00 · The one-line version

A vault built to refuse intruders — and death

The Deep Stone Crypt is the secret Clovis Bray facility where the Exo were born, engineered from the start to be un-enterable. The Fallen House of Salvation have found it, and they mean to use its resurrection tech and its buried Darkness to bring a dead mercenary back for good.

You don't storm the Crypt so much as put on its uniform. Every fight inside is the facility's own machinery turned outward, and both bosses were built never to stay dead — so winning means seizing the Crypt's controls and out-pacing the machine that keeps reprinting your enemies.

01 · The Setting

The facility that printed the first Exo

Buried under Europa's ice sits the place where a human consciousness was first successfully copied into a machine body — and the Darkness that made it possible.

Buried under the ice of Europa lies the Deep Stone Crypt, the secret Clovis Bray facility where Exo mind-transfer was perfected — the place where a human consciousness was first successfully printed into a machine body. Its darkest secret is Clarity Control, a Darkness artifact Clovis found beneath the ice; the corrupted Vex radiolaria drawn from it became the key ingredient that let Exominds hold. Every Exo, the Crypt implies, carries a sliver of that Darkness. The facility was designed to be un-enterable, its controls deliberately split so no single intruder could ever hold full command.

By Beyond Light, the remnants of Eramis's House of Salvation have found it. They mean to use its resurrection tech and its Darkness for their own ends. The Exo Stranger — secretly Elsie Bray, Clovis's granddaughter and a time-traveler — assembles a fireteam to deny them the Crypt before its power is turned loose on the system.

Everything you fight inside is the facility's own machinery turned outward. The Operator, Scanner, and Suppressor augments are Clovis Bray's own access permissions, split three ways on purpose. Both bosses were engineered to refuse death — Atraks-1 prints fresh copies of herself, and Taniks grafted himself into Servitor-tech to self-repair. Winning means seizing the Crypt's controls and out-pacing the machine that keeps reprinting your enemies.

Why "Deep Stone Crypt"? It is a tomb dug deep into Europa's stone — but a crypt for something that keeps clawing back out. Clovis buried his defeat of death here, and the Fallen came digging for exactly that. Nothing in this vault agrees to stay dead.
02 · The Braytech bloodline

Clovis Bray, his granddaughter, and the deathless enemies

The Crypt is a family secret. The man who built it, the descendant who sends you in, and the pair of foes he taught how to cheat death.

Facility architect, dead

Clovis Bray I

The Braytech founder who built the Crypt to escape his family's degenerative disease by transferring minds into Exo bodies. His consciousness lingers as the facility's AI, coldly narrating your intrusion. His weapon logs reveal a man who spent Exo soldiers like ammunition in the name of progress.

BuriedThe voice greeting your break-in is Clovis himself — a mind he preserved in the Crypt he claims to have built by genius alone, boasting of the birthplace of the Exo even as you tear its defenses apart from the inside.
Time-traveler, your handler

Elsie Bray / The Exo Stranger

Clovis's granddaughter, an Exo who has looped through countless failed timelines trying to avert catastrophe. She discovers House Salvation has found the Crypt and assembles the fireteam to stop them.

BuriedThe mission caps with the Exo Stranger — present since Destiny 1's launch — finally revealing her name and her bloodline: she is Elsie Bray, tying your handler directly to the Crypt's Exo origins.
The deathless enemies

Atraks-1 & Taniks

Atraks, once Eramis's lieutenant, uploaded herself into an Eliksni Exoframe — the first Fallen Exo — gaining the power to duplicate. She used Clarity Control's Darkness to revive Taniks the Scarred as Taniks, Reborn, who then grafts himself onto reactor cores to become Taniks, the Abomination.

03 · The story, encounter by encounter

What each room is really doing to you

Read as narrative, the mechanics stop being arbitrary. Every panel, airlock, and nuclear core is one move in a descent to steal the Crypt's authority and kill two things that won't die.

Crypt Security

Hijacking the Doors

The Crypt was built to keep intruders out, so you don't defeat its defenses — you steal its permissions. Seizing Operator and Scanner authority, you work the light room, the dark room, and the basement panels exactly as the facility's staff once did, disarming the fusion grid the Crypt turns on trespassers. It is the first lesson: this place is beaten by wearing its own credentials.

Atraks-1, Fallen Exo

Out-Pacing the Print

Atraks-1 is Eramis's lieutenant fused into the Crypt's replication systems, resurrecting into fresh copies faster than you can kill them. Split between the orbital Morning Star and the Clarity Control lab, you cull her prints and vent each Atraks-1 Replication through an airlock with Operator authority. You never out-damage her — you out-pace the machine that keeps reprinting her.

The Rapture

Riding the Meltdown Down

Your intrusion has already tripped the Crypt's nuclear failsafe. You meet Taniks, Reborn on the command deck as the Morning Star tears loose and plummets toward Europa, and the Suppressor debuts to stun him under the Security Drones. Dispensing and banking nuclear cores while radiation climbs, you finish what the facility's own self-destruct started, then dive through the hatch to escape the crash.

Taniks, the Abomination

Killing What Won't Die

Taniks has grafted himself into Servitor-tech and the wreckage's reactor cores to become deathless, simply regenerating whatever you break. Stripping the cores off his thrusters and neutralizing them starves his self-repair while the Suppressor cracks his shield. In his final stand he abandons the mechanic and teleports the crash site in a panic — a few frantic seconds to burst down a thing that was engineered never to stay dead.

04 · Buried in the Crypt

The lore hidden in the loot

The reveals the campaign never says out loud live in item text, security logs, and the raid's stray details.

Eyes of Tomorrow
Exotic Rocket Launcher · Taniks drop
"I want to see it all, unhindered, and know it's mine to take. — Clovis Bray"

The raid-exclusive Solar rocket launcher, dropped from the Taniks chest. Its lore is a Clovis Bray security log: he drives an Exo soldier, Sergeant Traore, through a Vex portal to death, then coolly orders R&D to prototype a launcher that tracks and fires at everything at once.

Clarity Control
Location / item lore
"Within lies humanity's salvation."

The Darkness artifact Clovis found beneath Europa's ice. Its corrupted Vex radiolaria was the missing key that stabilized Exominds — meaning every Exo, including your allies, carries a fragment of Darkness.

The Crypt AI (Clovis Bray)
In-game narration
"This house was built by the genius Clovis Bray I himself."

Clovis's preserved consciousness greets your intrusion as the facility's voice, boasting of the birthplace of the Exo even as you tear its defenses apart from the inside.

Elsie Bray's reveal
Grimoire / cutscene
"The Stranger has a name at last — and a bloodline."

The mission caps with the Exo Stranger disclosing her identity as Elsie Bray, Clovis's granddaughter and a time-traveler, tying the Crypt's Exo origins directly to your handler.

05 · Where it sits in the saga

The saga's first hard look at the Darkness

Deep Stone Crypt sits early in the Light and Darkness Saga, the raid for the 2020 Beyond Light expansion. It follows the Europa campaign in which Eramis, Kell of Darkness, and her House of Salvation lieutenants (Phylaks, Praksis, Atraks, Kridis) are defeated — the raid is where the last lieutenant, Atraks, and her scheme to revive Taniks are finally undone.

Thematically it is the saga's first deep look at what the Darkness actually is and how it entwines with the Traveler's gifts: the Exos — machine Guardians and allies among your ranks — owe their existence to a Darkness artifact hidden under Europa. That quiet revelation seeds years of later story about the price of the Light-and-Dark bargain.

Narratively it is also the coming-out of the Exo Stranger, a character present since Destiny 1's launch. Confirming her as Elsie Bray and a time-traveler retroactively anchors her cryptic warnings and sets up her role across the rest of the saga through The Final Shape.

Keep reading: the hidden cosmology for what the Darkness in Clarity Control really is, the factions for the Eliksni, the Braytech line, and the Exo Stranger, and the timeline for where Beyond Light falls in the saga.
