A hidden, Whisper-style chain of three exotic missions buried in a Hive fortress on the Moon — Bloodline, Soulfed, and Immolation. Bloodline drops Cull’s Shadow, the Kinetic fusion-rifle Weapon of Sorrow with a built-in blade; the next two missions are catalyst-upgrade runs that bolt its four Soulfire traits onto the gun. The Moon’s capstone.
The Thorn requirement and the soulfire economy aren’t hoops — they’re the price the Hive fortress sets. Here’s the story behind the offering.
In a Hive fortress beneath the Moon, the Oblation trilogy — Bloodline, Soulfed, Immolation — recovers a lost Weapon of Sorrow: Cull’s Shadow, the cursed gun of Dredgen Cull, kin to Thorn, Touch of Malice, Osteo Striga, and Necrochasm.
Because it is a Weapon of Sorrow, only another one will do — you carry Thorn to read the Hive runes that gate the chain, one cursed weapon vouching for another. "Oblation" means an offering, and the soulfire loop mirrors the Hive’s own Sword-Logic economy of sacrifice.
Speak the Hive’s contract-language with a weapon it recognizes, pay the fortress the tribute it demands, and pry a new Weapon of Sorrow from the forge that made it.
Intrinsic — Soulburn: a glaive-fusion hybrid that pairs charged bolts with a frontal blade. Blade hits heal you and build Soulfire Charges that let your bolts inflict corruption, and corrupted targets take extra blade damage.
Exotic perk — Soulforge: corrupted targets become soulfire crystals on death; destroy a crystal and it detonates for area damage. The whole kit loops corruption into crystals into AoE.
Not craftable: Cull’s Shadow has no Deepsight or red-border pattern — it drops fully formed from the Bloodline boss. Its upgrade path is instead four Exotic catalysts (Soulfire traits) earned from hidden steps across the trilogy: Soulfire Succor (Bloodline), Soulfire Rancor and Soulfire Zeal (Soulfed), and Soulfire Skewer (Immolation). The Soulfed and Immolation missions award no separate weapon — only catalysts and cosmetics.
There is no map node or quest marker — like Whisper and Zero Hour, you have to open the door yourself. First, hold a Weapon of Sorrow (Thorn from the Tower’s Monument to Lost Light is the easiest).
Run The Scarlet Keep to the final boss Hashladun and shoot the Hive discs/runes that match the symbols on the iron bars to open a hidden door. Then find and interact with the four bright-green Hive crystals seeded across Moon patrol (Temple of Crota, K1 Revelation Lost Sector, Chamber of Night via the Hellmouth, Shrine of Oryx in Archer’s Line), shooting the matching runes with your Weapon of Sorrow. That opens a secret room near Sorrow’s Harbor, where Oblation: Bloodline launches. Soloable, at a −20 Power delta.
Three soulfire-themed missions, run in order. Each is a platforming-and-combat gauntlet capped by an immunity-gated boss you open with a dunked Soulfire Charge.
Sabotage a Cabal drill, climb the fortress, and beat Valus Tau’rig to claim Cull’s Shadow — then grab the hidden catalyst before you leave.
A worm-and-crystal puzzle dungeon ending on a three-boss trio. Awards Soulfire Rancor, the Soulfire Zeal puzzle, and the Sorrow’s Coronet Ghost Shell.
A short, platforming-heavy run capped by Ir Gohl, Forger of Sorrow. Awards the fourth and final catalyst, Soulfire Skewer.
Valus Tau’rig (Bloodline) — a Cabal Valus empowered by Hive soulfire and a trio of Pyre Wizards. He goes immune until you cut his soulfire supply by dunking a Soulfire Charge at the brazier he is draining; repeat the charge-dunk to stun him for each damage window.
Hive trio (Soulfed) — an Ogre, a Wizard, and a Knight, each gated behind its own crystal. Run the Vessel → charge → worm → crystal loop per boss to open its damage phase; mind the Ogre’s pull-to-center sphere.
Ir Gohl, Forger of Sorrow (Immolation) — a Hive Knight. Phase 1: kill three Forgebound Cantor Wizards to drop the brazier shield. Phase 2: he goes immune and charges platform-detonating spheres — worm-and-crystal the shield down, then DPS for ~30 seconds while dodging the explosions.
The rune gates only answer to a paracausal cursed weapon because only Thorn speaks the Hive’s contract-language. The Soulfire Charge, worms, and crystals are you running the fortress’s tribute economy — paying the offering it feeds on. Cutting the brazier Valus Tau’rig drains collapses his borrowed Hive shield, and the worm-and-crystal loop unmakes the forge-shield of Ir Gohl, the smith who makes Weapons of Sorrow.
Cull’s Shadow is a Kinetic fusion rifle that leans on a corruption-and-crystal loop, so pair it with an artifact that boosts Fusion damage and feeds the Sorrow / Weaken economy. The Artifact 2.0 layer accelerates the build — it doesn’t gate it.
Why: its Particle Reconstruction perk boosts Fusion Rifle damage — exactly Cull’s Shadow’s frame — while the Tablet’s Void/Arc economy suits a Sorrow build that wants Weaken uptime and ability churn around the soulfire crystals. The cleanest match for the gun’s bolt-and-detonate loop.
Alternative: Encrypted Data Disk — its Kinetic-weapon economy directly supports Cull’s Shadow’s Kinetic frame, feeding ability energy and ammo back through the weapon you are already firing.
Where Cull’s Shadow fits in a DPS rotation, plus the heavies and supports to pair with it.
