Liminality

A Pale Heart strike re-taught in modern Grandmaster Vanguard Alert language. Climb the mountain pass past the first Tormentor, drain the Purulence through Lucent Hive caves and lava caverns, portal into the ancient Precursor city, and finish Kataxiia, Tormentor of the Ahamkara in a pyramid arena where lava rises while the boss is immune. Manage champion frame coverage instead of old Artifact mods — the danger here is the floor and the one-shots, not the boss's health bar.

What this run really is

Liminality is a Pale Heart strike that threads Lucent Hive, The Dread, and Taken across a vertical climb — in a Grandmaster Alert its danger isn't the layout, it's the rising lava, the Taken ranged one-shots, and a boss whose immunity gate forces you into exposed side rooms. Treat the climb as a series of paired pushes and the boss room as an essence-relay puzzle under survival pressure, not a DPS race.

The one-sentence identity

Fight up the mountain pass and through the Purulence caves, break the Lucent Seals as lava rises, portal into the Precursor city, then break Kataxiia, Tormentor of the Ahamkara by ferrying Taken Essence to its Ahamkara skulls between immunity phases.

Everything you bring serves three jobs: survive the lava and one-shots, cover the champion types present, and land burst on Kataxiia in the windows the skulls open. Build for those, not for the trash.

What old guides get wrong

  • They tell you to slot a seasonal anti-Champion Artifact mod. Stun is frame-intrinsic now — bring the right archetypes (weapon guide).
  • They quote a fixed champion list. GM champion types and counts follow the weekly modifier set.
  • They name a specific Adept reward. The chase is the weekly Tier 5 weapon, and it changes every reset.
  • They treat Kataxiia as a tank-and-spank. In GM, the rising lava, Tormentor pressure, and add overload end far more runs than its health bar.
01 · Champion Coverage

Cover the frames, not the mods

Anti-Champion is built into weapon frames now — there's no Artifact mod to forget. Bring archetypes that cover the types the week assigns. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set.

Per weekly modifier set

Barrier

› Pierce / break the shield
Lucent Hive Knights wear the Barrier tag here. Bring a Barrier-intrinsic frame to strip the shield, then finish. Some are skippable on the climb — but never leave one alive behind a push.
Rotational — often absent

Overload

› Disrupt to stop the heal
Overload combatants regenerate and teleport. A featured Liminality GM has run with none present — so don't assume an Overload slot. If the week lists them, an Overload frame interrupts the heal; otherwise free up that slot.
Per weekly modifier set

Unstoppable

› Stagger before it charges
Unstoppable units rush and hit hard among the Dread and Taken. An Unstoppable frame staggers them at range — stun, then delete before they close, especially while you're exposed carrying Taken Essence.
The modifier readout, every time: (1) enemy pressure — which champions, shields, and faction units; (2) weekly modifiers — surge, threat, banes, player stakes; (3) the single modifier most likely to wipe a casual team; (4) one build swap that answers it. Run that readout on the launch screen before every GM Alert. Champion types follow the weekly modifier set. The hub's modifier glossary explains Medusa, Focused Fire, and the rest.
02 · The Route

The Pale Heart, top to bottom

Five beats: the mountain-pass climb, the Purulence caves, the lava caverns and Lucent Seals, the pyramid portal into the Precursor city, and Kataxiia's arena. The strike pushes you upward as lava rises — the skill is when to commit to a side room and when to hold high ground. Here's the route at a glance; each beat below carries its own notes.

Full routeMountain pass → Precursor city → arena
Liminality full route A top-to-bottom route through five areas following the gold path: 1 the Mountain Pass where the team meets the strike's first Tormentor amid Dread units, 2 the Purulence Caves with Lucent Hive where you drain energy to weaken a Wizard, 3 the Lava Caverns where you break Lucent Seals and solve Taken Energy puzzles as lava rises, 4 the Pyramid portal into the ancient Precursor city with a Veiled Statue defense, and 5 the final Ahamkara-skull arena where Kataxiia, Tormentor of the Ahamkara, fights over a lava pit. 1
Beat · Mountain Pass

The Mountain Pass & First Tormentor

"Get up the pass without burning a token on the first scythe."
The loop
  1. Open with the fight up the mountain pass, clearing the first wave of Dread units as you climb.
  2. The strike's first Tormentor meets you here. Break its exposed shoulders, stay out of its scythe (Abyssal Cleave) range, and don't let it Suppress your whole team at once.
  3. Push inside only after the Tormentor is down — chasing it into the open while Dread snipers hold the ridge is how the climb stalls.
TormentorThe first Tormentor previews the boss. Stay mobile, hit the shoulder weak points, and never melee it head-on — its scythe and Suppression punish a frontal push.
PaceForgiving on Normal, lethal on GM only if you sprint blind. Move as a group, cover-to-cover; a hero rush here burns a revive token you'll want at Kataxiia.
2
Beat · Purulence Caves

Caves & Drain the Purulence

"Charge the skull, keep the Wizard low — it comes back later."
The loop
  1. Move through the caves into Lucent Hive forces. Collect the cave's energy to power an Ahamkara skull and drain the Purulence.
  2. This weakens a Hive Lightbearer / Ravenous Taken Wizard. Keep it low — it returns weakened in the boss room, so the damage you bank here pays off later.
  3. Clear the cave's champions with matching frame coverage before moving up; the tight tunnels punish a left-behind shield.
ChampionExpect Barrier Knights in the Lucent Hive packs. Call the type, strip with the right frame, then collapse together — some are skippable, but a live one in a tunnel is a wipe.
SkullDraining the Purulence is the setup for the finale. Don't rush past the energy collection — the weakened Wizard is a free head start on a later phase.
3
Beat · Lava Caverns

Lava Caverns & Lucent Seals

"The lava is the clock — break the seals before the floor floods."
The loop
  1. Break the Lucent Hive seals by defeating the Seal-Keeper spawns that gate each door.
  2. Solve the Taken Energy puzzles to open the path while rising lava forces you upward — read the safe ledges before you drop.
  3. Enter side rooms in pairs. Soloing a room while lava rises and Taken Eyes spawn gets people killed with no revive.
LavaStanding in low sections as the lava floods kills fast. Treat rising lava as a hard timer — finish the seal, then climb. No lingering for one more kill.
PairsThe side rooms are two-player jobs. One carries, one covers the Taken Eyes and snipers — never split solo into a flooding pocket.
SightlinesIf Medusa or No Radar is active, the cavern lanes get dangerous. Shorten sightlines, hold corners, and don't hard-scope a lane you can't disengage from.
4
Beat · Pyramid & Precursor City

Portal & the Veiled Statue

"Tight rooms reward patience; the statue defense punishes greed."
The loop
  1. Pass The Dread inside the pyramid structure — funnel adds into a kill lane rather than chasing them through the halls.
  2. Take the portal into the ancient Precursor city. The space opens up; reset your bearings and don't over-peek the long lanes.
  3. Survive the enemy waves at the Veiled Statue defense. Hold a corner with cover, clear each wave fully, and top up ammo before the final arena.
DreadThe Dread mix here brings Suppression and Null/void pressure. Don't stand in the open — reposition behind cover and let their attacks miss.
AmmoThis is the last calm stretch before Kataxiia. Top up Special and Heavy, agree who grabs bricks, and don't dump your Heavy on trash here.
5
Boss · The Ahamkara Arena

Kataxiia, Tormentor of the Ahamkara

"Its health bar isn't the threat — the immunity gate and the lava are."
The loop
  1. Kataxiia sits at the back of the pyramid arena over a lava pit, immune to start. It's a Tormentor-class boss — scythe melee (Abyssal Cleave), Suppression, and Null/void attacks, with exposed shoulder weak points.
  2. Send pairs into the left and right side rooms (the Purulence / portal pockets) to retrieve Taken Essence/Energy, then use it to activate the two Ahamkara skulls — that drops the immunity and opens a damage window.
  3. Burst the shoulders in the window. After it loses roughly the first half / two-thirds of its health, Kataxiia re-shields and summons Dread / Taken reinforcements — including the returning weakened Wizard.
  4. Clear adds, then kill the spawned Subjugator mini-boss; its death drops the final Taken Essence to power the last Ahamkara skull and open the closing damage window.
  5. Watch the rising lava around the arena borders while Kataxiia is immune at the top — it's a survival timer layered over the relay. Bank a revive token for the last phase.
LavaLava rises around the arena borders during immunity. The arena floor and low sections flood — bodies lost there often can't be revived until someone reaches the boss room. Stay high, ferry essence on safe ground.
RelayImmunity only drops when both skulls are charged. Run essence in pairs from the side rooms — never solo a pocket while Taken Centurions and Hobgoblins hold the rooftops.
Re-shieldDon't keep firing into a re-shielded boss. After each gate it summons reinforcements; clear the adds and the Subjugator first, then take the next essence and skull.
BurstDamage windows are short, so burst beats sustained DPS. Stack a debuff and burst the shoulders the moment a skull lights up, then reset to cover.
Map · Kataxiia's ArenaBoss · Pyramid & Lava Pit
Kataxiia arena map A pyramid arena with Kataxiia, Tormentor of the Ahamkara, immune at the back over a lava pit. Two Ahamkara skulls sit on a central platform. Left and right side rooms (the Purulence and portal pockets) hold Taken Essence; pairs of Guardians retrieve essence and carry it to the skulls to drop the boss's immunity and open damage windows. After losing roughly half and then two-thirds of its health the boss re-shields and summons Dread and Taken reinforcements, eventually a Subjugator mini-boss whose death drops the final essence for the last skull. Lava rises around the arena borders while the boss is immune. Taken Centurions and Hobgoblin snipers hold the rooftops; the boss's shoulders are exposed weak points. ▲ lava rises around the borders while the boss is immune ▲ Kataxiia immune until both skulls charge · hit shoulders two Ahamkara skulls LEFT room Taken Essence · enter in pairs RIGHT room Taken Essence · enter in pairs Subjugator drops final essence rooftop one-shots rooftop one-shots ⚠ charge both skulls to drop immunity — re-shields at ~1/2 & 2/3 health, then summons reinforcements

03 · Loadout by Role

Bring four jobs, not four guns

A GM team is happiest when each player owns a job. Full build cards live in the class guides and the Prismatic deep dive — these are the jobs to fill and the archetypes that fill them. Names rotate with the meta; the jobs don't.

Anchor / Control

Room control + self-sustain

Hold space and keep the team topped through add waves and the statue defense.

  • Warlock — Void Devour or the Prismatic Getaway loop.
  • Titan — Strand Banner of War for team woven mail.
  • A reliable add-clear Primary that respects the surge.

Champion Lock

Frame coverage

Carry the intrinsic stuns the week assigns.

  • Barrier + Unstoppable frames as the baseline here.
  • Only add an Overload frame if the week lists them — Liminality has run with none.
  • See the weapon guide for which archetypes carry each stun.

Boss Burst

Damage in the skull windows

Burst windows beat sustained DPS — the immunity gate is short.

  • Hunter — Nighthawk Golden Gun for a clean single-shot nuke on the shoulders.
  • Titan — Thundercrash as a burst swap.
  • A heavy you can fire-and-reposition (rocket / LFR).

Emergency Support

Safe revive / essence ferry

The insurance that saves a token in the side rooms.

  • Hunter — Void invis (Gyrfalcon / Omnioculus) for safe rezzes and quiet essence runs.
  • A healing or overshield tool for the lava-edge phases.
  • A debuff (Tractor / Div) to speed the Kataxiia damage windows.
Loadout note: these are the mid-2026 (Monument-era) jobs and archetypes — match the weekly surge when you pick your elements. For full, current builds, the class pages go deeper than any single route guide.
04 · Modifier Adjustment

What changes when the modifiers do

The route is evergreen, but the week's modifiers decide how you play it. The most common GM swings and the one adjustment each one asks for:

Medusa

Looking at affected enemies stacks Stasis slow toward a freeze. Shorten the cavern sightlines, peek-and-cover, and never hard-scope a lane while lava forces you to keep moving.

No Radar / Blackout

You lose your spawn warnings and melees hit harder. Clear corners before committing to a side room, hold the pyramid cover, and call Taken Eye and sniper positions by voice.

Focused Fire

Heightened incoming damage — brutal with Taken one-shots already on the table. Tighten cover discipline everywhere and shorten your exposure windows while carrying essence.

Harsh threat / surge

Slot the matching resist mod for the threat element and match your DPS element to the surge on Kataxiia's shoulders. A mismatched surge can add a whole immunity cycle.

Champion types follow the weekly modifier set: the exact champions, banes, surge, threat, and player stakes come from the week's GM Alert modifier list, shown on the launch screen.
05 · Common Wipes

Why teams actually lose this

Almost none of it is the boss. Liminality wipes groups in four predictable ways — kill these habits and the run is yours.

1

Standing in rising lava

Lingering in low sections or on the arena floor as lava floods kills fast, and bodies lost in flooded areas often can't be revived until someone reaches the boss room. Climb early, ferry essence on safe ground.

2

Taken ranged one-shots

Taken Centurions and Hobgoblin snipers on the rooftops can kill instantly at GM power — especially while you're exposed carrying Taken Essence. Break their line of sight before you move.

3

Add overload in the boss room

Damaging Kataxiia before clearing adds — plus the returning Wizard and Barrier Knights — gets teams overwhelmed. Clear the wave and the Subjugator first, then take essence and burst.

4

Soloing the Taken Essence puzzle

Rushing the side rooms solo while lava rises and Taken Eyes spawn leads to deaths with no revive. Enter pockets in pairs — one carries, one covers — every single time.

Weekly reward: when Liminality is the active Grandmaster Alert, a Grade B or better clear awards the week's featured weapon at Tier 5 (first clear pre-masterworked with its origin trait). The weapon changes weekly — this route is evergreen, the reward is not. See the hub reward ladder.
