A banquet built to audition the end of the world

Destiny 2's first raid is a party the exiled Cabal Emperor throws for himself: a pleasure-barge of baths, gardens and gladiatorial games where every trial is a loyalty test dressed as a banquet. Read the Emperor's four signs, survive his court, and reach a throne where the god-king turns out to be a machine auditioning champions for the end of the universe.

Every plate, every symbol, every bath and beast is Calus asking the same question: are you worth feasting beside when everything else burns? The whole raid is one long invitation you have to earn by force — and the god at the end is a hologram over a room full of copies.

01 · The Setting

A palace of decadence built to test worth

The Leviathan is not a fortress to storm but a court to survive — a hub-and-spoke pleasure-barge where a fallen god-king turns his prison into a party and every luxury is a trial in disguise.

The Leviathan is the personal greatship of Emperor Calus, once ruler of the whole Cabal empire. Calus rose by overthrowing the war-hungry Praetorate and steered his people toward opulence and festivity instead of conquest — until his protégé Ghaul, the Consul, and Calus's own inner circle sealed him and his loyalists inside this vessel and launched it into deep space in the Midnight Coup. When the Red War ends with Ghaul's death, Calus turns his prison into a party barge and cordially invites the Guardians who killed his usurper aboard as honored guests.

Mechanically the palace is a hub-and-spoke court, not a descent. From the central Castellum you raise banners to open three trials — the Royal Pools, the Pleasure Gardens and the Gauntlet — in any order, then ascend to the throne. The whole raid speaks one language: a set of four arena symbols (in-game a cup, crossed axes, a war-beast paw and a sun) that recur as plates, standards, pedestals and grids. Learning to read that board is the raid, and it became the ancestor of every symbol-callout raid since.

Beneath the marble and gold, the court is a machine of decadence built to test worth. During his exile Calus drifted into a void where a whispering voice showed him the destruction of worlds and named him herald of the coming end. His baths, gardens and games are auditions: he is looking for warriors strong enough to feast beside him while everything else burns. This raid is vaulted — you cannot launch it today — so it reads now as history, the party that started the whole tradition.

Why the four signs? The cup, the axes, the war-beast paw and the sun aren't decoration — they are the Emperor's private glyph-language, the same board every plate, banner and grid speaks. To play his court you must learn to read it his way; the callout raid was born here.
Removed from the game: The Leviathan was vaulted on 10 November 2020 with the launch of Beyond Light and is not launchable today unless Bungie restores it. Everything below is history now — but the lore stands.
02 · The court and its god-king

Emperor Calus — and the family that cast him down

A fallen Emperor who traded conquest for feasting, the daughter who sat with his betrayers, and the champions he collects from every species to sit at his table.

Exiled Cabal god-king

Emperor Calus

The pleasure-obsessed former Emperor who traded conquest for feasting and was cast down by his own council. Now adrift, he believes a void-voice chose him as herald of the universe's end, and he invites Guardians aboard to audition them as his Shadows. He never fights in person — you battle a robotic proxy wearing his face while the true Calus watches and taunts.

Princess-Imperial, his daughter

Caiatl

Calus's daughter, who sat among the conspirators of the Midnight Coup rather than her father. When Calus fled to the Imperial Trinket that could have saved him, he found her already holding the Ahamkara bone — and she crushed it in her hand despite his pleas. Years later she inherits the Cabal empire and, in a separate arc, becomes an ally of the Vanguard.

His champion recruits

The Shadows of Calus

Calus collects powerful warriors from every species as his personal Shadows, dressing them in his opulent regalia. Beating the Leviathan is itself an audition: the Emperor offers the victorious fireteam the same forbidden power he found, urging them to "grow fat from strength" and join his court.

BuriedThe betrayal cuts to the bone: when Calus reached the one relic that might have spared him, it was his own daughter Caiatl who had it — and she crushed the wish-granting Ahamkara bone in her fist while he begged. The Emperor's endless party is the answer of a man his own family threw away.
03 · The story, encounter by encounter

What each room is really doing to you

Read as narrative, the mechanics stop being arbitrary. Every banner, bath, beast and grid is one course in the Emperor's banquet — a test of whether you deserve a seat at his table.

The Castellum

The Court's Front Door

You drop into the palace's transition hub and are made to prove you can follow the Emperor's etiquette. You cut down a Cabal Standard-Bearer, take its standard and plant it at a plate while Standard Liberators swarm in to steal it back and you defend the ground. Do it three times and Calus opens the door onward. This opening measure is the court's loyal Cabal enforcing his imperial ceremony — the first test of whether you can obey a court whose rules only he set.

The Royal Pools

Bathing in the Emperor's Favor

Calus stages cooperation in his indulgent baths, forcing warriors to share his luxury under threat. Standing on the plates grants Psionic Protection — a stack that counts down from x50 — letting you survive the room's psychic threat and harm the Bathers; let it run out off the plate and the court withdraws its blessing. Even his spa is a loyalty test — bask together or drown alone.

The Pleasure Gardens

A Hunt Staged for an Audience of One

The Gardens are a blood-sport laid on for the Emperor's amusement, his pampered Royal Beasts loosed as menagerie pets. Two players carry Prisms, shining beams of light onto glowing plants while the rest gather Royal Pollen to feed those plants and stack a damage buff (Empowering Spores) — all while retreating to a Safe Room when the beasts patrol close. Get spotted by a Royal Beast and it looses a howl that dooms the team, wiping the fireteam over roughly thirty seconds unless the marked player is saved. The whole encounter is theater performed for Calus watching from above.

The Gauntlet

The Games' Crowd-Pleaser

The Gauntlet turns light-orbs, plates and running lanes into a gladiatorial obstacle race, because Calus prizes coordination as spectacle. A runner sprints the track calling each grid's symbol and its red row while shooters open the path, threading psionic orbs under a detonation timer. It is the centerpiece of the Emperor's games — a team moving as one to please the crowd.

Emperor Calus

The Machine Wearing a God's Face

On the throne sits a colossal robotic Calus that fights through a psionic shadow-realm, splitting the fireteam between the throne room and a purple mindscape. Three pulled players call the symbols on the proxy's forehead so the throne team can kill the Councilor on the one symbol nobody named, opening the damage window. Break the shell and the truth spills out — countless duplicate bodies, the whole court a stage, the god-king an image built to audition champions. Then Calus's voice bids you "grow fat from strength" and names you his Shadow.

04 · Buried in the banquet

The lore hidden in the loot

The reveals the raid never says out loud live in boss dialogue, Grimoire, and the item text of the guns you carry out of the palace.

Calus's final offer
Boss dialogue
"Take them, and grow fat from strength. Emperor Calus has spoken."

Spoken after the robotic proxy falls, as the true Calus invites the fireteam to claim his treasures and share the forbidden power he found — nominating the victors as his Shadows of Calus.

Herald of the coming end
Grimoire / lore
"the nothingness dispersed, and a voice named him the herald of the coming end."

During exile the Leviathan drifted into a void where Calus glimpsed the destruction of worlds and was told he was chosen — the origin of his belief that decadence is the only rational response to an ending universe.

Midnight Coup
Legendary hand cannon
"They struck in the dead of night and sealed the Emperor into his own greatship."

The raid's signature Legendary hand cannon, named for the coup in which Ghaul, the Consul and Calus's inner council overthrew him and launched the Leviathan into deep space.

Legend of Acrius
Exotic shotgun (quest)
"A Cabal named Acrius reached for the sun, took it, and became the first Emperor."

An Exotic heavy shotgun tied to the Leviathan's release, its lore retelling a Cabal Icarus-myth of the first Emperor — earned via a quest chain rather than dropping from the raid boss itself.

05 · Where it sits in the saga

The party that seeded a decade of dread

The Leviathan sits early in the Light and Darkness Saga, immediately after the base-game Red War (2017). It is the story's decompression chamber: the immediate Cabal threat, Ghaul, is dead, and Calus arrives as a stranger flavor of Cabal — not a conqueror but a decadent god-king who claims a private relationship with the coming Darkness. At the time his end-of-the-universe talk read as villainous flavor.

In hindsight the raid seeds threads the saga spends years paying off. Calus's void-vision and his role as a self-styled herald of the end foreshadow his later, explicit turn toward the Witness and the Darkness; his daughter Caiatl grows from a coup conspirator into an inheritor of the empire and eventually a Vanguard ally; and the Shadows of Calus pipeline resurfaces in later seasons. The Leviathan itself returns transformed years later, haunted, as the stage for Season of the Haunted, when Calus reached through it for the Lunar Pyramid. He later dies beneath the Veil at Neomuna in Lightfall.

Structurally, this raid's four-symbol callout language is the saga's Rosetta Stone for endgame design. Every symbol raid that follows — Last Wish's plates, Vow of the Disciple's glyphs, on through the shape-callouts of Salvation's Edge — inherits the rhythm the Leviathan taught: read the board, name it, run it, swap before the timer.
