Eater of Worlds is the smallest endgame raid activity Destiny 2 ever shipped — four short stages, one core idea: match the element. Know that it is not launchable today, and that almost everything except the mechanics has changed since 2017.

Status, checked 2026-09-25: on 2026-09-21 Bungie announced it is working to bring vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids back into Destiny 2, with details “in the coming months” and no dates. Nothing has been restored yet, so Eater of Worlds still can't be launched and this page stays a retrospective until it returns. Bungie — The Next Chapter

Where it sits now

Eater of Worlds was a raid lair — a bite-sized raid bolted onto the Leviathan, introduced with Curse of Osiris (Dec 2017). It shared the Leviathan's loadout-prestige systems with the base raid and Spire of Stars.

It is vaulted. Pre-Garden raids other than Last Wish were removed with Beyond Light (2020). You cannot launch it from the Director unless Bungie restores it. Treat this page as a retrospective and an elemental-mechanic motif example.

Stable truths

  • One mechanic, three flavors. Everything keys off Arc / Solar / Void — laser the matching mine, feed the matching shield segment, repeat.
  • Craniums are the relic. You carry Vex Craniums of a specific element, charge them at braziers into lasers, and use them to defuse the barrier mines and break Argos's shield.
  • The descent kills more than enemies do. The opening is a jumping-puzzle traversal — falls end runs.
  • Argos is a shield-gate boss. No DPS until you remove his elemental shield by feeding it the matching craniums.
  • It is short. A practiced six can clear in ~10–15 minutes. This was the "weekly milestone" lair, not a marathon.
What stale guides get wrong: old 2017–2018 write-ups assume Leviathan prestige loadout modifiers (specific-element-only, etc.), the original power grind, and a live loot table that no longer exists. The encounter logic below is durable; any loadout, modifier, drop, or "best weapon" claim from that era is dead. The Leviathan raid lairs also used a now-removed token/Emperor Calus reward economy — ignore it.
The Fiction

Why you were here

This lair is vaulted now, but the elemental shield-break below still makes sense once you know what Argos was doing in the Emperor's gut. Here's the story behind the descent.

The Leviathan's underbelly

In the Leviathan's digestive underbelly, a Vex incursion gathered around Argos, Planetary Core — a Vex Mind gorging on the ship's harvested planetary mass. Calus, collector of curiosities, wanted the intruder purged from his gut, so he set Guardians loose in his own digestion.

The whole lair is the Emperor's endless feast turned against him: Vex re-plumbed the ship's inner machinery, and you drop through its guts toward where the harvested mass is densest.

Argos is a Mind that made a core its body. It refracts damage through its conflux network, so you break it by presenting the exact energy it's cycling — then shatter the shell before the Mind reconstitutes.

Core Mechanic

The elemental matrix

The entire lair is one rule wearing three masks. Vex Craniums, barrier mines, and Argos's shield each come in Arc, Solar, or Void. You must apply the matching element — wrong element does nothing. Give each a fast callout name and stick to it.

Element · Cranium

Arc

› "Blue" — bolt
Charge the Arc-coloured cranium (blue lightning) into a laser and fire it at a matching Arc mine or shield. Nickname: Bolt.
Element · Cranium

Solar

› "Orange" — flame
Charge the Solar cranium (orange fire) into a laser and fire it at a matching Solar mine or shield. Nickname: Flame.
Element · Cranium

Void

› "Purple" — pull
Charge the Void cranium (purple) into a laser and fire it at a matching Void mine or shield. Nickname: Pull.
Reading the order: the lair shows you a required element sequence — which craniums to feed, in which order. Destiny's official Vex have their own UI tells; for fast comms, invent your own three-mark shorthand (the Bolt / Flame / Pull marks above are originals you can copy onto a whiteboard). One caller reads, the rest execute. See the barrier & Argos maps for the layout.
Mechanic Checkpoints

What moves the encounter

Eater is a compact raid-lair: get down safely, hold the wave-defence arena, defuse the barrier mines with charged craniums, then strip the boss shield in the right element order.

Low-man / speedrun read: the raid-lair is short, but element matching is non-negotiable. Low-man speed comes from pre-charging craniums, confirming element calls once, and having the same carrier rotate cleanly instead of wasting a shield window on the wrong color.

Descent

Progress: ride the coolant platforms down (one Guardian each), thread the shaft, and regroup at the wave-defence arena.

Fail/wipe: a second player on a platform sinks it, the retract timer wipes anyone still on one, and mistimed jumps are lethal.

Wave Defence

Progress: hold the arena against Cabal Loyalists until four Major Colossi spawn; kill all four to complete the encounter and open the reward chest.

Fail/wipe: heavy Cabal pressure and Colossus slug lines overwhelm a scattered team without cover and a healer.

Delve Deeper — the optional ring chest: after the Wave Defence chest you delve deeper into the Leviathan toward Argos. The lair's only secret chest waits on that descent — right before the boss a cannon launches the whole fireteam into the ship's open mouth, and gliding through all six rings on the way down (before anyone triggers Argos) spawns a loot chest at the bottom. Miss one? Wipe and retry; the attempt resets as long as the boss hasn't been pulled.

Break the Barrier

Progress: charge a Vex cranium at its matching Arc / Solar / Void brazier into a laser, then fire the matching colour to defuse each barrier mine in the order they appear.

Fail/wipe: only three mines spawn at a time and each has a very short fuse — a single detonation wipes the whole fireteam.

Argos Shield

Progress: use Arc, Solar, and Void craniums to remove the matching shield segments, damage Argos during Unstable Energy Boost, then break white body parts in the ring phase.

Fail/wipe: shooting the wrong element into a shield segment does nothing, and failing to break ring-phase body parts wipes the team.

Argos Core

Progress: once the shield drops, stack damage into Argos's body before the window ends.

Fail/wipe: scattered DPS wastes the shield-down window; add pressure between loops kills cranium users if nobody is assigned to clear.

Hidden Loot & Hard Traversal

Every jump section and the one secret chest

Eater of Worlds has no maze, but three traversal stretches decide how smooth a run feels, and one secret chest hides inside the last of them. The in-game section names are Embarkment, Reactor Room and Delve Deeper; the secret chest is a side objective at the bottom of Delve Deeper.

Embarkment · the rotating gear

Where: the opening of the lair, above the coolant. Reach: cross a giant rotating gear with precisely timed jumps. A fall drops you into the coolant below.

Route choice: none. Everyone crosses; wait for the gear, jump on the beat and do not rush ahead of the group.

Reactor Room · platform sequences

Where: past the boiler room, in the vast purple space. Reach: four platform sequences of rising and falling platforms. Only one player may stand on a platform or it sinks. Once four of you reach a checkpoint, the platforms stay up for good.

Route choice: the later sequences fork, so split into groups and take one fork each. After the platforms, the room ends in the Loyalist waves of Wave Defence.

Delve Deeper · gauntlet and fall

Where: after Wave Defence, on the way down toward Argos. Reach: a timed gauntlet where you move from safe spot to safe spot between the ship's strikes, then a spiral descent, and finally a cannon that fires the whole fireteam into the open mouth of the Leviathan for a long fall through ruins.

Route choice: everyone takes the gauntlet together. The fall is where the secret chest is won.

Secret chest · the six rings

Where: the fall at the end of Delve Deeper, just before the next encounter begins. Reach: pass through all six Vex rings scattered through the open area as you fall. Hit all six and a chest spawns on the platform below.

Route choice: the whole team does this, but nobody has to nail it in one go: die and respawn at the top to take any ring you missed. Once the next encounter starts there is no going back, so confirm the chest before you move on.

The Descent

"Drop into the Leviathan's gut and find the Vex incursion."
Lore lens · why it works

This is the Leviathan's inner machinery re-plumbed by the Vex. You drop through the ship's guts toward where the harvested planetary mass is densest — following Argos's incursion down to its source, deeper into the Emperor's digestion than any guest was meant to go.

The loop
  1. From the Leviathan's underbelly, drop into the shaft and ride the rising coolant platforms downward.
  2. Only one Guardian per platform — a second player turns it red and sinks it, killing whoever is on it. A timer retracts the platforms and wipes anyone still standing on them, so keep moving.
  3. Mind the occasional Cabal Loyalists (Psion snipers on the catwalks) that can knock you off ledges.
  4. Reach the arena where the wave-defence encounter begins. Regroup before pushing in.
FallsThis section ends more attempts than any enemy. Falls here kill you and send you to the last checkpoint — there is no soft up-shaft reset, and mistimed jumps (including the rotating gear) are lethal. Slow is smooth — land on flat geometry, don't chase kills mid-jump.
MobilityA high-mobility or extra-jump build (a movement subclass / traversal exotic) makes the descent trivial. Bring whatever extra-jump tool fits your class — the falling puzzle is the only real threat here.
SyncDon't sprint ahead solo. The lair gates progress on the team reaching the arena; a single runner just dies alone to a Psion sniper.
SectionsIn-game names, in order: Embarkment (the timed rotating gear), Reactor Room (one player per platform; the later sequences fork, so split into two groups), then the Loyalist waves. Full traversal and the ring chest.

Encounter · Hold the line

Wave Defence

"Hold the arena until the Colossi come."
Lore lens · why it works

Calus's Cabal Loyalists still hold this stretch of the gut — the Emperor's own troops, thrown at you in waves to slow your dive toward Argos. Holding the arena isn't just survival: you're carving through the Leviathan's garrison to reach the Vex Mind gorging deeper in the ship, where Calus wants the intruder purged.

The loop
  1. The arena floods with Cabal Loyalists in escalating waves — hold your ground and keep clearing.
  2. After the waves, four Major Colossi spawn. Killing all four completes the encounter.
  3. Completion opens a reward chest before you push on to the barrier.
SwarmThe Cabal pressure is heavy — Phalanxes shove you off ledges and Colossi slug lines chunk your health. Anchor a corner with cover and a healing source.
ChestKilling the four Major Colossi drops a reward chest — this is the lair's first loot stop, on the progression path, not an optional side room.
RolesBeginner split: two on adds, two on the Colossi as they arrive, and one floating to revive and hold cover. Focus the Colossi down together.
Secret chestThe lair's only secret chest is not here. It waits in the six-ring fall at the end of Delve Deeper: the ring chest.

Encounter · Defuse the mines

Break the Barrier

"Charge a cranium, fire the laser, defuse the mine."
Lore lens · why it works

A Vex Mind refracts damage through its conflux network, harmlessly redistributing anything that doesn't match. Charging a cranium and firing back the matching energy is you presenting the same power Argos is cycling — the only thing that collapses the barrier instead of being shrugged off.

The loop
  1. Three elemental braziers ring the room — one Arc, one Solar, one Void — with Vex craniums nearby.
  2. Carry a cranium to the matching-element brazier and hold it there to charge it to full — it becomes a trace-rifle laser of that element.
  3. Mines appear on the central barrier, only three at a time, each colour-coded. Fire the matching-colour laser to defuse each mine.
  4. Each mine has a very short fuse — a single detonation wipes the fireteam — so defuse them in the order they appear until the barrier drops and the path to Argos opens.
Mine wipeOnly three mines spawn at a time; each has a very short fuse and a single detonation wipes the whole fireteam. Defuse them in spawn order, matching laser colour to mine colour.
ChargeA cranium only becomes a laser after it fully charges at the matching brazier — Arc / Solar / Void. A mismatched brazier won't charge it.
RolesBeginner split: keep a carrier on each element cooking a cranium, and a caller reading mine colour + order so lasers fire in the right sequence.

Boss · Planetary Core

Argos, Planetary Core

"Strip the shield, damage Argos, then break the wipe parts."
Lore lens · why it works

Argos, Planetary Core is a Vex Mind that made a core its body — a shell it can reconstitute if you let it. Matching its cycled energy drops the shield; then you shatter that shell during the damage window, breaking the physical core before the Mind rebuilds itself from the network.

The loop — the matrix, weaponized
  1. Argos opens with a full elemental shield (Arc/Solar/Void segments). His body is immune to normal fire.
  2. Shoot matching elemental craniums around the arena to generate orbs and strip each shield segment by element.
  3. With the shield down, the team gains Unstable Energy Boost. Dump damage directly into Argos's body during the short window.
  4. After damage, rings/platforms appear. Break two white body parts (arms, armpits, or hump) before the wipe resolves — sustained damage turns each part red, then breaks it.
  5. If you don't finish, he re-shields and the cranium loop repeats. Survive the room-wide Vex pressure between phases.
  6. Repeat until Argos dies. Loot chest spawns on the kill.
Shield gateNo damage lands on Argos until the matching-element shield is removed. Mismatched fire is wasted — this is the whole fight. Coordinate which element the team strips first.
Add pressureVex flood the arena during the cranium phase. Keep an add-clear player free so the cranium shooters aren't getting collapsed on. Watch the floor for Vex hazards.
BurstThe shield-down window is short, so this is a burst fight: pre-stack a damage Super + Heavy and unload on call. A coordinated six can drop Argos in one or two damage windows.
RewardThe kill opened the lair's loot chest. The historical loot table is no longer live — the lair is vaulted; see the Loot section.

Loadouts

Loadout jobs (mid-2026)

Because the lair is vaulted, treat this as a how-you-would-build-it reference using today's sandbox vocabulary, not a live meta sheet. Build around one boss-DPS option + one add-clear + a survivable subclass. Argos cares about matching elements, so bring weapons across Arc, Solar, and Void rather than mono-element.

Boss DPS

For the exposed-core window
Heavy precision archetype
A Linear Fusion or Heavy sniper for the short core window — high burst from range, no reload chaos.
Rocket / rocket-sidearm archetype
Big up-front burst that fits a one-or-two-window kill. Pair a fireteam-buff rocket exotic if a teammate also runs rockets.
Elemental Special weapons ×3
Carry one Arc, one Solar, one Void Special so you always have the matching element to strip a shield segment.
Damage Super
A burst-damage Super (Hunter Golden Gun / Titan Thundercrash / Warlock Needlestorm-class) stacked for the core window.

Add Clear

Barrier & Argos arena
Chain / explosion primary
Anything that deletes Vex packs (a chaining-explosion Primary exotic) keeps the cranium shooters free.
Wave-clear Special
A Wave-frame GL or a fast Trace/Auto for the add waves that flood the wave-defence arena and boss phases.
Ability-spam subclass
Grenade/melee-loop builds clear the trash so plate runners can rotate without getting collapsed on.
Match elements when you can
Add-clear that doubles as shield-strip (right-element Special) saves swaps in the Argos fight.

Survivability

Descent & between phases
Extra-jump / mobility tool
A movement exotic or high-mobility subclass turns the falling-puzzle descent from a wipe risk into a formality.
Healing / restoration
A team heal (Well-of-Radiance-class / restoration loop) covers the cranium phase when Vex pressure spikes.
Debuff tool
A weaken/suppress debuff on the exposed core boosts the whole team's burst in the short window.
Warlock
Healing anchor

A Well-of-Radiance-style ground heal under the core gives survivability and a damage buff for the burst window. Safest team anchor; flexible Prismatic also works.

Titan
Burst / barrier

A burst Super (Thundercrash-class) on the core, or a barrier for the cranium phase. Prismatic gives healing and ad-clear aspects to taste.

Hunter
Burst + mobility

A single-shot nuke Super for the core, plus the best traversal kit for the descent. Invis aspects ease the add-heavy phases.

Vaulted-page note: Eater of Worlds is not currently launchable, so the picks above are archetype jobs mapped to the mid-2026 (Monument-era) sandbox — deliberately not god rolls, and never tested against a live checkpoint. If Bungie ever restores the lair, re-check the elemental shield segments against whatever you're carrying.
Rewards

What it dropped — and where it stands

The chase

Eater of Worlds had no raid exotic. It dropped Leviathan raid-lair Legendary gear (the Emperor Calus / underbelly armor and weapon set) and shared the Leviathan's prestige-loadout reward systems with the base raid and Spire of Stars.

That loot table is not live: the activity and its rewards were removed when the raid lair was vaulted. Do not chase any specific drop from old guides.

If it ever comes back

Bungie has reprised and refreshed older activities before. If Eater of Worlds is ever restored, assume its loot would be re-pointed at the current model — the tiered-weapon and armor-set-bonus systems that arrived with The Edge of Fate / Renegades (2025) and the Monument of Triumph reward refresh.

Until that happens, treat any loot, exotic, featured-week, or farm claim about this lair as historical only — it is not obtainable today.

Bottom line: this is a retrospective. The mechanics on this page are durable as motif history — element-matched craniums, a mine-defuse barrier, and a shield-gate boss are patterns Destiny reuses everywhere. The loot, access, and numbers are not current, and the lair is not launchable today.
