending your tokens."
The loop
  1. Drop in around Trostland / Maevic Square and push toward the leading edge of the Taken corruption, fighting through Fallen and Cabal on the way.
  2. Hold the first piece of hard cover and let the team stack before crossing the open ground.
  3. Thin the early adds toward the first blight objective — these are the cheap kills that snowball into chip damage if ignored.
PaceThis beat is forgiving on Normal and lethal on GM only if you sprint blind. Move as a group, cover-to-cover; a hero rush here burns a revive token you'll want at the lake.
ThreatMatch the weekly threat element with a resist mod before the first real fight — GM chip damage from the mixed Fallen / Cabal / Taken pressure adds up fastest in the open.
2
Beat · Taken Blights

Destroy the Blights

"Enter the bubble, kill the core, don't get cornered."
The loop
  1. Reach the signature clear-the-blight phase. Step into the damaging shield bubbles to attack the shielded blight cores — this is the objective gate.
  2. Expect the champions here — clear them with the matching frame coverage before committing to a core, or the bubble damage and adds collapse on you.
  3. Cut down the swarming Taken — Centurions, Psions, Phalanxes / Thralls — that pour in while you're exposed inside the bubble.
ChampionThis is a prime Barrier / Unstoppable spawn zone, and the blight phase is gated behind champions in the Nightfall. Call the type out, strip or stagger with the right frame, then collapse together.
BubbleThe shield bubble damages you while you're inside it. Dip in to burn the core, then step out to heal — don't facetank the bubble while adds chunk you.
ScoreIf a scoring modifier is up, the blight adds bank easy points — but a wipe costs more than a fast clear. Clean beats quick.
3
Beat · Dam / Reservoir

Press the Dam

"Tight stairwells reward patience and punish greed."
The loop
  1. Move through the dam / Reservoir interior — tight stairwells, gantries, and a loading-bay chamber.
  2. Clear the rift-wall blockades — Taken barriers that gate progress — to open the path to the final area.
  3. Clear each room fully before advancing — a left-behind Barrier Knight in a stairwell is a free wipe in GM's tight corridors.
CorridorsThe dam interior is cramped. Funnel adds into a kill lane rather than chasing them; major Taken love to flank in close quarters.
AmmoThis is the last calm stretch before the boss. Top up Special and Heavy, agree who grabs bricks, and don't dump your Heavy on trash here.
4
Boss · The Lake Arena

The Taken boss, over the lake

"His health bar isn't the threat — the add storm and the knockback are."
The loop
  1. Drop into the open lake arena and engage Gor'ath Gath, the large Taken Phalanx. Taken adds (Goblins / Eyes) can keep the boss invulnerable until they're cleared.
  2. Gor'ath Gath periodically summons several Pyramid Spikes around the arena. Leaving any spike intact makes a Blight pool rise from the ground, shrinking your footing; destroy ALL the spikes to retract the hazard until they're summoned again. Manage the spikes between damage windows rather than hunting a single central core.
  3. The boss leans on ranged projectiles plus a Shadowshot-style slowing tether (break line of sight / don't eat the tether at close range).
  4. Damage the boss from cover and distance between add waves — burst, reposition, burst again. Keep clearing the adds that buff, shield, or re-stealth the boss.
  5. Watch the Blight pool the spikes raise and the water at the lake edge — both punish poor positioning, and Epitaph spawns blight geysers from defeated Taken.
  6. Repeat the burst-and-reposition cycle until he falls. Bank a revive token in reserve for the final phase.
KnockbackThe GM modifier Grask's Bile greatly increases knockback and environmental damage — a hit near the rising pool or the lake edge can throw you off a ledge or into a hazard. Fight with your back to safe ground.
AddsAdd pressure is continuous. Taken that buff or shield the boss can render it invulnerable — keep one player on add duty at all times or damage stalls.
BurstThe boss rewards burst windows over sustained DPS because you're constantly repositioning around the pool and tether. A Nighthawk Golden Gun or a heavy burst Super lands clean damage between waves.

Bring four jobs, not four guns

A GM team is happiest when each player owns a job. Full build cards live in the class guides and the Prismatic deep dive — these are the jobs to fill and the archetypes that fill them. Names rotate with the meta; the jobs don't.

Anchor / Control

Room control + self-sustain

Hold space and keep the team topped through the endless Taken waves.

  • Warlock — Void Devour or the Prismatic Getaway loop.
  • Titan — Strand Banner of War for team woven mail.
  • A reliable add-clear Primary that respects the surge.

Champion Lock

Frame coverage

Carry the intrinsic stuns the week assigns.

  • Barrier + Unstoppable frames as the baseline here.
  • Add an Overload frame only on weeks it actually appears.
  • See the weapon guide for which archetypes carry each stun.

Boss Burst

Damage between add waves

Burst windows beat sustained DPS — you're always repositioning.

  • Hunter — Nighthawk Golden Gun for a clean single-shot nuke.
  • Titan — Thundercrash as a burst swap.
  • A heavy you can fire-and-reposition (rocket / LFR).

Emergency Support

Safe revive / reset

The insurance that saves a token.

  • Hunter — Void invis (Gyrfalcon / Omnioculus) for safe rezzes.
  • A healing or overshield tool for the lake room.
  • A debuff (Tractor / Div) to speed the boss phase.
Loadout note: these are the mid-2026 (Monument-era) jobs and archetypes — match the weekly surge when you pick your elements. For full, current builds, the class pages go deeper than any single route guide.
04 · Modifier Adjustment

What changes when the modifiers do

The route is evergreen, but the week's modifiers decide how you play it. The most common GM swings and the one adjustment each one asks for:

Medusa

Looking at affected enemies stacks Stasis slow toward a freeze. Shorten the blight and dam sightlines, peek-and-cover, and never hard-scope a corridor you can't disengage from.

No Radar / Blackout

You lose your spawn warnings and melees hit harder. Clear corners before committing, hold the dam stairwells, and call Taken spawns by voice — the lake add storm is brutal without radar.

Focused Fire

Heightened incoming damage. Tighten cover discipline everywhere and shorten your exposure windows — peek, fire, drop back. The blight bubbles and the lake pool are twice as punishing under it.

Harsh threat / surge

Slot the matching resist mod for the threat element and match your DPS element to the surge on the boss. A mismatched surge can double your phase count against a Taken Ultra's health bar.

Champion types follow the weekly modifier set: the exact champions, banes, surge, threat, and player stakes come from the week's GM Alert modifier list, shown on the launch screen.
05 · Common Wipes

Why teams actually lose this

Almost none of it is the boss's health bar. Lake of Shadows wipes groups in four predictable ways — kill these habits and the run is yours.

1

Drowning in the add storm

Relentless Taken spawns during the boss DPS phase — especially the adds that buff, shield, or interrupt the boss — overwhelm teams that all tunnel the boss. Keep one player on add duty so damage never stalls.

2

Knockback into hazards

Grask's Bile greatly increases knockback, and the rising Taken energy pool plus Epitaph blight geysers punish bad spots. A single hit can throw you off a ledge or into the pool. Fight with your back to safe ground.

3

Eating the pool, tether, or projectiles

Standing in blight bubbles / geysers or eating boss projectiles and the slowing tether at close range — instead of dealing damage from cover and distance — is a slow death. Burst from range, not from the boss's feet.

4

Skipping a champion

Failing to stun Barrier / Unstoppable champions in the blight and dam sections with the matching intrinsic weapon frames leads to cascading deaths in the tight corridors. Clear champions before advancing — never leave one behind a push.

Weekly reward: when Lake of Shadows is the active Grandmaster Alert, a Grade B or better clear awards the week's featured weapon at Tier 5 (first clear pre-masterworked with its origin trait). The weapon changes weekly — this route is evergreen, the reward is not. See the hub reward ladder.
