The Fiction

Why you're here

The hijacked Cabal vehicles and the towers you tear down aren't set pieces — you're racing to silence a broadcast. Here's the story behind the airfield.

The message you seize

In Season of the Risen on Mars, Empress Caiatl’s Cabal report a rogue insurgent broadcast — Psion separatists rallying rebels against her Vanguard alliance. You hijack Cabal armor and vehicles to storm the airfield and silence the transmission.

Your reward is the message. Dead Messenger, the Void wave-frame grenade launcher, is the insurgent voice seized and repurposed — killing the messenger and taking his broadcast is the whole point of "Vox Obscura," the hidden voice.

Turn the Empress’s own war machines on her enemies, bring down the towers carrying the signal, and take the messenger’s voice for your own.

Dead Messenger & how to craft it

Dead Messenger

Intrinsic — Trinary Vision: fires a single projectile that splits into three ground-traveling energy waves on impact, raking everything in a wide arc in front of you. Brutal for packed adds and for chunking shielded majors in a single trigger pull.

The Fundamentals: swap its element on the fly between Void, Arc, and Solar to match the week's Surge or your subclass — though Void is its native flavor and the one this build leans on.

Craft it: your first Standard (or higher) clear drops a Deepsight (red-border) Dead Messenger — extract the pattern via the Weapon Mods screen and craft the weapon at the Relic in the Enclave on Mars. After that, every completion on any difficulty grants Trinary Vision intrinsic upgrades, maxing out over a few more runs.

Catalyst: Turnabout — grants an overshield when you break a combatant's shield or a Guardian's Super — comes from the hard-tier catalyst clear (it was Master); the Director’s reward preview shows the tier. Further high-difficulty runs open up the weapon's later trait choices.

How to start

Open the Director, go to Vanguard Ops → Pinnacle Ops, then the Pinnacle tab in the Portal, pick Vox Obscura, and choose a difficulty. It launches directly from the list.

You need The Witch Queen content to access it. The mission breaks into a timed airfield vehicle run and a separate ~10-minute bunker timer for the control rooms — the clock is the real opponent here, not the adds.

What to bring

  • Champion counters on higher difficulty — Barrier and Unstoppable Champions both appear (Arbalest for Barrier, Leviathan's Breath for Unstoppable are sound picks).
  • A boss-DPS heavy — a Linear Fusion Rifle shines in the tight Qabix damage windows.
  • Self-sustain for the hallway burn traps; invisibility (Omnioculus) lets you tank the fire on the way through.
The Route

Walkthrough

An untimed hangar opener, a timed vehicle dash across the airfield, then a timed bunker push through three control rooms into a three-phase boss. Two separate clocks — keep moving.

Launch Vox Obscura from Vanguard Ops → Pinnacle Ops → Pinnacle tab and pick a difficulty. Enter the Cabal hangar (untimed): clear or bypass the defenders. On higher difficulty kill them since one is a Barrier Champion, and dealing with the nearby Unstoppable Champion here keeps it off your back later.
Encounter 1 — Clear the Airfield (timed). Hijack a Cabal Interceptor and destroy the first Goliath Tank outside the hangar — ram its side for an instant kill to save time.
Switch to the Drake-style tank and destroy the two patrolling Goliath Tanks sweeping the airfield.
Take out the three signal towers: kill the guarding tanks to drop each tower's shield, blow up its three glowing generators, then destroy the tower core (about two tank shots each).
Rally at the banner at the bunker entrance to refill ammo and abilities — this starts the ~10-minute bunker timer for the control-room phase.
Encounter 2 — Race to the Control Room. Push through the bunker to three separate control rooms. In each, clear Psions and Champions, then find and melee the Psion Commander inside its energy field to strip the miniboss shield, kill the miniboss, and hack the terminal.
Cross the connecting hallways carefully — fire/burn traps can instantly kill on higher difficulty. Invisibility (Omnioculus) lets you tank the burn through them.
After all three terminals are hacked, clear the Barrier Champions and Scorpius turrets guarding the door and enter the boss arena to face Qabix, Insurgent.
Phase Qabix: deal one-third of his health, then melee the three Psion Commanders that spawn (one per arena end) inside their fields to remove his immunity. Repeat across three phases, handling add waves and the purple dome trap (shoot the glowing orbs to escape) until he dies.
Claim Dead Messenger and your difficulty-based rewards before the timer expires — and, on first clear, the Deepsight that unlocks its craftable pattern.

Mechanics & the boss

Key mechanics

Two separate timers. A timed airfield vehicle run, then a ~10-minute bunker timer that starts when you rally at the banner before the control rooms — not at the start of the airfield.
Hijacked Cabal vehicles. The Interceptor (ram a Goliath Tank's side for an instant kill) and a Drake-style tank for clearing the airfield.
Signal towers stay shielded until nearby Goliath Tanks are destroyed; each tower needs its three glowing generators down before the core can be damaged.
Psion Commanders must be meleed inside their energy field to strip immunity from minibosses and from Qabix — shooting them does nothing.
Hallway burn traps between control rooms can instantly kill on higher difficulty; higher tiers also add Barrier and Unstoppable Champions requiring counters.

Boss · Qabix, Insurgent

A massive Cabal Psion that calls down lightning and burning projectiles, fought across three phases gated by the Psion Commander immunity mechanic.

Each phase: deal roughly a third of his health, then melee the three Psion Commanders (one per arena end) inside their energy fields to drop his immunity for the next damage window. Watch for the purple dome trap — shoot the glowing orbs to break out — and keep clearing add waves between windows until he falls.

Lore lens · why it works

Hijacking Cabal vehicles lets you operate behind enemy lines with Caiatl’s own war machines. The signal towers and generators are the broadcast’s spine — dropping the Goliath escorts strips the relay shields so you can kill each transmitter. Qabix’s immunity is sustained by a ring of Psion Commanders projecting a psychic field, so only a melee inside that field disrupts the mind-shield keeping him standing.

Difficulty & rewards. Standard drops the first-clear Deepsight (red-border) Dead Messenger pattern plus an intrinsic upgrade and a Season of the Risen weapon. Higher tiers grant extra intrinsic upgrades and are the source of the Turnabout Catalyst (the Director’s reward preview shows the tier); Pinnacle Ops lists Advanced to Ultimate, and higher difficulty raises the reward tier. Every clear, at any tier, also drops a Season of the Risen weapon.
Don't Wipe

Tips & common mistakes

Bring Champion counters on higher difficulty — Leviathan's Breath for Unstoppable, Arbalest for Barrier — and rally at the banner only when you're ready to start the bunker clock.
On Qabix, stagger him with an Unstoppable stun before committing Super or burst DPS; fight from one arena end hugging cover and use a Linear Fusion Rifle for the damage windows.
Skip unnecessary adds in the vehicle phases — the timer is the real threat. Ram tanks with the Interceptor to bank time.
Always melee Psion Commanders inside their energy field — shooting does nothing, and missing one keeps the miniboss or Qabix immune.
Build Pairing

Best artifact for this exotic

Dead Messenger is a wave-frame Grenade Launcher, so pair it with the artifact that turns GL damage into an Armor-Charge economy — or, on a Void build, one that amplifies its wave damage directly. The Artifact 2.0 layer accelerates the build — it doesn't gate it.

Primary pick

Queensfoil Censer

Why: its Blast Radius perk builds an Armor-Charge economy off Grenade-Launcher final blows — exactly Dead Messenger's slot — which then fuels the artifact's damage and economy perks, so the wave-frame loop sustains itself across a long Vox Obscura run.

Void alternative: Tablet of Ruin — its Void Volatile and Weaken perks amplify Dead Messenger's Void waves directly, spreading detonations and softening the shielded majors and Champions you face in the bunker and boss arena.

Reminder: artifact perks are disabled in Competitive and Trials but active in all PvE — so for a Pinnacle Ops run, slot freely. See the PvE Weapons page for the full loadout around Dead Messenger.
