The Fiction

Why you're here

The Blights and hidden Oracles aren't just obstacles — you're chasing a dead Worm-God's echo into a temple that's half-simulation. Here's the story behind the whisper.

The whisper of a Worm-God

Chasing a Taken incursion on Io, you follow the whisper of Xol, Will of the Thousands — the Hive Worm-God whose severed influence still lingers — into a hidden Taken temple. Eris Morn helps you refine what you find.

Your reward carries that god inside it. Whisper of the Worm, the heavy sniper, holds a shard of the Worm-God’s essence — its "White Nail" refill-on-precision is Xol’s hunger made mechanical, a gun that feeds on the kills you land.

Sever the incursion’s anchors, coax the temple to give up its hidden Oracles, and walk out with a Worm-God’s appetite in your hands.

Whisper of the Worm

Intrinsic — White Nail: landing three rapid precision hits auto-refills the magazine straight from reserves, so a steady hand becomes sustained burst DPS with no reload. The original "no-reload" boss sniper, and still a damage-rotation staple.

Craft it: your first completion (any difficulty) drops a Deepsight Whisper — extract it at the Enclave to unlock the craftable pattern. Each repeat clear awards an intrinsic crafting upgrade. The Whisper quest is deprecated; the Exotic now arrives on completion, and the mission’s secrets still count toward Triumphs.

Catalyst: is a higher-difficulty reward, not a first-clear drop. The Director's reward preview shows the tier that lists it. Once charged, Whispered Breathing grants bonus range and precision damage while you hold ADS without firing.

How to start

Open the Director, go to Vanguard Ops → Pinnacle, pick The Whisper, and choose a difficulty. It's a permanent Pinnacle Ops entry and free-to-play.

The time limit starts on load — the Director shows it for your difficulty and modifiers (13:00 and 15:37 on the Master setups we ran) — but it is a score target, not a fail state: a solo Master run that finished at 23:48 still cleared. There are no checkpoints, so the whole run is one continuous push. Hidden Oracles and chests still spawn for collectors.

What to bring

  • A boss-DPS heavy and good vertical mobility — the route is a long raid-style jump puzzle.
  • Whisper of the Worm itself once you own it, to clear Blight sets and the boss.
  • Add-clear and a little self-healing for the immune-gated final boss.
The Route

Walkthrough

A timed jump puzzle into a combat gauntlet, ending on an immune-gated Ogre. Move efficiently — the clock runs the whole time.

Launch The Whisper from the Pinnacle Ops node and pick a difficulty; the time limit starts on load (shown in the Director, about 13 to 16 minutes; going over costs score, not the clear) and there are no checkpoints.
Spawn in the Grove of Ulan-Tan, clear the Taken Thrall, then shoot the floating Vex Cube to spawn platforms and drop into the entry hole. Vex Cubes throughout the run create shortcut platforms for teammates.
First platforming section: cross the red-highlighted platforms, watching for wall-mounted Taken traps and pistons that shove you into the abyss — wait for each piston to retract before advancing.
Ride the Cube elevator up, then cross the chasm of diagonal pillars, dodging Taken traps and sniper fire.
At the large green/vegetation room, jump the grass-covered platforms across — or skip it entirely by turning at the entrance and crouching under the small ramp to save time.
Run the final circular structure and drop toward the bright light below into the combat area.
Clear the combat gauntlet rooms of Taken and destroy the Blights seeded in each room to open the exit. Use Whisper itself on Blight sets as you go.
In the final arena, rally at the banner, then shoot the Vex Cubes to summon the three Aspect bosses — Urzok (Taken Knight), Ta'aurc (Taken Cabal Centurion), and Drevis (Taken Fallen). Fight from the pillars and alcoves so you aren't surrounded; killing all three at once satisfies a triumph.
Tulgorh, Aspect of Agony (Taken Ogre) spawns immune. Kill the Taken Shield Weaver (Wizard) pair at the back to strip its shield, deal damage, and repeat — it resummons the Wizards and floods Shadow Thralls and Blights as its health drops.
Open the chest at the back of the room to claim Whisper of the Worm — and, on first clear, the Deepsight that unlocks its craftable pattern.
The Details

Mechanics & the boss

Key mechanics

Time limit, no checkpoints. The Director shows the limit for your setup (13:00 and 15:37 on Master). Beating it is for score; going over still completes the run, but it has to be done in one go.
Raid-style jump puzzle. Red platforms, piston walls, and wall traps that knock you off — patience beats speed.
Vex Cubes can be shot to create shortcut platforms and to summon the final-arena bosses.
Taken Blights gate each combat room; clearing them opens the exit,.
Hidden Oracles scattered through the mission unlock an exotic ship and feed upgrade progress.

Boss · Tulgorh, Aspect of Agony

A Taken Ogre, preceded by the three-boss Aspect trio. Tulgorh is immune until you kill the Taken Shield Weaver (Wizard) pair near the back of the arena, which opens a damage window.

As its health drops it resummons the Wizards (re-shielding itself) and floods the room with Shadow Thralls and fresh Blights. Repeat the kill-Wizards → damage cycle from cover until it dies, then open the chest behind it.

Lore lens · why it works

The Taken Blights are the incursion’s anchors — clearing one severs the corruption holding a door, and Whisper shatters them cleanly. The Vex Cubes and hidden Oracles mark where the temple bleeds into simulation. Tulgorh’s shield is woven by a pair of Wizards; kill the weavers and it simply re-binds them as fast as you break it, which is why the fight is a loop rather than a burn.

Difficulty & rewards. The Director offers Advanced (330), Expert (350), Master (400), Grandmaster (450) and Ultimate (500), plus optional modifiers that raise the team score forecast and reward rank. Your first clear drops Whisper plus the Deepsight for the craftable pattern; repeat clears award intrinsic upgrades (White Nail I, II, III…). Higher tiers and modifiers raise the reward grade. Finding every Oracle in a run earns the reprised exotic ship (an homage to A Thousand Wings).
Don't Wipe

Tips & common mistakes

Fight the final room from the pillars and tunnel alcoves, not the open center, so adds and bosses can't surround you.
On Tulgorh, always kill the Wizard pair first — damaging the shielded Ogre just burns the timer.
Use Whisper of the Worm itself to destroy Blight sets while you clear.
Save time by crouching under the ramp to skip the green room, and grab Oracles en route only if you want the exotic ship.
Build Pairing

Best artifact for this exotic

Whisper is a precision boss-DPS heavy sniper, so pair it with the artifact that stacks sniper damage and feeds a swap rotation. The Artifact 2.0 layer accelerates the build — it doesn't gate it.

Primary pick

Hunter's Journal

Why: its Sniper's Meditation stacks Sniper damage, stability, and reload as you land hits — exactly Whisper's loop — and Radiant Orbs keep you Radiant for the precision bonus. The premier sniper / Prismatic DPS artifact, ideal if you run Whisper alongside Still Hunt or Izanagi's Burden.

Solar alternative: Queensfoil Censer — on a Solar build, Radiant uptime (Fever and Chill, Heart of the Flame) raises Whisper's precision damage during the phase.

Reminder: artifact perks are disabled in Competitive and Trials but active in all PvE — so for a Pinnacle Ops run, slot freely. See the PvE Weapons page for the full loadout around Whisper.
