Kill a god who cannot die

Crota's End is a descent into the Hive death-realm beneath the Moon to permanently kill the god-knight who slaughtered a generation of Guardians. It is a raid about holding stolen light against a darkness that is literally the enemy god's will — a place where the law of the room is one Hive god's law, and intruders are simply not meant to survive it.

Everything the throne does to you — the crushing dark, the conjured bridge, the Deathsinger's chant, the shield only a relic sword can break — is the machinery of a god rejecting anyone who is not his own kin. And the only way to end him is to turn his own Sword Logic back on him, striking him down with a blade pried from one of his own knights.

01 · The Setting

A throne world where the god's law is physics

Bored into the Moon and down into a Hive god's own death-realm, Crota's End is not a dungeon but a pocket of reality shaped entirely by his will — a place that exists to reject you.

The raid drops the fireteam into the Hellmouth, the vast Hive complex bored into the Moon, and down into the Oversoul Throne — the ascendant death-realm of Crota, Son of Oryx. This is not an ordinary dungeon but a Throne World, a pocket of reality shaped entirely by a Hive god's will, where his law is physics: darkness devours the light, and only the Enlightened may perceive and act on the god's own machinery.

The place is a graveyard. Crota wielded the Sword of Crota to kill thousands of Guardians during the Great Disaster, the City's catastrophic attempt to retake the Moon, and his crushing victory kept the Vanguard away for over a century. Every mechanic — the crushing Weight of Darkness, the conjured bridge, the Deathsinger's chant, the shield that only a relic sword can break — is the Throne rejecting intruders who are not its master's kin.

Crota is immortal while his soul is anchored: after his victory he slept on this throne, his essence tethered to a crystal so he could always return. Killing him for real means severing that anchor and striking him down with an ascendant Hive blade — pried from one of his own Swordbearers — because Sword Logic only accepts a death dealt by a worthy weapon in his own realm.

Why the sword? Sword Logic is the Hive creed that the strong deserve to exist and the weak deserve to be unmade — proven by the blade. To kill a Hive god truly, you must beat him at his own philosophy: in his own realm, with his own kind of weapon, dealing the death he insists only the worthy can deal.
02 · The dead and the damned

A god-knight, a survivor, and the singer who shields him

Three figures define the throne: the god you came to kill, the woman whose vengeance sends you down, and the courtier whose song keeps him untouchable.

Final boss

Crota, Son of Oryx

The "Eater of Hope," bred by Oryx the Taken King as the antithesis of the Traveler's promise. He wields the Sword of Crota and killed thousands of Guardians in the Great Disaster, including the legendary Titan Wei Ning. Immortal so long as his soul remains anchored to his throne.

Sole survivor · questgiver

Eris Morn

The lone survivor of the first fireteam that tried to assassinate Crota, she lost her eyes and her Ghost in the Hellmouth and emerged Hive-marked and obsessed with ending him. In the story frame she is the reason Guardians descend at all — the raid is her vengeance made real.

Crota's cherished courtier

Ir Yût, the Deathsinger

A Hive Wizard and Deathsinger, one of Crota's most prized disciples, who long ago gave up rebuilding the Choir of Deathsingers. Her Deathsong is weaponized Sword Logic given voice — "the song is death; to hear it is to die" — and it shields Crota's soul while she sings.

BuriedEris did not descend alone. Six went into the Hellmouth to kill a god; one came back, without her eyes. Eriana-3, Toland, Omar Agah, Sai Mota, and Vell Tarlowe fell before you ever dropped — their failure is why Eris sends Guardians down, and why the raid is framed as vengeance rather than conquest.
03 · The story, encounter by encounter

What each room is really doing to you

Read as narrative, the mechanics stop being arbitrary. Every lamp, bridge, and chant is the throne rejecting flesh that is not its master's kin — until you force it to accept a death it never wanted to allow.

The Abyss

The dark that devours light

The team drops into a pitch-black chasm where the god's realm literally eats the light away from a line of lamps. Standing in the dark stacks the Weight of Darkness — the Throne crushing anyone unascended — until it slows and finally wipes the fireteam. Guardians sprint lamp to lamp, carrying borrowed light through a place built to snuff it out.

The Bridge

Seizing the god's machinery

A bottomless chasm can only be crossed by a bridge conjured with the Hive's own ritual power from a central plate, under the fire of Annihilator Totems. Only the Enlightened may build it and wield the relic sword, and only a Chalice- or sword-bearer may cross without Bane of the Swordless killing them. This is Guardians forcing the Throne to admit them the way it admits Crota's own knights.

Ir Yût, the Deathsinger

Silencing the Deathsong

Ir Yût begins the Liturgy of Ruin — a chant that ends the fireteam when it completes and shields Crota's soul while it sings. Enlightened players pass green barriers into the towers to silence her Shieldsingers, then break her protection and burst her down. Cutting off her song severs the ritual keeping the god-knight untouchable.

Crota, Son of Oryx

A death the Sword Logic accepts

The god-knight is invulnerable to ordinary fire, so the team stuns him to a kneel to drop his shield, then cuts him with a Swordbearer's relic blade — the only weapon his own realm will let wound him. All the while the Enlightened player must destroy the Oversoul before it charges and wipes the team. Turning Crota's Sword Logic against him kills the Eater of Hope for good.

04 · Buried in the throne

The lore hidden in the loot

The reveals the raid never says out loud live in Grimoire, item text, and the stray details around what Crota's End really cost.

Ir Yût, the Deathsinger
Grimoire card
"The song is death. To hear it is to die. To know the words is mortal."

Toland's musing on the Deathsong: the Deathsinger becomes part of a thing "vast and burning that rots and peels into ash but never ever ends," so she can sing death without dying of it.

Necrochasm
Exotic weapon
"A worm grew in the husk of the pit, and it hungered."

The chase auto rifle, cultivated up from the Husk of the Pit through the Bottomless Pit quest — a weapon born from Hive worm-larva, the raid's own corruption turned into a tool.

The Great Disaster
Grimoire / lore
"Crota marches with a thousand Knights and the sky over Mare Imbrium has turned to green fire."

The doomed Guardian assault on the Moon that Crota broke, killing thousands and keeping the Vanguard off the Moon for a century — the wound the raid finally avenges.

The First Crota Fireteam
Lore / Item text
"Six of us went down into that pit."

Eris Morn, Eriana-3, Toland, Omar Agah, Sai Mota, and Vell Tarlowe descended before you and failed. Their deaths are why Eris sends Guardians down, and why the raid is framed as vengeance.

05 · Where it sits in the saga

The Hive teach the saga its cruelest law

Crota's End sits firmly in the Light and Darkness Saga — Destiny's foundational arc about the Traveler's Light versus the Darkness and its Hive worshippers. Crota is a Son of Oryx, and killing him here directly sets up The Taken King, where Oryx invades the system to avenge his slain child.

It debuted in Destiny 1 (The Dark Below, 2014) as the game's second raid and was reprised in Destiny 2 during Season of the Witch (2023), a return of legacy Moon content, so the story below is the original fiction. Crota's shadow keeps falling across the saga as a Nightmare: Shadowkeep's Nightmare Hunt “Despair” and, in The Final Shape (2024), the mission “The Visitation.”

Because it is a reprised classic rather than new fiction, it functions as saga backstory: it fleshes out Eris Morn, the Great Disaster, and the Hive's Sword Logic — the ideas the whole Light-and-Darkness conflict is built on — well before the newer Fate Saga content. His exile was Savathûn's doing: she manipulated the young prince into cutting a path to the Vex Network, and Oryx cast him out for it.

Keep reading: the factions & figures for the Hive, Oryx, and Eris Morn, the hidden cosmology for the Sword Logic and the Darkness it serves, and the timeline for how the Great Disaster and The Taken King bracket this raid.
