The Fiction

Why you're here

The paired buffs and symbol-locks aren't arbitrary — they're an Ahamkara's protective legacy, and you're here to guard a wish. Here's the story behind the boons.

The egg of a wish-dragon

At Mara Sov’s behest you enter the Black Garden to recover a stolen Riven Ahamkara egg from the Sol Divisive Vex, who are trying to harness wish-magic. The paired buffs you carry — the Sire’s Obligation and the Dam’s Gift — are the protective legacy of Riven ("the Dam") and her mate ("the Sire").

Your reward is the office made into a weapon. Wish-Keeper, the Strand bow that traps and suspends, is the tool of one entrusted to guard a wish — exactly the role the egg asks of you.

Take up the dragons’ boons, speak the Taken’s wish-lock in its proper order, and carry a wish safely out of the Garden.

Wish-Keeper & how to craft it

Exotic · Combat Bow · Strand

Wish-Keeper

The Strand control bow. Wish-Keeper is built around traps and suspends — nocked arrows can lay Strand snares that catch and hold targets, turning a wave of adds into a frozen line you clear at leisure. It anchors a Strand control loadout rather than a pure damage one.

Craft it: your first completion (any difficulty) awards the bow as an Exotic Deepsight weapon — extract or dismantle it to unlock the craftable pattern, then shape it at the Relic in the Enclave on Mars. Every clear awards an intrinsic crafting upgrade, and the four hidden chests inside the mission drop more (alongside reprised "Undying" Legendaries with a Deepsight chance). The chests are the weekly-gated piece: one new chest unlocks each week until all four are available, and their rewards pay out once per week per character — so early on you won't loot all four on a single run.

Catalysts: the four are unlocked through Constellation quests (Lock, Wish, Tower, and Pair) from Mara Sov at the H.E.L.M. Each quest's final step is a higher-difficulty Starcrossed clear (the Director’s reward preview shows the tier), and multiple catalysts can be completed in a single run if their quest steps are all at that stage — you do not need four separate weekly clears: Multi-Threaded Snare Refit (Lock — suspend more targets), Hatchling Refit (Wish — spawns Threadlings), Enduring Snare Refit (Tower — longer trap duration), and Vorpal Weapon Refit (Pair — boss, vehicle, and Guardian damage).

How to start

Open the Director, go to Vanguard Ops → Pinnacle Ops, pick Starcrossed, and choose a difficulty plus any optional modifiers. Starcrossed lives permanently in Pinnacle Ops.

You drop straight into the Black Garden underbelly. It can be run solo or in a fireteam.

What to bring

  • Buff-uptime awareness over raw DPS — most of the run is gated by Sire's Obligation and Dam's Gift timers, not by burst damage.
  • Add-clear and self-healing for the symbol-lock encounters and the fog-flooded boss arena.
  • Single-target damage for Akardon's short open windows, and Strand to match the surge once you own Wish-Keeper.
The Route

Walkthrough

A traversal opener into a pair of buff-gated symbol puzzles, ending on a shield-gated Vex Mind. The buffs are the mission — keep them refreshed and the rest is add-clear.

Launch Starcrossed from the Pinnacle Ops node and drop into the Black Garden underbelly.
Opening traversal: jump along the moss-covered branches and shoot the oval buds and pods to spawn temporary platforms across the chasm.
First buff puzzle: stand in a glowing flower circle to gain Sire's Obligation (~45s) — it lets you damage the Taken Phalanxes and reveals the symbols floating above them.
Match the symbol on the sealed gate to the Phalanx carrying the same symbol, and kill that specific Phalanx to drop the energy barrier.
Open the Way: the large gate projects three symbols in order. Refresh Sire's Obligation at the blue light pillars and defeat the left, middle, and right Phalanxes in the matching sequence.
Learn the second buff: pick up Dam's Gift (~45s) to move safely through the hazardous orange fog.
Access the Transit Mechanism: use Dam's Gift to reach three deposit stations across the map, kill the Wyvern miniboss guarding each, and overload all three.
Deactivate the Barrier: grab both buffs together to become Crowned by Dragons (combines both effects, ~45s, refreshed at either buff pool), then defeat three Phalanxes guarding the caves in the correct symbol order.
Before the boss, plant the Rally Flag to top off ammo and Super, then drop into Akardon's arena.
The arena is flooded with orange fog — stay Crowned by Dragons the entire fight; let the buff lapse and you die, so keep refreshing at the buff pools.
Kill the two flanking Pitiless Attendants first — while they live, Akardon keeps a damage-reducing shield that heavily cuts the damage he takes.
Clear Akardon's Sol Divisive adds (watch the detaining Seekers), then burn the boss during the open damage window after each shield-break.
Repeat the shield-break, add-clear, DPS cycle until Akardon dies, then pass through the new hole in the Vex wall to claim Riven's egg and the chest holding Wish-Keeper.
The Details

Mechanics & the boss

Key mechanics

Sire's Obligation. Lets you damage the Taken Phalanxes and reveals their lock symbols.
Dam's Gift. Protects you from the deadly orange fog so you can cross the hazard zones.
Crowned by Dragons. Holding both buffs at once combines their effects for the barrier and boss encounters.
Symbol-lock puzzles. A gate shows a symbol (or 3-symbol sequence); kill the Phalanx(es) carrying the matching symbol(s) in order. Wrong picks dissipate the energy and reset the lock.
Buff-timer management. Every buff lasts ~45s and must be refreshed at flower circles, light pillars, or buff pools.
Boss shield. Akardon's damage-reducing shield is sustained by the two flanking Pitiless Attendants — they must die before you can deal real boss damage.

Boss · Akardon, Pitiless Mind

A Sol Divisive Vex Mind protected by Ahamkara bioenergetics, fought in the Black Garden arena under a constant blanket of orange fog — stay Crowned by Dragons or you die outright.

Akardon holds a damage-reducing shield propped up by the two flanking Pitiless Attendants. Kill both to strip the shield, clear the Sol Divisive adds (especially the detaining Seekers), then burn the boss during the open window. Repeat the shield-break, add-clear, DPS cycle until he falls, then claim the egg and chest behind him.

Lore lens · why it works

The Sire’s Obligation, Dam’s Gift, and Crowned by Dragons are Ahamkara boons — they let you wound the egg’s Taken guardians, shield you from the killing fog, and mark you as its chosen keeper. The symbol-lock puzzles are the Taken speaking a wish-combination, so you kill in order to say it. Akardon grafts stolen Ahamkara bioenergetics, so cutting off the two Attendants feeding him that wish-power is what drops his shield.

Difficulty & rewards. Lower tiers drop the Deepsight bow plus intrinsic upgrades and weekly-tier rewards. A higher tier is required for the catalyst upgrades (the Director’s reward preview shows the tier) — each is the final step of a Constellation quest from Mara Sov at the H.E.L.M., and more than one can finish on a single run. Pinnacle Ops lists Advanced to Ultimate; difficulty sets the reward tier, and optional modifiers push it further (Grandmaster and Ultimate are the top challenge tiers). Sweep the four hidden chests for extra intrinsic upgrades, but note they're weekly-gated — a new chest unlocks each week until all four are available, and each pays out only once per week.
Don't Wipe

Tips & common mistakes

Always refresh your buff before pushing forward — the orange fog and the boss arena kill you fast the moment Sire's Obligation, Dam's Gift, or Crowned by Dragons expires.
Read the gate's symbol order carefully and kill Phalanxes in sequence; a wrong target resets the lock and burns time.
At Akardon, drop the two flanking Pitiless Attendants and the detaining Seekers before committing to boss DPS, and use the Rally Flag right before dropping in.
Run a higher difficulty after the Constellation quests for the catalyst upgrades, and sweep the four hidden chests for extra intrinsic upgrades — they're weekly-gated, so one new chest opens each week and each loots once per week rather than every run.
Build Pairing

Best artifact for this exotic

Wish-Keeper is a Strand control bow built on traps and suspends, so pair it with the artifact that amplifies Strand crowd control. The Artifact 2.0 layer accelerates the build — it doesn't gate it.

Primary pick

NPA Repulsion Regulator

Why: its Strand support is exactly what Wish-Keeper's suspends want — Improved Unraveling, Strand Soldier, and Squad Goals Woven Mail feed the control loop, turning every trapped pack into unravel and suspend uptime that keeps you and your fireteam alive through the fog phases.

Alternative: Implement of Curiosity — Threaded Blast and Tangled Web extend the Strand-Tangle control, chaining detonations off the suspends to clear the symbol-lock and boss-arena adds faster.

Reminder: artifact perks are disabled in Competitive and Trials but active in all PvE — so for a Pinnacle Ops run, slot freely. See the PvE Weapons page for the full loadout around Wish-Keeper.
