Stars

A retrospective field guide to the Warmind-era raid lair where six Guardians stormed Calus's barge to stop the Red Legion. Statue Garden orb relays, ship-symbol reads, fleet targeting, and a final boss who punishes every dropped pass. This page is history — Spire was vaulted with Beyond Light and is not launchable today unless Bungie restores it.

Spire of Stars was the second and final Leviathan raid lair, released with Warmind in May 2018. It earned a reputation as a coordination wall — short on encounters, long on simultaneous jobs. Here's the honest framing before the walkthrough.

Status, checked 2026-09-25: on 2026-09-21 Bungie announced it is working to bring vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids back into Destiny 2, with details “in the coming months” and no dates. Nothing has been restored yet, so Spire of Stars still can't be launched and this page stays a retrospective until it returns. Bungie — The Next Chapter

It is not currently launchable

Spire of Stars was vaulted alongside the rest of the original Leviathan content with Beyond Light (November 2020). Like Leviathan, Eater of Worlds, Scourge of the Past, and Crown of Sorrow, it sits in the Content Vault. You cannot start it from the Director today unless Bungie restores it.

So treat this page as retrospective history and motif reference, not a live checklist. The mechanics still matter — they're the ancestors of ball-relay and symbol-door designs that later raids reused.

Stable truths about the lair

  • Six players, three encounters. Arrival, the ball-relay symbol gauntlet, then Val Ca'uor — short list, heavy execution.
  • It is a relay raid. Almost everything is "pick up a ball, throw it to the right person, hit the right plate or door in sync."
  • Greed cleanup. Carrying or charging too long applies the stacking Greed debuff that eventually kills you. Bank or hand off before it caps.
  • Callouts win it. Symbol doors and ship targeting demand fast, agreed-upon names. Comms discipline beat raw DPS here.
  • The boss is the exam. Val Ca'uor combines balls, symbols, ship targeting, and DPS in one timed loop.
What wipes most groups: dropped or mistimed ball passes, and people holding the ball / standing on a charge too long and dying to the stacking debuff. Spire punishes hesitation more than aim.
What stale guides get wrong: old videos quote a Prestige mode, specific power requirements, and a then-current loot table. All of that is frozen at the 2018–2020 sunset state — the lair is vaulted and not launchable. The mechanics below are durable; the reward, power, and Prestige numbers are history, not current advice.
The Fiction

Why you're here

The ball-and-symbol relay below is a Cabal firing sequence — and you're either completing it or spoofing it. Here's the story the lair is telling while you run it.

The lair atop the Leviathan

Calus's Leviathan hangs in Nessus orbit, and Red Legion commander Val Ca'uor leads a fleet to storm the ship, kill Calus, and seize the world-eating barge to finish Ghaul's work. At Calus's invitation, you fight up through the Statue Garden to repel the assault.

The lair is a psion-linked command-shrine dressed in Calus's imperial iconography — the ball-and-symbol relay is a Cabal firing sequence you carry through his own signs. This is a vaulted raid lair, unplayable today, and the direct ancestor of every modern relay-and-ball mechanic.

Repel the boarding fleet and destroy Val Ca'uor before he can seize the Leviathan for the Red Legion.

Core Mechanic

The relay triad

Three repeating verbs power the whole lair. Spire never asks one player to do everything — it asks the team to do three jobs at the same time. Learn these and every encounter is a remix of them.

Verb · Carry

The Ball

› Pick up & throw
A glowing orb you grab and lob to a teammate or a target. Holding it builds Greed — a stacking debuff. Pass or bank before it caps, then immediately get a fresh one.
Verb · Read

The Symbol

› Match & call
Doors and stations show a marked symbol. One player reads it and calls a nickname; the team routes the ball or fire to the matching spot. Agreed names beat the real glyphs.
Verb · Sync

The Timer

› Throw together
Many steps need simultaneous throws or hits on a shared count. Carrying or charging too long builds Greed; whoever holds Superior Retainer can carry longer. Count down, then go on the same beat.
On the symbols: Spire used its own door/standard symbol set in 2018. This guide does not reproduce those exact glyphs — invent your own mnemonic marks (see the field maps for art-safe examples) and assign short callout names with your team before you start. The official set existed; you don't need to copy it to play, and you certainly don't need to copy it to read this page.
Mechanic Checkpoints

What moves the encounter

Spire stacks carry, read, pass, and simultaneous timing. If a ball is in play, someone should be saying where it goes and who receives it next.

Low-man / speedrun read: the ball economy is the low-man wall. Greed, Superior Retainer, ship targeting, and simultaneous throws need explicit handoff routes; an early conservative pass is faster than a capped carrier dying with the ball.

Statue Garden

Progress: charge the orb, then relay it so each player raises their pillar by catching it (a pillar-stander without the orb gets the lethal Engulfed timer); once all four are raised, throw the empowered orb at the central dome.

Fail/wipe: Greed kills a holder who hoards the orb, an uncaught Engulfed timer kills a pillar-stander, and a missed handoff leaves the dome shield intact.

Repel the Assault

Progress: Superior Retainer reads the ship symbols in the virtual realm while the team arms matching sockets to destroy three Cabal ships.

Fail/wipe: wrong ship calls, missed socket throws, or capped Greed let the fleet fire its wipe barrage.

Val Ca'uor

Progress: read live symbols, relay balls to launcher plates, target the ships, break Val Ca'uor's protection, and damage in the Celestial Observatory window.

Fail/wipe: if targeted dropships fire because a ball delivery missed, the fleet barrage wipes the team.

Greed Rule

Progress: rotate ball carriers and let Superior Retainer handle long carries so the relay never stops moving.

Fail/wipe: hoarding a ball to max Greed kills the carrier. Pass early; a living relay is faster than a heroic death.

Hidden Loot & Hard Traversal

The Power Conduit and its two secret chests

Between the Statue Garden and the Celestial Observatory sits the Power Conduit, a platforming section under the garden full of turbines and spinning fan blades. It is the raid's one hard traversal stretch, and both secret chests sit inside it. A grav lift at the far end carries you up to the Observatory.

Power Conduit · the intended route

Where: the turbine and fan area beneath the Statue Garden. Reach: three checkpoints, each a switch room. Activate the switch to set the fan blades, cross them, and carry the Greed ball across the jumps and into the sockets as you go. The last room is a bridge switch room.

Route choice: the main route is the same for everyone. The ball stacks Greed on whoever holds it, so hand it off before the stack builds rather than letting one player carry it the whole way.

1 · Final-room chest

Where: the last room of the Power Conduit, at the end of the fan run. Reach: take the ball you have carried to the end and throw it into the socket on the wall. The room beside it opens and holds the chest.

Route choice: no one leaves the route. Someone just has to arrive at the last room with a ball and call the throw.

2 · Off-path chest, third checkpoint

Where: the third checkpoint of the fan blades. Reach: look above the third ball dropper and the switch terminal for a window and a secret path. Climb out, cross the blades to the engine unit at the back of the turbine, and the chest is waiting on a stationary blade.

Route choice: this is a side trip. Send one player while the rest hold the checkpoint switch.

The Assault

Three encounters, bottom to top

Unlike the Hellmouth dungeons, Spire is a climb. You fight up Calus's barge toward the Celestial Observatory where Val Ca'uor commands the fleet. Three encounters, each a heavier remix of the relay triad.

1
Encounter · Statue Garden

The Statue Garden

"Charge the orb, bless the pillars, and crack the dome."
Lore lens · why it works

You bank the charged orb into statues bearing the correct glyphs — the shrine recognizes only Calus's own iconography. Carrying his charge slowly corrupts you (the stacking Greed debuff), so you bank or hand off and never covet it; a very Calus lesson dressed as a puzzle.

The loop
  1. Pick up the orb and charge it by throwing it through the active fire / relay point, starting the holder's Greed stack.
  2. Relay the charged orb across the four garden pillars. A player who stands on a pillar without the orb gets the lethal Engulfed timer and must catch the orb within ~15s or die — so each pillar player catches the orb (clearing Engulfed), raises their pillar, then passes before Greed caps.
  3. Once all four pillars are raised, throw the empowered orb at the central dome to lower its shield.
  4. Repeat the relay until the dome is broken and the route into the Power Conduit traversal opens.
GreedHolding the orb stacks Greed. Pass early and call "catch" before every throw. A dead holder drops the entire relay.
EngulfedA player standing on a pillar without the orb gets the lethal Engulfed timer — catch the orb within ~15s or die. Raise all four pillars (stand with the orb) to drop the dome; throwing early just wastes the charge.
RolesBeginner split: four fixed pillar catchers, one orb caller, and one add-clear floater. Fixed positions make the pass route automatic.
Next upAfter the garden comes the Power Conduit: three fan-blade checkpoints and two secret chests. Plan who fetches the off-path chest before you drop in. Traversal and chests.

Catching the orb clears Engulfed and raises that pillar; raising all four lowers the central dome's shield. Holding the orb too long stacks Greed and kills the carrier, so the relay uses fixed catch points and early passes. central dome throw empowered orb Pillar 1raise pillar Pillar 2raise pillar Pillar 3raise pillar Pillar 4raise pillar charge orb ⚠ no orb on a pillar = lethal Engulfed (~15s) · raise all four pillars before the dome throw

Repel the Assault

"Read the fleet, arm the sockets, and destroy the ships."
Lore lens · why it works

Ca'uor's fleet is boarding — the escalating relay tempo is a live defense against his landing craft. Carrying the charge to the matching symbol before the timer completes the Cabal's firing sequence against the ships; hesitate and the assault lands. It's a battle of the psion-shrine's clock against the fleet's.

The loop
  1. Clear the Observatory and earn Superior Retainer; that player enters the virtual realm and reads which Cabal ship symbols are live.
  2. The reader calls the ship targets. Outside, runners pick up charged balls and throw them to the matching sockets / launchers.
  3. Arm the correct sockets and fire them to destroy three Cabal ships before the fleet completes its barrage.
  4. Rotate ball carriers before Greed caps. Long carries go to the Superior Retainer player if the route demands it.
  5. After the third ship is destroyed, the team advances into the Val Ca'uor boss loop in the same Celestial Observatory space.
GreedHolding a ball stacks Greed. Let it cap and you take escalating damage and die. Pass or deliver before the meter fills — then grab a fresh ball, don't sit empty.
ShipsA wrong ship call or missed socket throw lets the fleet fire. Confirm ship symbol first, then socket position, then throw on count.
RolesAssign a Superior Retainer reader, 2-3 ball throwers, and fixed socket defenders. Fixed positions make ship calls automatic.
CalloutsNickname every ship symbol before you start. Call ship symbol before socket when time-critical: "triangle ship, left socket!"

Boss · Celestial Observatory

Val Ca'uor

"Stop the Red Legion's last commander — everything, at once."
Lore lens · why it works

Val Ca'uor fights from a shielded command platform fed by his fleet. Relaying charges up to the sockets spoofs his control-network and drops the shield — you're hijacking the Cabal firing system to turn the commander's own fleet-link against him before he can seize the Leviathan.

The loop — the relay triad on a clock
  1. The fight is split across tiers / sides of the Celestial Observatory. Pre-assign who covers each side and who runs balls.
  2. Ship targeting: Cabal dropships line up to fire on the spire. Players relay balls to the correct launchers / plates to shoot the incoming ships before they wipe you.
  3. Symbol gate: the deck shows symbols that tell you which targets or plates are live this round. Reader calls them; team responds.
  4. Deliver the synced throws to break Val Ca'uor's protection and open the damage window.
  5. DPS Val Ca'uor hard during the window. He shrugs off chip damage between windows, so commit when it's open.
  6. Survive his slam / fleet barrage, reset the relay, and repeat the loop until he falls.
Ship wipeIf the targeted dropships fire because you missed a ball delivery, expect a team-wipe barrage. Ship targeting is not optional — it's the survival clock.
GreedCharging plates / holding balls too long stacks Greed. Rotate carriers, lean on Superior Retainer, and never let one player babysit a charge to death.
OrderBeginner-safe split: two ball-runners, two on ship targeting / plates, one reader-caller, one add-clear / revive. Lock the loop before chasing DPS — Val Ca'uor is an execution boss, not a DPS race.
Final examThis encounter is every earlier mechanic stacked: carry, read, sync, target, DPS. If the relay encounter felt clean, this is just that — under a fleet barrage and a clock.

Loadouts

Archetype jobs (mid-2026 frame)

Spire is vaulted, so there is no live sandbox to optimize against — these are archetype jobs, framed for how the encounters work rather than a 2018 god-roll list. Think in roles: open the damage window, keep the deck clear, stay alive through the relay. Build one DPS option + one add-clear + a survivable subclass.

Boss DPS

For Val Ca'uor's window
Heavy precision DPS
A Linear Fusion or Heavy sniper archetype — accurate burst into the boss's open window from a safe lane.
Burst rocket archetype
Bait-and-Switch / high-burst rockets are the classic raid-window pick when the team can stack a coordinated dump.
Damage Super
A burst Super (shoulder-charge / arrow / chained Golden Gun job) lands a big chunk the instant the window opens.

Add Clear

Cabal waves & deck control
Chain-explosion primary
An ad-clear primary that detonates packs deletes the Legionary / Psion swarms between relay legs.
Wave-frame / GL add-clear
Anything that clears a lane fast keeps ball-runners safe and stops the deck from filling up.
Anti-major special
A special-weapon job that chunks Centurions / Colossus so majors don't gate the wave.

Survivability

Live through the relay
Team healing source
A healing Super or class ability keeps carriers alive while Greed ticks and the fleet barrages.
Debuff / boss-weaken
A team-wide weaken job multiplies the short damage window — bring one if your DPS feels short.
Mobility / edge safety
Anything that softens a missed jump; the barge has lethal edges from arrival onward.
Warlock
Healing anchor

A healing-rift / Well-style anchor is the safest team support through the relay — survivability and a damage buff in one footprint.

Titan
Burst Super / barricade

A burst Super lands a big DPS chunk; a barricade gives ball-runners cover on exposed deck lanes.

Hunter
Invis / burst DPS

Invisibility carries the reader and ball-runners through hot spots; a burst Super doubles as a damage-window nuke.

Loadout note: these are archetype job descriptions, not a tier list — and because Spire of Stars is vaulted, there's no live checkpoint to test them against. Build to the role (open the window, clear the deck, survive the relay) rather than to a specific 2018 god roll.
Retrospective

Why Spire still gets talked about

As a teaching artifact, Spire of Stars matters more now than as a farm. It crystallized the "relay raid" — and the patterns it overloaded later got spread across whole modern raids.

1

The ancestor of ball relays

Spire's "carry the orb to the matching target" loop is the spiritual parent of later dunk / relay mechanics across Destiny endgame. Learn it here and modern relay callouts read instantly.

2

Mechanical overload, by design

It famously asked too many simultaneous jobs for its short length. That's the lesson: fixed positions and clean callouts turn chaos into rhythm. The fix was always comms, not aim.

3

Greed taught resource discipline

The stacking Greed debuff is an early, harsh version of "carried resource pressure" — bank or hand off, never hoard. The same instinct keeps you alive in modern timers.

4

Frozen in 2018-2020

Power requirements, the Prestige version, and the loot table are history, not advice. The lair is vaulted and not launchable, so those numbers describe a sunset state.

Availability reminder: Spire of Stars is in the Content Vault and cannot be launched today. Its loadout and loot sections are historical reference only.
Rewards

What it dropped

Loot posture

No raid exotic. Spire of Stars, like the other Leviathan lairs, had no dedicated raid exotic weapon or armor chase — its appeal was the Leviathan-themed armor set and weapon pool plus prestige bragging rights, not a marquee exotic.

Historical: the exact weapon and armor drops, ornament sets, and any Prestige-mode rewards are frozen at vaulting. They cannot be earned today and old loot tables describe a sunset state. Do not treat any specific drop as currently obtainable.

Why it's a history page

Because the lair is vaulted, there is no featured-week rotation, no farm, and no live reward preview to check. That's the honest difference from a current-raid guide: there's nothing to target-farm.

What carries forward is the vocabulary — ball relays, symbol callouts, ship targeting, and resource-greed timers all reappear in playable raids and dungeons. Read this as motif practice and head to a current raid for the actual loot grind.

Note: exotic/loot specifics here are intentionally kept general — the lair is vaulted, so none of it is obtainable today. This is historical and motif reference, not a farm plan.
