Oblation Trilogy

A hidden, Whisper-style chain of three exotic missions buried in a Hive fortress on the Moon — Bloodline, Soulfed, and Immolation. Bloodline drops Cull’s Shadow, the Kinetic fusion-rifle Weapon of Sorrow with a built-in blade; the next two missions are catalyst-upgrade runs that bolt its four Soulfire traits onto the gun. The Moon’s capstone.

The Fiction

Why you’re here

The Thorn requirement and the soulfire economy aren’t hoops — they’re the price the Hive fortress sets. Here’s the story behind the offering.

An offering the fortress feeds on

In a Hive fortress beneath the Moon, the Oblation trilogy — Bloodline, Soulfed, Immolation — recovers a lost Weapon of Sorrow: Cull’s Shadow, the cursed gun of Dredgen Cull, kin to Thorn, Touch of Malice, Osteo Striga, and Necrochasm.

Because it is a Weapon of Sorrow, only another one will do — you carry Thorn to read the Hive runes that gate the chain, one cursed weapon vouching for another. "Oblation" means an offering, and the soulfire loop mirrors the Hive’s own Sword-Logic economy of sacrifice.

Speak the Hive’s contract-language with a weapon it recognizes, pay the fortress the tribute it demands, and pry a new Weapon of Sorrow from the forge that made it.

Cull’s Shadow & its four catalysts

Exotic · Kinetic Fusion Rifle · Weapon of Sorrow

Cull’s Shadow

Intrinsic — Soulburn: a glaive-fusion hybrid that pairs charged bolts with a frontal blade. Blade hits heal you and build Soulfire Charges that let your bolts inflict corruption, and corrupted targets take extra blade damage.

Exotic perk — Soulforge: corrupted targets become soulfire crystals on death; destroy a crystal and it detonates for area damage. The whole kit loops corruption into crystals into AoE.

Not craftable: Cull’s Shadow has no Deepsight or red-border pattern — it drops fully formed from the Bloodline boss. Its upgrade path is instead four Exotic catalysts (Soulfire traits) earned from hidden steps across the trilogy: Soulfire Succor (Bloodline), Soulfire Rancor and Soulfire Zeal (Soulfed), and Soulfire Skewer (Immolation). The Soulfed and Immolation missions award no separate weapon — only catalysts and cosmetics.

How to unlock it

There is no map node or quest marker — like Whisper and Zero Hour, you have to open the door yourself. First, hold a Weapon of Sorrow (Thorn from the Tower’s Monument to Lost Light is the easiest).

Run The Scarlet Keep to the final boss Hashladun and shoot the Hive discs/runes that match the symbols on the iron bars to open a hidden door. Then find and interact with the four bright-green Hive crystals seeded across Moon patrol (Temple of Crota, K1 Revelation Lost Sector, Chamber of Night via the Hellmouth, Shrine of Oryx in Archer’s Line), shooting the matching runes with your Weapon of Sorrow. That opens a secret room near Sorrow’s Harbor, where Oblation: Bloodline launches. Soloable, at a −20 Power delta.

What to bring

  • A Weapon of Sorrow (Thorn) — mandatory for every rune interaction in the unlock chain and inside the missions, not optional flavor.
  • Burst boss DPS — a Sword, Gjallarhorn, rockets, or Linear Fusions for the short, immunity-gated damage windows.
  • Cull’s Shadow itself once you own it — Soulfed’s rune puzzle reads the symbol order printed on the weapon model.
  • Mobility — an Eager Edge sword or swap-friendly setup makes the hanging-sarcophagus platforming far kinder.
How the chain works. The three missions form one continuous unlock: Bloodline gives you the gun and its first catalyst, then a hidden grimoire step opens Soulfed, whose own puzzle opens Immolation. Each mission’s catalyst comes from a secret step inside that mission — there is no separate crafting station and no Legendary-only gate on the catalysts; clear the mission and complete its hidden step.
The Route

Walkthrough

Three soulfire-themed missions, run in order. Each is a platforming-and-combat gauntlet capped by an immunity-gated boss you open with a dunked Soulfire Charge.

I · Oblation: Bloodline

Sabotage a Cabal drill, climb the fortress, and beat Valus Tau’rig to claim Cull’s Shadow — then grab the hidden catalyst before you leave.

Talk to Aunor Mahal at the start; when she leaves, drop down and clear the Cabal Totality forces, including a Totality Enforcer (shielded Centurion) by the giant laser drill.
Sabotage the drill: engage the Manual Safety Override to expose three blue Cooling Tower Control Fuses and shoot all three.
Destroy Cooling Pillar #1 by shooting the four randomly-opening vents on the central device, then ride the launch pad up.
For Pillars #2 and #3, kill the Enforcer, hit the terminal to expose three more fuses, break the left and right pillar vents, clear the Legion, then trip the overload terminal.
Go up, way up. Jump across Hive lanterns and sarcophagi through the tunnels to the very top — lower branches are dead ends. Reach the red room, drop down, and find the crack in the stairs to the Soulfire Barrier.
Extinguish the Soulfire Barrier: kill the Pyre Matron Wizard to drop the shield, finish a Soulfire Vessel (Thrall) for a Soulfire Charge, and carry charges to three unlit pyres to bring the barrier down.
Boss — Valus Tau’rig, phase 1: burn down his small health bar with heavy DPS (Sword, Gjallarhorn, rockets, or Linear Fusions).
Phase 2: when “He seeks a source of soulfire” appears, the Valus goes immune. Chase the Pyre Wizards into the side rooms, clear a Soulfire Vessel, grab the charge, and dunk it in the brazier he is drawing from to stun and strip immunity. He is far tankier here — repeat the charge-dunk until he dies.
Do not extract yet. Cull’s Shadow drops from the boss. Stay in the area and find the hidden Hive book to claim the Soulfire Succor catalyst before you leave, or you will have to rerun the mission.

II · Oblation: Soulfed

A worm-and-crystal puzzle dungeon ending on a three-boss trio. Awards Soulfire Rancor, the Soulfire Zeal puzzle, and the Sorrow’s Coronet Ghost Shell.

Open Soulfed first. In Bloodline’s final Soulfire-Charge room near the boss arena, climb the red towers on the right and interact with the floating Hive grimoire while Cull’s Shadow is equipped, then shoot the matching runes on the locked door to break the seal and launch the mission.
Drop through the hole in the floor, descending past spinning spiked-cylinder hazards and soulfire jets while avoiding Thrall.
Learn the loop: punch a Soulfire Vessel for the Soulfire Charge, dunk it at an unlit brazier to spawn soulfire Hive worms, pick one up, and throw it at a green Soulfire Crystal to destroy it — worms detonate in your hands after about 19 seconds, so move fast.
First puzzle room: kill the Soulfire Vessel Knight, dunk the charge, and throw worms at the two crystals to clear the flames sealing the exit.
Second puzzle space: after another Vessel Knight, hit four crystals — one in a cave across a moat, one on the far wall, one beside a rotating wheel, and one atop the sarcophagi near a fire pipe.
Optional secret (needed later): below this area’s starting platform, activate the bright yellow button in a crystal claw to open a hidden room with a Hive tome — one of the interactables Immolation requires.
Cross the long jumping gauntlet over hanging sarcophagi — an Eager Edge sword makes this section much easier.
Boss trio: three giant Hive bosses, killed in sequence — an Ogre (center crystal), a Wizard (left crystal), and a Knight (right crystal). For each: clear adds to spawn a Vessel, melee it for the charge, dunk at the ground-floor brazier, grab a worm, and throw it at that boss’s matching crystal to drop its shield, then DPS. The Ogre emits a purple energy sphere that pulls you toward its center and eye beams, so commit DPS from cover.
Open the chest for the Soulfire Rancor catalyst and the Sorrow’s Coronet Ghost Shell; a grimoire appears to interact with.
Hidden Zeal puzzle: with Cull’s Shadow equipped, interact with the grimoire to reveal six rune discs on statues, then shoot them in the exact top-to-bottom order printed on the Cull’s Shadow model. This awards Soulfire Zeal and unlocks Oblation: Immolation.

III · Oblation: Immolation

A short, platforming-heavy run capped by Ir Gohl, Forger of Sorrow. Awards the fourth and final catalyst, Soulfire Skewer.

Prerequisite: Bloodline and Soulfed cleared, with the Soulfed rune puzzle solved to unlock Soulfire Zeal — that step reveals the interaction that begins Immolation.
Opening platforming: drop down and to the left, then hug the wall while ascending across the moving sarcophagi past Acolytes toward the large sarcophagus guarded by a Wizard.
Clear the platform, then find a small hole in the wall that leads into a larger green-lit cave system.
Push through the caves, shooting the destructible Hive chitin barriers, then defeat the yellow-bar Ogre to open the passage. Jump to the higher platform and enter the upper cave through a pipe.
Bellow Stoker encounter: deplete his health in thirds. When he shields, stand on the three circular plates to redirect soulfire while dodging the jets. Repeat three times with escalating adds (shield Knights, then an Ogre).
Long run to the boss: drop along the right wall through blind corners, swinging pendulums, and soulfire jets; pass a Shrieker room and cross bridges weaving through the giant Hive statues.
Boss — Ir Gohl, Forger of Sorrow (Hive Knight), phase 1: three soulfire braziers power his immunity, each tended by a Forgebound Cantor Wizard. Kill all three Wizards to snuff the braziers and drop the shield, then DPS roughly a sixth of his health.
Phase 2: Ir Gohl goes immune and moves to center, charging soulfire spheres that detonate the platform and instakill anyone standing on it. Track the single brazier that lights, grab Soulfire Worms from it, and throw them at the two green crystals flanking the arena.
Activating both crystals drops his shield for about 30 seconds of DPS. Avoid the explosion cycles between worm runs and repeat until Ir Gohl falls.
Interact with the reward chest to claim the Soulfire Skewer catalyst and the Denier of Futurity Sparrow — completing all four Cull’s Shadow catalysts.
The Details

Mechanics & the bosses

Key mechanics

Weapon of Sorrow gating. A Weapon of Sorrow (Thorn) is required to shoot Hive runes — both to unlock the chain and for mid-mission rune puzzles.
Soulfire Charge economy. Melee or finish a Soulfire Vessel to grab a charge, then dunk it at a brazier — used to lower barriers, spawn worms, and strip boss immunity.
Soulfire worms. Dunking a charge in Soulfed/Immolation spawns Hive worms; carry one and throw it at a green crystal. They explode after ~19 seconds, so plan your route first.
Soulfire crystals. The green crystals open paths and trigger boss damage phases — only a thrown worm destroys them.
Go up. The Bloodline tunnel maze rewards climbing to the top; lower paths are dead ends that bleed the clock on any timed run.

The three bosses

Valus Tau’rig (Bloodline) — a Cabal Valus empowered by Hive soulfire and a trio of Pyre Wizards. He goes immune until you cut his soulfire supply by dunking a Soulfire Charge at the brazier he is draining; repeat the charge-dunk to stun him for each damage window.

Hive trio (Soulfed) — an Ogre, a Wizard, and a Knight, each gated behind its own crystal. Run the Vessel → charge → worm → crystal loop per boss to open its damage phase; mind the Ogre’s pull-to-center sphere.

Ir Gohl, Forger of Sorrow (Immolation) — a Hive Knight. Phase 1: kill three Forgebound Cantor Wizards to drop the brazier shield. Phase 2: he goes immune and charges platform-detonating spheres — worm-and-crystal the shield down, then DPS for ~30 seconds while dodging the explosions.

Lore lens · why it works

The rune gates only answer to a paracausal cursed weapon because only Thorn speaks the Hive’s contract-language. The Soulfire Charge, worms, and crystals are you running the fortress’s tribute economy — paying the offering it feeds on. Cutting the brazier Valus Tau’rig drains collapses his borrowed Hive shield, and the worm-and-crystal loop unmakes the forge-shield of Ir Gohl, the smith who makes Weapons of Sorrow.

Difficulty & rewards. Each mission runs in a standard exotic difficulty plus harder tiers. Higher difficulty is about completion challenge and Triumph progress, not a separate weapon — the catalysts, not the difficulty, are the real upgrade path, and they come from the missions’ hidden steps rather than a Legendary-only gate. The endgame flex is the timed Legendary gauntlet: clear all three missions back-to-back inside roughly 30 minutes for the Darkest Depths Triumph and its cosmetics (the Agony of Want ship and Oblation emblem).
Don’t Wipe

Tips & common mistakes

Bring Thorn before you start. A Weapon of Sorrow is mandatory for the unlock chain and the in-mission rune steps — turning up without one stalls you at the first locked door.
Never extract after the Bloodline boss. Cull’s Shadow drops, but the Soulfire Succor catalyst is a hidden Hive book you have to grab before leaving, or it is a full rerun.
Don’t skip Soulfed’s optional steps. The yellow crystal-claw button opens the Hive-tome room Immolation needs, and the six rune discs grant Soulfire Zeal — shoot them in the order printed on the Cull’s Shadow model, not the order in the room.
Respect the worm timer. Worms detonate in ~19 seconds — only pick one up once you have a clear line to the crystal, or it blows up in your hands.
Don’t dump DPS into a shielded boss. On Valus Tau’rig and Ir Gohl, strip immunity (dunk a charge / worm the crystals) first; hitting the shield just burns the clock.
Ir Gohl phase 2 is a positioning check. Only one brazier lights per cycle — commit to it instantly and never linger on the platform while a soulfire sphere is charging, or you are instakilled.
Build Pairing

Best artifact for this exotic

Cull’s Shadow is a Kinetic fusion rifle that leans on a corruption-and-crystal loop, so pair it with an artifact that boosts Fusion damage and feeds the Sorrow / Weaken economy. The Artifact 2.0 layer accelerates the build — it doesn’t gate it.

Primary pick

Tablet of Ruin

Why: its Particle Reconstruction perk boosts Fusion Rifle damage — exactly Cull’s Shadow’s frame — while the Tablet’s Void/Arc economy suits a Sorrow build that wants Weaken uptime and ability churn around the soulfire crystals. The cleanest match for the gun’s bolt-and-detonate loop.

Alternative: Encrypted Data Disk — its Kinetic-weapon economy directly supports Cull’s Shadow’s Kinetic frame, feeding ability energy and ammo back through the weapon you are already firing.

Reminder: artifact perks are disabled in Competitive and Trials but active in all PvE — so for an Oblation run, slot freely. See the PvE Weapons page for the full loadout around Cull’s Shadow.
