A trap you win by springing it

Last Wish is the story of walking, on purpose, into a bargain you cannot fully win. You descend into the heart of the Dreaming City to kill a Taken wish-dragon — and her death is exactly what she wants, because slaying an Ahamkara grants a wish, and hers is a curse she has been building for centuries.

Every ward you break, every lock you speak open on the way down, brings you closer to a kill you already know is poisoned. The fireteam springs the trap knowingly, because Riven must die before her wish-magic warps reality — and the only way to end her is to give her the one thing she has been waiting for.

01 · The Setting

A city built with a captive dragon's wishes

Beneath the Awoken's hidden jewel in the Reef, at the very core of the Dreaming City, Queen Mara Sov kept the most dangerous secret in the system alive on a leash.

The Dreaming City is the Awoken's hidden jewel in the Reef — a city half-real, half-dream, laced with techno-sorcery and ward-machinery. At its heart, in the Keep of Voices, Queen Mara Sov kept her most closely guarded secret: Riven of a Thousand Voices, the last living Ahamkara. Ahamkara are wish-granting dragons; Mara used Riven's power to help shape the City itself, but never trusted her — she built the Wall of Wishes to make bargaining safer and walled Riven off at the City's core.

During the Taken War, Oryx Took Riven and her Techeun witches, folding them into his corruption. Even after Oryx fell, Riven stayed Taken — and later Savathûn whispered to her to 'take up those strings,' redirecting the curse toward the Awoken. With the Dreaming City's blight spreading, Petra Venj — acting for the sleeping Mara — calls Guardians in: Riven must die before her wish-magic warps reality.

The trap is the whole point. To kill an Ahamkara is to grant it a wish, and Riven's dying wish is the Curse of the Dreaming City — a three-week temporal loop that locks the City in a repeating decay. The fireteam breaks every ward on the way down knowing the ending is poisoned; the story of Last Wish is walking into a bargain you cannot fully win.

Why a "Wall of Wishes"? An Ahamkara grants what you ask — and twists it. Mara Sov built the ritual wall so bargains with Riven could be made at arm's length, never trusting the dragon to grant a wish cleanly. Last Wish is the moment that safety wall finally fails.
02 · The voices in the Keep

The dragon, the regent, and the witches turned to wards

One prisoner the Awoken never trusted, the woman who opens the gates to kill her, and the sorceresses the corruption turned into locks on the door.

The last Ahamkara

Riven of a Thousand Voices

A Taken wish-dragon and the Awoken's greatest kept secret, imprisoned in the Keep of Voices. She can wear any voice and grant any desire, which is exactly why she is deadly — her final wish weaponizes her own death. Her flavor line, 'I can be anyone you wish, o murderer mine,' names the whole bargain.

Queen's Wrath, quest-giver

Petra Venj

Mara Sov's right hand and regent of the Dreaming City, she commissions the raid: 'The last known Ahamkara. She has been Taken. And her death is your calling.' When the curse lands, she owns the cost — 'I opened the gates... I should have known.'

Taken Techeun witches

Kalli & Shuro Chi

Two of Mara Sov's Techeun sorceresses, Taken and turned into raid encounters as living wards guarding the descent. Freed of corruption, Shuro Chi gives the mission its bluntest instruction: Ahamkara feed on desire — kill it, rip out its heart.

BuriedThe two witch bosses aren't monsters the Vault happened to catch — they are Mara Sov's own Techeuns, sorceresses of the Awoken court, Taken during Oryx's war and left as sentinels on the road to the dragon. You are fighting the Queen's own guard, corrupted into the machinery meant to keep Riven caged.
03 · The story, encounter by encounter

What each room is really doing to you

Read as narrative, the mechanics stop being arbitrary. Every symbol-plate, blight, and lock is one ward of the Dreaming City turned against its own city on the descent to the dragon.

Kalli, the Corrupted

Undoing the Witch's Ritual

Kalli is a Taken Techeun cycling an endless purification ritual that keeps her invulnerable. Cleansing the plates whose symbols she corrupts is you undoing her rite faster than she can foul it, breaking the loop long enough to strike. It is the first ward of the Dreaming City turned against its own city.

Shuro Chi

Racing the Song of Ruin

Kalli's sister-witch chants the Song of Ruin — Awoken sorcery gone Taken that wipes the team when the verse completes. Climbing and solving her symbol-locks is a race to silence the spell before its last line. Freed, she tells you plainly to cut out the dragon's heart.

Morgeth, the Spirekeeper

Starving the Hoard

Morgeth is a Taken Ogre gorging on Taken Strength — the more he hoards, the closer the room comes to a wipe. Seizing the Strength orbs yourselves starves his over-charge, denying the corruption he feeds on before it boils over. He is Riven's lieutenant guarding the way to the Vault.

The Vault

Turning Shared Meaning into Motion

Bungie calls the Vault an Awoken security measure and describes extensive lock prototyping. Readers compare symbols to identify each dial's unique key; a matching Penumbra or Antumbra cleanse turns that key through the upper socket, while defenders protect the reading plates from Knights. Story reading: the fireteam turns ambiguous images into precise shared action. The Wall of Wishes separately establishes the Techeuns' use of a visual language to constrain Riven's interpretation; that parallel does not prove who built this exact lock or give its animal symbols a fixed dictionary.

Riven of a Thousand Voices

Springing the Last Wish

The last Ahamkara fights through her wish-conduits — the eyes and crystal mouth you shoot across two mirrored rooms. Killing her grants a wish, and hers is the curse itself, so her death fires the trap on purpose. Tearing out her heart is you seizing what the wish leaves behind, to carry it out of the City.

Queenswalk

Carrying the Heart Home

The wish already fired the instant Riven died — the curse is loose. Queenswalk is the desperate relay to bank her heart, passing it hand to hand as a stacking darkness burns whoever holds it too long. You get the heart back to the Awoken before the Taken can stop you, whatever it ends up serving.

04 · Buried in the wish

The lore hidden in the loot

The reveals the campaign never says out loud live in exotic flavor text, item entries, and the raid's stray lines of dialogue.

One Thousand Voices
Exotic weapon flavor
"I can be anyone you wish, o murderer mine."

The raid exotic's lore is spoken in Riven's own voice, framing language as a virus that infects minds and lays desire 'bare in the chest, so juicy and succulent for the taking.' The gun is her thesis: manipulation through the right word in the right voice.

Petra's calling
Raid introduction
"The last known Ahamkara. She has been Taken. And her death is your calling."

Petra Venj's opening lines name the target and the stakes before you drop, standing in for the sleeping Mara Sov who kept Riven secret for generations.

Riven's confession
Grimoire / item text
"Before me stands a King. He offers to take me away. I tell him to take whatever he wishes."

Riven's recollection of being Taken by Oryx after the Battle of Saturn — even her surrender is phrased as a granted wish, the pattern that dooms the City when she dies.

The last wish
Encounter dialogue
"Ah, I've waited so long to fulfill one last wish..."

Riven's dying line reveals the raid was her plan all along; the wish she grants is the three-week Curse of the Dreaming City, later tied to Savathûn and the Taken Vex Mind Quria.

05 · Where it sits in the saga

The raid that opened the Dreaming City

Last Wish sits firmly in the Light & Darkness Saga, launching with Forsaken (September 2018) as the raid that closes out Forsaken's opening act and opens the Dreaming City as an endgame destination. It is the first raid to feature an Ahamkara boss and the first set in the Reef.

Its consequences propagate for years of the saga: Riven's dying wish seeds the Curse of the Dreaming City, a three-week temporal loop later revealed as Savathûn's long game (via the Taken Vex Mind Quria), which pays off across Shadowkeep, the Season of the Lost, and The Witch Queen. The raid is a hinge between the Taken War's aftermath and the Hive-god scheming that dominates the mid-saga.

Mechanically and narratively it predates the Light-and-Dark climax of The Final Shape and has nothing to do with the newer Fate Saga (Edge of Fate / Renegades). It remains the one pre-Garden raid Bungie never vaulted, so it is still launchable in the Monument-of-Triumph sandbox as a playable piece of saga history.
