Nightmares

A full visual field guide to all four encounters of Lightfall's beam-and-node raid — with the Field of Light / Flux of Darkness node networks explained, the planets sorting diagrammed, current boss-DPS jobs, and the Conditional Finality chase. Root is the easiest raid to learn, so this guide teaches all six players a job — not just two runners carrying the team.

Read this first

Root has almost no fall-death platforming and an unusually forgiving DPS check — which is exactly why groups underestimate it. The whole raid is one idea remixed four times: grab a Field of Light or Flux of Darkness buff, then shoot nodes in the order a beam points you, connecting a network before a wipe timer runs out. Learn the buff-and-beam rule once and the raid is mostly map-reading.

The four stable truths

  • You carry a buff to the nodes — element doesn't matter. Stand in a glowing aura to pick up Field of Light or Flux of Darkness, then shoot a node while holding it. Any weapon works; what matters is which buff you hold, not your subclass.
  • An activated node beams to the next one. Shoot a node holding the buff and a beam points to the next node in the chain. Walk/shoot down the beam in sequence — the buff lasts ~15s, so move with purpose.
  • Cataclysm starts with a wipe timer ("Sweeping Terror"). It wipes the team at zero; killing Tormentors extends it and finishing a network pauses it. Later rooms change the timer name and survival answer, so read the encounter card before assuming the same clock. (In the Nezarec fight, a "Refuge" is a specific node you build, not a panic room — see that encounter.)
  • There is no real DPS wall. Nezarec dies in a couple of phases with any modern Heavy. Mechanics, not damage, is what wipes groups.

What wipes groups (and what stale guides get wrong)

Wipes mostly come from timed mechanics, not enemies. Letting Sweeping Terror or Imminent Expulsion resolve, losing your buff before you reach the next node, or shooting nodes out of beam order so the chain breaks — those end runs. Falling off does not; the arenas are flat.

What stale guides get wrong: Root launched in 2023 with a notoriously generous loot model, so old videos frame it around damage you no longer need to chase. The encounters are about beam order and the timer, not your gun.

Roles, not runners. Because Root is forgiving, lobbies love to let two strong players solo the mechanics. Don't. The fastest, most reliable clears split into a Light side and a Dark side (three players carrying Field of Light buffs, three carrying Flux of Darkness) and give every seat a node lane to connect. This guide assigns a beginner-safe job per encounter so nobody is a passenger.
The Fiction

Why you're here

The node networks below aren't decoration — they're the plumbing the Witness is using to grow a dead god back to life. Here's the story the raid is telling while you sever it.

The tree of nightmares aboard the Essence

The Neomuna Vanguard tracked the Pyramid ship Essence to the Witness's Black Fleet in Earth's orbit, and inside it the Witness has resurrected Nezarec, the Final God of Pain — an ancient Disciple whose severed head Calus once carried, now wired into a Darkness-fed tree of nightmares.

Every conduit you connect is the ship's own resurrection plumbing, pairing Light and Dark to keep the god "balanced" the way the Witness keeps him leashed. Feed it wrong and it inflicts Terror — Nezarec's signature fear made physical.

Climb the Essence, sever its Light/Dark network, and put the God of Pain back in the ground before he draws a full breath.

Core Mechanic

The node network

Three ideas carry the raid: the Field of Light buff and its Light nodes, the Flux of Darkness buff and its Dark nodes, and the room-specific wipe pressure those networks hold back. Grab a buff, follow the beam node-to-node, finish the network. Memorize the node language, then read each room's timer by name.

Network · Half the team

Light Node

› Hold Field of Light
Stand in the glowing aura to grab the Field of Light buff (~15s), then shoot the node with any weapon. A beam fires toward the next Light node — follow it and shoot that one before the buff expires. Flux of Darkness can't light a Light node.
Network · Other half

Dark Node

› Hold Flux of Darkness
Same idea, opposite side: grab the Flux of Darkness buff from its aura and shoot Dark nodes (again, any weapon). The Dark chain runs parallel to the Light chain — both networks must complete to grow the platform or unlock the next step.
Survival · Everyone

Wipe Pressure

› Beat the clock
Sweeping Terror is Cataclysm's clock; Imminent Expulsion is Scission's. Later rooms ask for planet alignment or a built Refuge. The lesson is the same: clear adds, finish node work fast, and answer the room's named wipe mechanic.
Callout language: name your nodes by position, not by colour alone, because both colours appear in the same room. "Light, far-left, go" beats "shoot the green one." Pick Light side / Dark side teams before you start and keep each player on the same side (and buff) all encounter. (See the overview route and the per-encounter maps.)
Mechanic Checkpoints

What moves the encounter

Root is easy to carry badly, so this section names the actual advancement rules. Runners move the raid, but the whole team prevents the wipe timer and refuge failures.

Low-man / speedrun read: Root already looks like a low-man raid because runners move most rooms, but supports still buy the clock. Clean node chains, Tormentor kills, planet confirms, and correct refuge beat any "just run faster" plan.

Cataclysm

Progress: Light and Dark runners chain the correct nodes in order; completing both networks grows the path to the next section.

Fail/wipe: Sweeping Terror reaches zero if chains stall. Kill Tormentors to buy time, then restart broken chains cleanly.

Scission

Progress: both sides ride launchers and connect their Light/Dark seed networks level by level until the top opens.

Fail/wipe: one side outpacing the other stalls the room, and Imminent Expulsion wipes if teams linger on pads or lose the buff.

Macrocosm

Progress: Planetary Insight holders call the odd planets, paired platforms swap them, then the team damages from the plate matching Zo'Aurc's aura.

Fail/wipe: finalizing mismatched planets causes the collision wipe. Only Insight holders know the truth; everyone else waits for the call.

Nezarec

Progress: finish both node networks and build the correct refuge from his shoulder color; completing both networks fires the beam that blasts Nezarec and opens the damage window automatically. Shooting his weak points is a roaming-stun tool along the way, not a gate on the beam.

Fail/wipe: wrong refuge, slow networks, or letting Nezarec's Hatred run loose kills players before DPS. Shoulder read first, damage second.

Hidden Loot

Every secret chest and hard traversal

Root hides two physical chests in the jumping stretches and a Deepsight chest tied to three seed rooms. Every one is a detour from the main climb, so assign the peelers before the group commits.

1 · White-tendril climb chest

Where: the jumping section after Cataclysm, on the way up to Scission. Reach: as you climb the white tendril platforms, look up and to the right for a small alcove, a square opening high in the wall. It leads into a hallway with a Tormentor and Shadow Legion inside; clear them and the chest waits in front of a Winnower statue at the end.

Route choice: the alcove is off the main climb and the room needs clearing, so send the whole team together.

2 · Nuclear puzzle chest

Where: the jumping puzzle between Scission and Macrocosm. Reach: after the door opens onto a staircase, climb up and move slightly right. Look over the edge for a Darkness Crux below and shoot it: a hidden temple room opens behind you with the chest between a Light plate and a Dark plate.

Route choice: one player peels to shoot the Crux while the rest keep the Darkness Refuge up. Finding both secret chests completes the Triumph for the Oxidized Lead shader.

3 · Deepsight chest, three seed rooms

Where: spawns beside the final chest after Nezarec, with one guaranteed Deepsight weapon. Reach: before Cataclysm, memorize the three Light and Dark nodes on the flower display behind a structure on the left. Then enter three hidden rooms and recreate the pattern: stand in the matching aura, shoot the first node, step into the second node and shoot it. "Your actions take root…" confirms; a failure message means only a raid reset fixes it. "A great harvest awaits…" confirms all three.

Room 1: before Cataclysm, bear right away from the bright doorway, through a door behind branches, down the large staircase. Room 2: in the nuclear puzzle, skip the piston roof and jump left to the lower building's door, the isolated floating pyramid. Room 3: right before Nezarec, the cube-like structure pierced by three branches and gold blocks, entered through the roof.

Route choices at a glance

Chest 1 and Room 1 are off the main path early, so decide the Deepsight plan before the first node.

Chest 2 and Room 2 are in the same puzzle: the Refuge holders keep the team alive while the peelers work.

Room 3 sits just ahead of Nezarec, so the seed player has to leave the final approach before the boss arena.

RouteWhite-tendril climb. After Cataclysm you climb the white tendril platforms, with Psion snipers at three sniper points. Clear them, then keep climbing toward Scission; the square wall opening is the chest 1 detour.
RouteNuclear jumping puzzle. A lengthy but straightforward puzzle between Scission and Macrocosm while Nezarec's nukes go off. Grab Field of Light and use the Refuge of Darkness plates for cover.
FallsMissing the Refuge is what kills. The Darkness Refuge buff is what shields you from the nuclear blasts, so keep it running for everyone and let the Crux shooter peel only while the others hold it.
RouteFinal traversal. Before Nezarec you link Light and Dark plates to a central disc to open the jumping area, then follow the bottom ribbon route in toward the arena.

The Raid

Four encounters, beam to boss

Every fight starts with the same verb — carry a buff and chain Light and chain Dark nodes — then adds its own wipe answer. Lock in your Light side / Dark side teams now and keep them all run.

1
Encounter · The Essence

Cataclysm

"Build the path forward by carrying Light and Dark."
Lore lens · why it works

The paired Light and Dark nodes are the same conduits that grow Nezarec — you're weaponizing the ship's own resurrection plumbing. Cataclysm forces the Essence's bulkheads open, and they yield only to symmetric paracausal supply, mirroring how the Witness keeps its Disciple perfectly "balanced" and under control.

The loop
  1. Split 3 Light / 3 Dark. Each side grabs its buff (Field of Light / Flux of Darkness) from the starting aura and shoots the first node in its network.
  2. Each lit node beams to the next — follow the beam and shoot nodes in order, handing off as buffs expire so adjacent players run it like a relay. Dark mirrors Light on the opposite side.
  3. Completing both networks grows the platform/path further out and reveals the next set of nodes. Push through all four networks.
  4. Finish every network to open the way to the Conduit. Kill Tormentors to keep Sweeping Terror topped up the whole time.
Beginner-safe roles
Light lane · 3 playersCarry Field of Light. Stand staggered along the Light nodes; shoot yours the instant the beam from the player before you points at it.
Dark lane · 3 playersCarry Flux of Darkness. Mirror the Light side's timing — both networks finish together.
Timer callerOne person watches Sweeping Terror and calls priority Tormentor kills before it spikes. No one out-runs the chain alone.
Add controlTormentors and Psions harass the lanes — kill Tormentors for timer, suppress Psions so a beam-handoff doesn't stall.
TimerSweeping Terror counts down and wipes if you stall. Kill Tormentors to extend it; if your chain breaks, regrab the buff and restart that network cleanly rather than forcing a dead sequence.
Wrong buffShooting a node without the matching buff (or the wrong-colour node) does nothing and wastes time. Confirm you're holding the right buff before you fire — both colours sit close together.
TempoThis is a rhythm encounter. Follow the beam and practice the handoff cadence — "1...2...3" down the line — so chains never die between players.
ChestHidden chest 1 sits on the white-tendril climb up to Scission, after Cataclysm — sweep for it on the way to the second encounter.

Encounter · The Conduit

Scission

"Climb the conduit by connecting seed networks — there is no boss here."
Lore lens · why it works

Scission is you climbing the ship's twin conduits toward Nezarec. Connecting the Light and Dark seed networks pries open each floor because the Essence only opens to balanced paracausal current — the same symmetric Light/Dark supply the Witness uses to grow its Disciple without letting his pain slip its leash.

Scission has no boss fight — it's a pure node-network climb. (Zo'Aurc is fought in the next encounter, Macrocosm.) Complete it by growing both seed networks to the top.
The loop
  1. The room climbs across three floor levels. Two teams take the left (Light) and right (Dark) sides, grab their buffs and ride launchers up to the node banks.
  2. Each side connects its seed network — grab the buff, shoot a node, follow the beam to the next — growing the platform up one level. Both sides must climb in step.
  3. As you climb, manage waves of Cabal, including aura-holding "Redolence" units and a Barrier Colossus. Keep connecting nodes through all three levels.
  4. Finish both networks at the top to open the path onward. If your team wants hidden chest 2, take that optional detour in the jumping-puzzle stretch after the encounter is complete.
Beginner-safe roles
Left side · Light trioCarry Field of Light, ride launchers, connect nodes level by level. Call your level ("Light on 2") so both sides sync.
Right side · Dark trioMirror on the Dark side with Flux of Darkness. The two networks must reach each level together.
Launcher disciplineDon't over-shoot a pad — landing on the wrong level breaks the relay. Slow is smooth.
Add watchOne caller tracks the Cabal waves and the Barrier Colossus so the chaining players aren't ambushed mid-launch.
SyncIf one side climbs faster than the other, progress stalls until they match. Communicate level numbers constantly.
TimerImminent Expulsion is the climb's wipe timer. Connecting nodes promptly is what buys time — dawdling on a pad is how this room wipes.
ChestHidden chest 2 sits in the jumping-puzzle stretch between Scission and the planets room — sweep for it before moving on. (Finding both hidden chests unlocks the Oxidized Lead shader Triumph.)

Boss · The Macrocosm

Macrocosm · Zo'Aurc

"Sort the planets to match, then break Zo'Aurc's shield and damage him."
Lore lens · why it works

Zo'Aurc is a Shadow Legion Cabal commander curating a captive planetarium for the Witness — a hoarded catalog of worlds. Sorting the planets by true light-level is you correcting his miscatalogued collection; only when the exhibit reads correctly does the curator drop his shield and become mortal.

The loop
  1. The room is a model solar system with four triangular platforms of planets. Kill the Terrestrial Lieutenant on a platform — the player with the final blow gets Planetary Insight, which reveals each planet's true colour on that side.
  2. Each left triangle should hold two Light + one Dark; each right triangle two Dark + one Light. The insight holder calls the mismatched planet, then interacts with the orb beneath it and with the matching mismatched planet across the room to swap them. Lower platforms pair up; upper platforms pair up.
  3. If both indexed sides match, the damage phase opens. If they don't match, a planetary collision wipes the team — confirm before you finalise.
  4. To damage Zo'Aurc, read his aura and stand on the matching plate (Light plate gives Field of Light, Dark plate gives Flux of Darkness). Dump damage, then repeat until he dies and the way to Nezarec opens.
Beginner-safe roles
Insight holders ×2/sideGet the final blow on the Lieutenant to earn Planetary Insight, then read your triangle's true colours and call the mismatched planet.
Platform pairsLower-left ↔ lower-right and upper-left ↔ upper-right coordinate. Swap via the orb beneath the mismatched planet.
Match-check callerBefore finalising, confirm both indexed sides match — a mismatch is a planetary-collision wipe, not a soft reset.
Plate / DPSRead Zo'Aurc's aura, stand on the matching plate for the buff, and call the team onto damage.
Collision = wipeIf the two indexed sides don't match when you finalise, a planetary collision wipes the team. Always confirm both paired platforms agree before committing the swap.
Insight onlyOnly the Planetary Insight holder sees true colours — everyone else is guessing. Get the Lieutenant final blow and call clearly from insight, not from raw planet colour.
CommsThis is the most callout-dependent encounter. Short, positional names ("lower-left, swap the Dark") keep six people from talking over each other.

Nezarec, Final God of Pain

"Connect the networks, read his shoulder, build the Refuge, and dump everything in the window."
Lore lens · why it works

Nezarec is rooted to the tree and can only be harmed while you keep refreshing the Light/Dark field — cut the supply and his fear-aura (the Refuge you build shelters you from it) locks the fireteam out. Every damage window is you holding the God of Pain in the balance the Witness engineered, just long enough to end him.

The loop — the whole raid, at once
  1. Two sides again: Light nodes on the left, Dark nodes on the right. Each team grabs its buff and connects its network the same way you have all raid.
  2. Read Nezarec's shoulder burst. To build the Refuge you must carry the opposite buff to a node: if his shoulder is Dark, take Field of Light to a Dark node; if Light, take Flux of Darkness to a Light node. Stand in the Refuge to get its buff.
  3. With both networks done, group on the platform, and once the beam blasts Nezarec the damage phase opens automatically. Stack Heavy and a debuff, then unload. (Shooting his weak points is a roaming-stun / attack-interrupt tool during setup — it doesn't gate the beam.)
  4. Manage Nezarec's Hatred by keeping his attention controlled, and build refuge from Overwhelming Light or Overwhelming Darkness when his wipe pulse is coming. After damage, reset and repeat; later rounds give you a tighter window, so build faster.
  5. He goes down in two or three phases with modern Heavy — the fight is a mechanics check, not a DPS wall.
Beginner-safe roles
Light node team ×3Connect the left (Light) network, then swap to your DPS Heavy when the window opens. Call "Light network up."
Dark node team ×3Mirror on the right (Dark) network. Both must finish to set up the Refuge — don't start DPS early.
Shoulder callerOne caller names Nezarec's shoulder-burst colour so carriers bring the opposite buff to build the Refuge.
Hatred holderOne player keeps Nezarec's Hatred pointed safely while runners finish networks and refuge setup.
HatredNezarec's Hatred is a targeted pressure mechanic, not a floor field. Assign a holder, keep him controlled, and do not let runners eat surprise slams while carrying buffs.
Opposite buffThe Refuge is built by carrying the buff opposite to his shoulder colour to a node. Bring the wrong buff and the Refuge won't form — read the shoulder before you grab.
DPSNo real damage gate — a coordinated team with stacked Heavy + a debuff phases him fast. Mechanics first, damage second.
RewardFinal chest drops raid gear and is the Conditional Finality chase — the exotic shotgun drops from Nezarec's chest.

Loadouts

Meta loadouts (mid-2026)

Important: in Root, nodes are triggered by the Field of Light / Flux of Darkness buff you carry — not by your weapon or subclass element. So there is no "bring Arc for Light nodes" rule. Build instead for what actually matters here: add-clear to feed the timer, Heavy for Nezarec, and survivability for Hatred control and refuge setup. Think in archetype jobs, not exact god rolls.

Boss DPS

For Nezarec's window
Heavy rocket (Bait-and-Switch)
A high-end rocket launcher in a swap rotation is the most forgiving big-damage job — bring whatever modern Heavy rocket you have rolled.
Linear Fusion / Heavy precision
LFRs and Heavy snipers do clean stationary DPS into a near-immobile boss — great when you want range and safety.
Sniper / Golden-Gun exotic Exotic
Burst nukes (e.g. a precision Heavy sniper, or Hunter's Golden-Gun synergy) chunk the bar in the short window. Pick what you own.
Gjallarhorn Exotic
Buffs every rocket in the fireteam — value scales if your team runs a rocket phase.

Add Clear

Keep lanes/chains clean
Chain-explosion primary Exotic
Sunshot / Graviton-style primaries clear the Cabal, Psions and Tormentors off the node lanes so chains never stall.
Anti-Tormentor / sustained DPS
In Cataclysm, killing Tormentors extends Sweeping Terror — a weapon that bursts their weak points buys you clock, not just kills.
Wave-frame GL / Trace rifle
Cheap sustained clear for the trash that swarms the planets and conduit rooms.
Witherhoard Exotic
Passive area damage to soften packs and tick the boss while you reload your Heavy.

Survivability

Beat the timer / Hatred pressure
Healing Super (Well / Song)
A team healing pool stabilizes Nezarec DPS and gives runners room to recover after Hatred pressure — the single highest-value pick.
Debuff tool Exotic
Tractor Cannon / Div-style debuff stacks team damage so Nezarec phases faster and the window is safer.
Restoration / woven mail / invis
Any sustained survivability aspect keeps node-runners alive while the wipe timer ticks and adds pile up.
Warlock
Well of Radiance

Well anchors Nezarec DPS and stabilizes Hatred pressure — the single most valuable seat. Your subclass element doesn't affect nodes, so pick for healing and add-clear.

Titan
Thundercrash / Banner of War

Thundercrash is a big burst on Nezarec; Banner of War or a barricade keeps a node trio alive. Any subclass works — nodes don't care about your element.

Hunter
Golden Gun / Tether

Golden Gun (with the right exotic) is a strong single-target nuke; Tether is a free team debuff for the DPS window. Run whatever subclass you clear adds best with.

Loadout note: these are archetype jobs for the Monument-era (mid-2026) sandbox, not locked god rolls. Because Root has no hard DPS wall — and because node elements don't matter — the gap between "meta" and "what you already have" barely matters here. Bring guns you clear adds and burst bosses with and you are set.
Rewards

What you're farming for

Conditional Finality

Root's headline chase is Conditional Finality, the raid Exotic Shotgun that fires a Stasis barrel and a Solar barrel at once — the only weapon that applies freeze and ignite from one pull. It's the standout reason to farm Nezarec.

Drop rulesThe exotic is a chance drop from the final encounter.

Raid weapons & armor

Each encounter drops from the Root weapon set plus the raid armor; Root historically had a generous, craftable loot model with red-border/Deepsight patterns.

Featured rewardsTwo raids are featured each week. Featured: Standard encounters and challenges drop Deepsight weapons or Tier 5 armor, hidden chests drop Tier 5 armor on a weekly lockout, and Master adds Adept weapons from challenges. Not featured: Standard gives a chance at Deepsight weapons and Tier 3 armor; Master and challenges still give Deepsight weapons and Tier 5 armor. Feats raise the reward grade (Grade 0: Tier 3; 1: Tier 3+4; 2: Tier 4+5; 3: two Tier 5; 4: Tier 4 + two Tier 5; 5: three Tier 5; Cutthroat Combatants +4, Challenges +3, Shocktroopers +2, Token Limit and Phase Limit +1). Standard mode earns the weekly tiered reward without Feats.

Don't trust 2023 loot videos at face value. Root launched with one of Destiny's most generous loot economies, and several reward models have come and gone since — it now uses the current tiered-loot and featured-raid model like every other raid.
